The Nicklaus Design Course at Vidanta Puerto Penasco

About
Jack Nicklaus and his son teamed up to design the course at The Nicklaus Design Course at Vidanta Puerto Penasco (formerly known as Peninsula De Cortes Golf Club and Peninsula Golf Club at Vidanta Puerto Penasco). Half of the layout plays along the Sea of Cortes while the other half wanders inland through native wetlands and desert vegetation. Long hitters will enjoy this golf course, which stretches to more than 7,000 yards. The Nicklaus team designed a challenging layout but the rugged terrain also deserves credit. They utilized not only the natural hazards but also the stunning views, which are as varied as the challenges. Every hole is framed by a backdrop of the desert, mountains, or sea. The signature hole is the par-3 sixth. On this tough hole you'll be met with a series of waterways that sits between the tees and the green complex, where four bunkers are also lurking.

This course is a great track
The golf course was well maintained, tremendous views. The staff was very attentive .
Great course, great value
I’ve played Islas Del Mar (only had nine holes open at the time and I think that’s still the case) and las Palomas, and Vidanta was the best of the three here in puerto peñasco. The tee boxes, fairways, greens, and bunkers were all very well kept, and the are incredible views of the ocean on several holes.
Free range balls and a great range/chipping/putting setup were a nice surprise.
I also had to rent clubs this time around and was impressed by the nearly-new set of titleist woods/irons(t350)/wedges and Scotty Cameron putter.
Highly recommend this course!
Beautiful course!
Gorgeous course with lots of challenges! Staff was fabulously helpful and friendly! Highly recommend!
Magnificent
Beautiful condition it was over 100 degrees,so no players pushing you
This course has awesome views
The course is in great shape. Fairways are absolutely awesome and greens are super. Loved the layout. Will definitely play this course again.
Top 5 courses I’ve played
Couldn’t have been in a more perfect condition, views were impeccable!
Must Play- Incredible Ocean Layout
This course has a really nice layout.. multiple tears allow for players of any skill level to enjoy the course. The lady sees were a bit long for shorter hitters. Course was an excellent condition from tee to green.
If you come to Puerto Penasco and don't play this course, you have missed out.
Outstanding course, a lot of fun and scenic
I played in the early afternoon, August 12th, and while it was hot, the wind blew steadily off the Sea of Cortes making the round very enjoyable. I played the front nine twice because the back nine was closed for aeration. But since I hadn't played this course before, the second time around felt like I knew the layout. It's in very good condition, although the greens had been punched and sanded just a week ago. Still, they putted satisfactorily, no complaints. The driving range includes a chipping area and practice putting green as well as full-length range, no extra charge. A friendly guy drove the refreshment cart with ice and beverages and when I finished, I played in about three-and-a-half hours, another attendant was there with a cold scented towel -- it doesn't get any better. I couldn't decide which was my favorite between two "signature" holes, number 4, the beachside par three with elevated green, or number 3, the par four requiring an approach between two small hills in front of the green with the sea in the immediate background, see photograph. With a steady 15- to 20-mile an hour wind off the sea, the seventh, eighth and ninth holes are very challenging. Driving to the course from Puerto Penasco takes about a half hour. The roads aren't bad -- GPS and road signs are accurate. The only minor inconvenience came when I found that I had to backtrack a mile or so from the golf course to the lobby of the Mayan Palace hotel, the location of the pro shop, to obtain proof of payment.
Spectacular course, and had a fantastic time playing
Well, this was a true treat. This course was very tough, but fair. The fairways were like a carpet...perfect and wonderful. Bunkers were like a PGA event. It was so hot and muggy, but the beauty of the course made that tolerable. I was disappointed that there was no brochure or course map, or clear directions. There was a convenience fee and almost $19.00 in tax, so the cost increased quite a bit. We got really worked over on the cart beverage cost, really overcharged but since we were pretty much the only ones playing, we blew it off. The experience was completely worth it and we will most certainly pay there again.
Always Fun
I play once or twice a year at Vidante. Always a fun round, great staff and layout.
Bad juju / no customer appreciation
Our tee time was for 1:10 pm made on GolfNow.com
We checked in and asked about resident rates. They are more than golf now. I asked if they would match golf now rates and the woman basically laughed at me saying “oh no”!
Went to the course early with the intention of warming up on the driving range. Only about 20 balls on the range (there were two of us). I picked some more balls up myself on the driving range. The place was deserted so I was in no danger.
I went to ask if we could tee off early since the last group to tee off was well an hour ahead of us. I was told no because I paid a cheap rate and if I wanted to tee off early I would have to pay a different price. At this point the only other people around are maintenance workers. The course is empty and there are no golfers to be seen.
We waited…..finally teed off at 1:10!
They gave us the worst golf cart they had (maybe not on purpose ).
I believe they made us wait to prove their point about the price ($5 cheaper than their resident rate for a Wednesday).
They proved their point but lost a great customer. We play about 3 times a week and that WAS my favorite course because of the waterfront location.
We drove half an hour to go play there from our new house in Puerto Penasco. Now I guess we’ll play closer to home.
So much for customer service…..
Vidanta or any of their affiliates will ever see my money again!
Plan ahead
Be sure to check in at the hotel first where the golf shop is. The actual corse is a couple of miles down the road. Course in good shape but a lot of maintenance work is going on and the temporary dirt road in is terrible
