Lakes at Firewheel Golf Park
About
The Lakes Course at Firewheel is a links-style course that is loaded with water, and was a Dick Phelps creation on his return to Garland in 1987. Hole 7 is the most difficult–a long 549-yard par 5 that requires an approach over a pond.
Getting there : From Dallas, take Hwy. 75 north and exit Arapaho. Turn right and when you come to N. Garland Ave., turn left. Drive to W. Blackburn Rd. and turn west. The course is just down the road.

Always loved this place
Waiting for the Old Course to reopen and I will ALWAYS miss it as I grew up on it but it will be amazing no doubt. Just played the lakes Monday and it was in fantastic shape even after rain the day before.
Pace
My only real complaint was the 4 hour 45 minute round but the fairways were nice as well as the greens. Really narrow setup so be prepared to hit it straight!
Great course
The lakes course is in good shape right now it’s a challenging course but fun to play. Firewheel is my go to course the only downside to firewheel is no matter what you can never get a early tee time on the weekend. Something going on where they block the early tee times for there buddy’s but I try every week and can never get a early tee times. Other that that I’ll keep playing there.
First and last.
Very poor yardage instruction for first timer and very poor instructions to get from hole to hole. Greens good shape if you can get there without pulling your hair out or drinking all your beer on first few holes. Good luck.
Nice Course
Other than pushing my group because they were worried about the foursome behind us, due to them playing in the course tournament the next day, it was a good round. Being relatively new to playing Texas courses, is it common for a single golfer to pe put with other golfers to make a foursome?
Green in July!
Despite the Old Course looking like it’s been closed forever, the Lakes course was in excellent shape and played well in the middle of a TX summer…greens were slow but with most being elevated that’s a plus to me. The staff was excellent and overall I was impressed with the condition of the course. Firewheel is a great place to play and I was pleased with the overall experience…all the rain we have had for the past month proved this course can handle the water!
Lakes Course
I really liked the layout. Very challenging course. Fairways are cut a bit too short. Course seems to retain water from previous rains a bit too much. As it seems there has been a previous course update, I would have liked to see the price in the $20s per person, but it was cheaper than all the surrounding courses as $$ have increased this season drastically everywhere.
Great course for the price
Do not listen to nixevo’s review. For the price, the course is nice. Someone the best greens that I have played on in the dallas area.
First time.. likely last
I honestly don’t do reviews unless my experience exceptional or the other side of the spectrum. I’ll start by saying that for $40-$50 a round it’s borderline a decent value… frankly I’d rather pay $100 though to play somewhere if this is what I’m to expect for this price point. And for comparative purposes, I just finished playing Webb Hill CC at this price point and WOW! Beautiful. Scenic, great fairways, fast greens, I mean wow. It’s a haul but worth it. Alas this is about Lakes course at fire wheel which underwhelmed in every way. I’ve played Bridges and Old course (crap) and Bridges was fine. Currently, this is a goat ranch: fairways are terrible, tee boxes need a hammer to get your tee in, Losing balls You n the middle of the fairway because there’s just crap all over. And even then I’d be willing to look past some of that but the cherry was a golf cart I got covered in some kind oil or armor all… I don’t know but it got on everything I own. It was all over the steering wheel, seats, in bag carrier area, flooring and you couldn’t see out the window. I ruined my round as it got all over my grips and gloves, ruined $120 pair of golf shorts and had to detail my Vessel bag. I would’ve brought it to management’s attention but I figured they cared about as much as they did giving a customer a golf cart in that condition. I’ve gone on long enough… DONT PLAY HERE. Find a better track. Pay the extra money. Make the longer drive. Do yourself the favor. End rant.
Great Sunday
Course is in amazing condition right now. Greens are running fast and makes for a challenging day for sure.
Review
Course was great. My only complaint is that there was no hole on the first Tee, & nobody in the pro shop made anybody aware of it prior to our round.
There was just a flag sticking up at the hard turn of the dog leg, to which we thought was an aim point. After hitting our approach shot onto the green (that had no flag) we walked up to see there was also no cup! I ended up giving myself a par so I can’t be too mad, but definitely caused for some confusion to start my round.
Highly recommend going!
Great condition
Fairways were in great condition. Haven’t seen them this way in a long time. Going back!
Fun Tight Layout
This is a fun course if you're ready to play target golf for a day. It is a fun break from the monotony that some other courses can become. I wouldn't only play here but I will definitely keep it in the rotation as a break from the norm. The first green was still out of play so there is a temporary green making the first hole a great warm up hole at this point. The starter stated that the first green should be in play soon so that is a welcome change. Pace of play was under 4 hours and we started at 8:05 Sunday morning. The pro shop employees were also very nice in my brief interactions. Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing how the Old Course renovation turns out as well.
