Iron Horse Golf Course
About
Iron Horse Golf Course is laid out in the floodplain of Fossil Creek, an area loaded with woods and a railroad that divides the property into three tracts. When Dick Phelps designed the golf course he loaded it with par 4s that are over 400 yards. This track has only two par 5s, but you'll get your money's worth as they are virtually impossible to reach in two. Iron Horse's best hole is the 462-yard, par-4 third hole, which is generally a bogey hole for the average golfer.

Lots of ground under repair on every fairway. This was one of the better ones. Photo submitted by Ken9948006 on 03/27/2023

One of my favorites
This is a local course for me, but it is also a very well maintained course. I enjoy being able to go down the road and play a nice course without breaking the bank to play. Being a 20 hdcp, this course is plenty challenging for me. Highly recommended.
Good course for the price.
Iron horse is a true test of accuracy, not a freindly course for the first time visitor at any level or a begginer even if they live there. Fairways are in great condition, but keep an eye on your approach shot. The third cut around the greens can teleport your ball in the Bermuda Triangle.
Hit'em straight or prepare to swim
Enjoyable experience with a fast pace of play. We would have been faster if I could have controlled my straightness better.
Two things would have made this better:
1. Improve signage. If I hadn't been playing with people who are experienced on this course, I would have gotten lost twice.
2. Include range balls with greens fees. At $70 for a Saturday round, shelling $9 for a small bucket was irritating. Just charge $80 and be on par with other upper-medium tier golf courses.
Not a good experience on the course
The course needs a lot of attention. Many fairways are in horrible shape, and the greens have patches that need some attention. The pace of play was horrible. I actually had to call the clubhouse because there was a 5-some ahead of us playing very slow. It turned out, it was not just any group, it was actually the GM of the course and the golf-pro. One would think they would have the common sense to either allow people to play through or speed up the pace of play. I will not be playing Iron Horse again.
Very challenging, but lots of fun
Always find a good deal for this course on Golf Now. Fun course to play and always have a friendly staff on hand. I play by myself most of the time. Each time I've been put with a group of two or three and have always had a great time with who ever I play with
Overall
I'll play this course regularly , it's in great condition, the Marshall kept the pace good . The course is a great course I recommend it very high. Greens in great shape .....Loved the ice water on certain holes .......Thanks we had fun.....Sid
Iron Horse is a fun course. A good value. Recommend playing from the Green or Black (back ) tees
Holes 2 and 3 are very challenging and the last stretch of holes 15, 16 and 17 are too. Play from the back tees or the green tees and you will be tested and use all the clubs in your bag.
Course is in good shape, practice area is marginal, staff is excellent and all in all this is a course I would recommend....particularly if you can find it for $35 or less
love the touch screen gps.
Favorite local course with friendly staff. Course is well maintained and the mashalls are doing there job of keeping the pace. Always gotta love their gps dead accurate and will help you alot.
Course has matured into an excellent track
We played on a Thursday afternoon. The maintenance staff has done a great job maintaining & making improvements to the course over the years. The greens were as good as they have ever been during the Spring. Even with the Summer heat & the golf traffic on the course, Iron Horse is in very good shape. The quality, I enjoy about Iron Horse, is if you play with good course management, you will use almost every club in your bag. You must save the "grip it & rip it" for a scramble. I like the addition of the collection area to the left of #8 green. In the past, balls that landed on the left edge of that green would find the water. The entire Iron Horse staff is great & they do a super job.
Decent course, good value
Enjoyable round, good value. Iron Horse has a lot of character.
Great course for the money
Played with a foursome in the middle of the afternoon. Played at a normal pace on the front but flew through the back 9 in less than 2 hours. Really fun holes in the middle of the round. I will definitely be back, especially for the price.
Grreat course, great price
Summer is here and fairways are firming up. Long drives.
Greens were still recovering from aeration but overall were pretty good. Give it a week or so and they'll be very good.
Good course in good condition and the facilites are very nice.
Pace of play was 4 hours, but could have been better. We met a group of 2 players on the back who were holding up 5 groups behind them.
But pace of play is an issue everywhere nowdays...
Great Pace / Great Condition
Don't let the yardage fool you. There are short holes, but long bombers may need to club down. It was a great pace of play in just under 4 hours. The course was in excellent condition. The staff is friendly and eager to assist. If you have the time, make it out to play, you won't be disappointed.
$27 it can't be beat
First time I have played this course. It was very help to have their gps system. Staff was very friendly. Green were easier than other courses however layout gave challenges.
This course is very strategic. Plays shorter than advertised and the greens were true to form and consistent.
visiting DFW area and 1st time ever on course. I would play again when back in area. Nice course. Good shape. Hats off to staff very accommodating and friendly.
Good all-around topped off with excellent service
Course is in very good shape. Multiple tee boxes make what can be a very tough course playable for all levels. Outstanding staff all over the course (pro shop, marshalls and beverage carts)
Don't fooled by the yardage......
Don't be fooled by the seemingly short yardage of this course. There are only two par 5's and two of the par 3's are 200+ yards.
The course was in good shape on 6/20/2013 when I played. I played from the tips that are about 6,700 yards. Although the course was well maintained the fairways were a little high and spongy resulting in drives that did not roll out, which made the course also play longer. The greens have a more course blade bermuda grass and they too were a little long and spongy. The grass on the greens was full, they could have cut them lower for sure. The fairways on most holes are tree lined which also puts a premium on the tee balls. Bunkers on the course were raked and acceptable. There were not many players on the course the day I played and our group was waived through on a couple of occasions....we played in just over 3 hours. Nice...
Great place, poor management
Love the course, but am always disappointed by the lack of attention paid to the pace of play., especially on the back nine where the course seems to always back up. My group played the front nine in right at two hours. At the turn we ran into a group of of beginning folders with no and etiquette and and no supervision. The back nine took just over three hours, and when I requested a players assistant on number twelve I never got a response. I then called the pro shop because the group in front of us was not only slow but were very dangerous. On two separate occasions they almost hit people in other groups and never called fore. Again no response from the pro shop. Very disappointed that a golf facility of that nature can't afford to have players assitants on the course.
Course is in amazing condition!
Iron Horse has always been a well maintained course and this round certainly lived up to its reputation. The course conditions are immaculate and the greens are perfect. Every putt rolls true. Plus, you won't find a nicer and more friendly staff or better looking cart girls for that matter. Play this course... you will be very happy you did.
