Truly, a hidden gem
As one who loves golfing in the Niagara region (can we say OPTIONS?), one thing i've come to learn is that you must try random courses to find the really great ones. Lochness (the artist formerly known) or Hunters Pointe as we called it this year, is one of those hidden gems. Somewhat links style, with extremely challenging greens, unique approach shots, and a heavy reliance on water hazards makes for one enjoyable round.
The staff marshall was great at keeping the pace of play up, and the fellow golfers were courteous to faster players as well.
I am not biased, even though I shot my best back 9 of my life, but I truly had an enjoyable time at this course, and the quality to price, is unbeatable. I will most certainly recommend this course to friends, and even bring some of my out of town visitors here to experience a truly challenging 'romp' outside.
Cheers
M
Hunters Pointe is always in great shape and good value for the money.
The fairways were well maintained with most recent divots being filled. The greens were also in great shape with the putts running true and at a reasonable speed giving you the opportunity to score well.
Considering the course was very busy and we never once saw a marshal the speed of play was very acceptable. We managed to play 2 rounds (yes 36 holes) in less than 9 hours. The replay rate was $25 each including power cart.
If there was a downside I would say it was the price of food from the cart girl. A simple tuna sandwich on a "hamburger bun" cost $5.00 which I thought was over priced.
A great course for the value and challenge
Always plays tough even on non windy days. Greens are large but tricky with subtle breaks. Uphill to some greens makes club selection a thoughtful process. Well worth playing either regularly or a few times a season.
always windy
The bunkers are in need of more sand as they were hard and claylike. Greens are very fast and rest of course is in great condition.
Links golf at Hunters Pointe
There is a lot to like about this course and only one negative that stopped me from giving a perfect score.
The staff was very nice and starter gave a good introduction to the course, being our first time playing, explaining current course conditions and pin positions.
We found the course to be a nice challenge with rock hard fairways and greens that would roll the ball forever. This level of quality on a links course was expected and enjoyed by everyone in the group.
However, there was serious issues with a number of the bunkers around the course. Many of them were rock hard with barely any sand, like hitting off concrete. While others had puddles of water sitting in them, obviously unplayable. On another course i could have let this issue pass, but here with so many bunkers, i thought they would have been up to the standards of the rest of the course.
The pace of play was adequate for a full golf course. Yes we had to wait for 2-3 minutes at every tee-off for the group ahead of us, but it gave us time to plan our strategy for each hole and didn't diminish the experience.
This course is very enjoyable to play and picturesque holes 9 and 18 are definitely an amazing sight to see and play, over and over.
Would play again.
Nice patio overlooking 18th Green and fairway.
Well designed course with fast & true greens. Long and challenging par 3's. Each hole is a new adventure.
Beautiful links layout.
Greens are begging for TLC. Players are not fixing pitch marks.
Some issues due to recent rain
Went to this course with a friend and were put into a foursome. The group ahead was very slow, no marshal was to be found to tell them to move (though a marshal somehow appeared when I drove over a little hill to tell me this was not allowed at the course). Ended up skipping hole 7 as it took over 2 hours to play the first 6 holes and found the group ahead of them was already on #10. The greens had ALOT of divots in them, were definitely not as smooth as they were last year, the bunkers also hadn't been raked at all on this day. Hunters is one of my favorite courses and it was disappointing to see it in this condition as last year it was in perfect shape.
Overall, a very nice course to play.
Enjoyed the round. Played the morning after some heavy rain. Course was pretty wet in most fairways. Cart path only slowed things down. Still managed to finish in 4hrs, 10 minutes. Big ponds in all the bunkers. Had to rake the puddles to find your ball. Still lost a few in the bunkers! By mid-day, things were starting to dry out.
A must play
This course will NEVER disappoint you! I've played this golf course many times and it always delivers in quality and value. Fairways are maintained to perfection, greens hold and roll true...and the rough is playable in most areas, yet punishing in others. If you haven't played here before do yourself a favour and book a tee time asap!!!
General conditioning good...bunkers terrible
The overall conditioning of the course is good, greens are quick and true. But the bunkers are some of the worst in Niagara, the use beach sand which normally isn't too bad but there was no attempt to sift out the rocks which range from small gravel to over an inch in size, plus if you try to get under the ball you will soon find hard clay.
Great course
Fast greens- great fairways.
The staff was very pleasant and helpful.
greens need some work
9 and18 are great risk reward holes and there seems to be a lot of roll going into the par 5s
An excellent course in great condition. It's fairways are quite wide and forgiving for tee shots and the greens are very challenging.
This was the first time that I played this course and I will definitely be back soon. I will recommend it to all of my friends.
This course is an excellent links golf experience.
The course was in great shape, well maintained from tee boxes to the greens. It was fantastic and would go back tomorrow if I could.
staff was great.
Would surely be coming back. On staff alone. Thanks for the great time.....matt
Great Course...But Poor Management
I have been a fan of Hunter's Pointe since it opened. However, this all changed after my last round. It started with a marshall at the first tee giving me a lecture about "slow play and that if I could not keep up, they would ask me to let faster players through." I was the only one given this lecture in three groups - I was the only female player. I take offense to this, as I waited while group after group of male golfers were allowed to tee off, and I was only allowed to go after them. This was the start of a horrible experience.
The first 3 holes took 1 hr and 20 mins to play - NO MARSHALL TO BE FOUND ANYWHERE. On the third hole, with four groups waiting, we decided to skip the 4th hole and go directly to the 5th. We played holes, 5,6,7,8,9,10 & 11 in last than 30 mins - no one to be seen. At that point we caught up to the group ahead of us, and it took 2 hrs to play the next 7 holes.
Low and behold, on the 17th hole, the marshall (Mike) drives up to us, and starts yelling at us because we broke away from our group (of note...the group we were with we just finishing hole 9 after 3hrs...so they were going to take 6hrs to play the round). The marshall found nothing wrong with that, rather he proceeded to yell at the top of his lungs that I am not to skip a hole, I am to stay with my group, all the while pointing his finger in my face. I asked him where he had been all day? No answer. He was in the clubhouse, talking as we witnessed when we finished 9 and were on our way to 10. He told me not to expect to come to this course and finish in less than 4 hrs and 45mins (when did the average time to play 18 increase that dramatically!!!). For reference, I played the course the previous week in less than 4hrs with a foursome and a full course. When I asked to speak to the manager at the end of the round, there was not manager to be found, just a young kid claiming to be the manager and refusing to give me the name of the manager. The manager, said that everyone has a right to play golf no matter how long the round takes.
I will not return to this course for three reasons:
(1) discriminatory remarks made by the starter to the female player in our group about slow play (these comments were not made to any other member of our group or the groups behind us - all male)
(2) being publically yelled at by the marshall for skipping a hole. Ultimately, if the marshall was doing his job, we should not have had to skip a hole.
(3) a round that would have taken 6hrs if we had not skipped a hole and the marshall thinking that nothing was wrong with a 6 hour round.
Good value
Nice track, some very challenging holes, long par threes, and some long 4's, 9 and 18 are two neat par 5's lots of water to deal with. Greens were fast and undulating, a real challenge. Only issue we had was while playing the 15th hole, out of no where, a twosome cut in front of us our group, and offered no explanation of where they came from or why they did what they did. Rude rude people. They were not even a group following us all day that . Other than that, good place to test all facets of your game.
Great course but requires some maintenance
I love this course even though I'm not a long hitter. That being said, I was a little disappointed with the condition of the course. The greens were just full of unfixed ball marks and the fairways were chewed up with divots. I realize that this is not the courses fault but maybe they need to post signs all around the greens to remind people to fix their ball marks. They also need to add the seed mix bottles back onto the carts. This particular day was very slow as there were a few groups of walkers ahead of us and this course is not a good walking course as there are some long walks between holes at times. We also played on July 1st and were done in 3 1/2 hours on that day.
Good course, fast tough greens
Played HP the day after a huge T-storm that dumped inches of rain up until midnight. Tee'd off at 2pm and it was pretty wet, but by the time we finished after 6, the course was pretty dry and in great shape. Despite the rain, the greens were the fastest and truest I've played all year. There are some really tough greens on this course with huge undulations. My brother left himself with about five impossible 2 putt situations and that enabled me to win. Of any course in Niagara placement on the greens matters most on this course.
