Old at Firewheel Golf Park
About
Firewheel is Texas’ most impressive example of municipal golf. Owned and operated by the city of Garland, and extremely popular because of the fair price and number of available golf holes, Firewheel now sports 63 holes since the new Bridges course opened in the past few years. All three tracks can be challenging because they each incorporate a variety of hazards into their designs, including limestone that is scattered throughout the property.
The Old Course, the traditional layout, was rated No. 1 by the Dallas Morning News. Water hazards come into play throughout the design, such as on hole #18, a 400-yard, par 4, requiring a tee shot and an approach shot over the same creek, which winds through the hole. Hole 9 is the feature hole, a 552-yard par 5 that rolls downhill. The tee shot is into a narrow landing area carved out of trees, and on the approach you must be in perfect position because of the strategically placed pecan trees. Number 18 is challenging with both the tee shot and the approach over a creek that winds through the hole.

Value for money
Its good course for the money, fairways and greens in very god condition.
it is worth playing this course for the value
A fun course with lots of challenges (but not too many)!
Friendly staff and a fun course. We had a couple of slow groups ahead, but, no big deal.
We'd play again and probably will!
Fair Prices for Sub-Par Course
Staff said about four words to me while reserving and paying for my tee time. Many drainage issues on fairways, approaches, and all around the cart paths. Groundskeepers that continue their work despite golfers. Tee boxes so hard I broke four tees just pushing them in. Currently at the turn writing this and the back 9 looks more promising, but time will tell.
Get out your Driver
Links type feel with the open fairways, only thing missing was the fescue grass roughs and rolling greens. First time playing Old Course and Driver was workable on every par 4 and 5. One tight fairway on 9.
Fairway bunkers were well placed and had actual sand, not lump clay. Cannot wait for rakes to come back into existence, but was able to get clean outs from them anyhow.
Hybrids are a definite for 2nd shots - overshot two greens by playing a 19 degree when I should have hit the 22 degree. Par 5s are reachable in 2 for long hitters, and 4s are there for you to take advantage of.
Loved the dogleg left 18, calls for strategy whether to hook one down the dogleg or play it safe with a layup.
Par 3s invited a good landing, allowing for left to right play.
Good place of play, greens a but dry, but we are in Texas.
Great Course, Rolling Fairways
Loved the course. Open fairways allowed for use of Driver on most of the holes. Linkish play, without the high fairway rough. If you like swinging big and going long, the old course is for you.
Water really not a factor, you have to really hook or slice to get wet. #18 is a good sharp left dog leg to finish, and #9 has a challenging valley shot with bunker protected green that calls for good short iron play.
Hybrids came into to play on most 2nd shots, with 4s reachable due to generous pathways to greens. Flew two greens with a 19 hybrid, should have toned down to 22 degree.
Fairway bunkers were placed well and the sand was fine, as is, not lumpy clay.
5s were a challenge - open fairways allowed you to go for the green in two and smooth, clean fairways allowed for beneficial rolls and easy pars.
Greens were good, no blight, and they ran smooth. Can't wait till we get rakes back in the traps.
Unfortunate and lackluster
It’s unfortunate how mediocre the Old course is, considering how much I like the Lakes course at Firewheel. Pace of play was absolutely horrendous, backed up from the first tee and would have to 2-3 groups waiting at every single tee box. The course is an easy open layout. Tee boxes and greens were mostly hard as concrete, the greens were inconsistent and some of them were fluffy and in need of a cut. The sprinklers were going on the 13th green which was pretty inconvenient mid round. Driving range was like hitting out of the sand, no grass whatsoever. Course is good for those wanting an easy layout. Staff is always friendly here though.
Old Course
The Old Course at Firewheel needs some work. From dead spots on greens to tee boxes in disrepair. With that being said there was a large amount of greens and grounds crew on the course making repairs. I would play here again, but may wait a bit before going back.
My cart quit working on the 14 tees..call the office no one answer ...left it out of coarse....
Excellent play
Great experience I would like to come into staff excellent professional and always willing to help. everybody was very helpful the play was great to course excellent condition I would recommend it to all my friends
Old Course
Greens and Fairway gave me the impression of a city municipal course. Greens and fairways were not well manicured. Grass was tall in many areas. Disappointing.
Nice course to sharpen your game
I played the Old Course. We had a lot of rain the night before so the course was pretty wet but I was surprised it was not worse
I enjoyed my game. As a 2 ball we played in 3 hours. The course has a nice layout and uses the water well to protect some of the greens. The fairways are mainly open and a good tee shot is rewarded Some of the greens needed work (weeds and bare patches) but overall not bad
I will certainly be back to play this and the other course here
Great course!
Open yet challenging fairways, a good challenge, great greens.
