Oak Bay Golf Course
About
Carved from the scenic woodlands along the eastern shores of Georgian Bay, Oak Bay Golf & Country Club incorporates rocky outcroppings and natural water features into its challenging championship design. The eastern coast of the bay is one of the largest freshwater archipelagos in the world and is home to diverse flora and hundreds of varieties of birds and fish. Both the fairways and greens are sloped and well manicured. In addition to the many natural challenges, which include trees and ponds, there are numerous strategically placed traps to watch out for. Oak Bay is located less than two hours north of Toronto but its beautiful setting makes it feel much further.

Good but could have been GREAT
I had never played here before and booked online, the day before, as a single, joining two others already booked. On arrival for my 9:30am tee time, the starter advised that he didn't know who I was playing with because he hadn't "looked at the tee sheet yet". He told me to check in the pro shop. When I arrived in the pro shop it was empty for 2 or 3 minutes. I went to the snack bar (just outside the pro shop) to get a coffee while I waited but nobody was there either. When someone returned to the pro shop desk I checked-in and found out the other 2 people that were booked had cancelled, so I would be alone.
Since I would be alone and never played before I asked the starter if the back tees (just under 6400 yards, slope 137) would be ok for my 14 handicap. He said "sure" and then just gave me cart driving instructions (no advice).
I found out on the course that the back tees require a carry of 180 yards on 6 or 7 fairways, over tall marsh, to reach a blind fairways. I drive the ball 225-230 with a 190 carry so this was very difficult for me (especially not knowing if the ball cleared the marsh until I drovecto the other side of it. Anyway, sone advice from the starter would have been appropriate a d much appreciated. I would not have played the back tees.
When finishing the round, the same starter gave me grief because I parked the cart, maybe 10 yards past a temporary sign for cart return. Really?!
I went to get a bottle of water for the drive home but nobody was in the snack bar.
Review
Course is well kept.
Staff is very friendly
GPS is handy in carts
Houses are intimidating
Not much rough to work with before the ball is lost
Great course, great people, COLD BEER!
Played 18 yesterday. Course was great condition. The greens were fast, learned that the hard way hahaha. BEER was nice and cold, and the restaurant was great afterwards. Had a great day! Definitely would recommend 👌
Godf experience that could have been much better
I am a 13.5 handicap and this was a tough course for me from the back (blue) tees. It was my first time here and the 2 golfers I was to be partnered with didn't show. So, I didn't have any possible local knowledge to help either. If you're playing the blues, you need to have a 200 carry on your drives for about 8 holes (over deep and sometimes tall) marsh areas to the landing areas.
The starter was a problem. When I arrived for my 9:40am tee time. he said he didn't know who I was playing with since he "hadn't looked at the tee sheet yet". I discussed my abilities and with the starter and I wished he would have recommended not playing the back tees, alone, on my first time there. The starter also gave me grief when I returned my power cart to the area I got it from (which was 10 yards past the area he wanted them to be returned. Really?
There was no one in the snack shop both times I went there (before and after my round).
Golfer's Etiquette
Everything about this course is great across the board. What isn't great is how the golfers treat the course Replace your divots, spiked cleats - pick up your feet when on the green. The club can only do so much to fix the grounds. When ignorant golfers don't do the right thing, it affects others play
Expected better conditions
Nice views, target golf. Seems like fairways and greens have a lot of foot traffic. Not a lot of people fixing their divots and pitch marks. Don’t know that I would play again for the price, considering the conditions.
Great staff and service
After playing this course at least 250 times.
i still love coming out here.It has never been in better shape and still is a challenge every time.
Just a couple of things to note. Firstly, it rained a fair bit the day before so some areas on the course were soft. Secondly, where are the ball washers? None at the tee blocks and none on the cart.
We all love The course, it is very nice but very challenging with long hazard areas from tee box, you need to drive far in order to get to fairway. Tee boxes are in very good conditions, beautiful turf, but rough in most areas is pretty thick. Staffs are supportive, they are doing thier jobs very responsibly and caring , but it would be nicer if there were like less strictness, more flexiblity.:). We will definitely come back again. Thanks
I would play here any time
Thanks to everyone
Cheers
Tuff Course
Bring your “a” game. Difficult course of you can’t hit straight off the tee. Great condition and place of play was excellent…just a very difficult course. Some unique holes.
Well kept. Tough but true.
Oak Bay is a premier golf course. The staff were great and were able to start off the back 9 earlier than expected which was really appreciated as it enabled to be the heat. Two bottles of ice cold water to top it off. The greens are tough but roll true. Beware poison ivy....bring a few extra balls.
Challenging course
Beautiful golf course. Extremely challenging so expect to lose more balls than average. Furthermore, the brush on the each side of the super narrow rough is concentrated with poison ivy so even when your ball goes in by a few inches it’s not worth the risk to try and find it, and even if you do find it there’s a super slim chance it is playable.
