Forest Creek Golf Club
About
Designed by Dick Phelps, Forest Creek Golf Club has been named "Best Public Golf Course in Central Texas" by Golf Digest as well as "Golf Club of the Year" by Club Corporation of America. Phelps' design features plush, narrow fairways, and its namesake Forest Creek that comes into play on 11 holes. Many of the holes dogleg, and its most difficult holes are the long par 4s. These holes are especially evident on the back nine, with holes 10, 15, and 18 all playing well over 400 yards. The 15th is the most difficult, playing a bogey-welcoming, par 5-like 472 yards.

18th hole Photo submitted by BrandonTuckerGA on 11/13/2016
Good course in Northeast Austin area.
Nice course in home community. Greens were recently seeded so not great but fairways and tee boxes were good for early in the season. Some bunkers were like hitting off hard dirt. Houses are far enough back to not be a problem on most tee shots. Good layout that makes you think your way around the course with some blind tee shots and extreme doglegs. Will play again.
Good value but slow play
Very nice for a public facility but play was much too slow the day we went .
Challenging but fun
This course was the first for me to play since I moved here to RR. It's pricy but it's one of the best courses I've ever played. It's challenges your skills from driving to pitching to your putt. It's very well maintained and the staff is great. I will definitely be my "go to" course.
Very fun and challenging track
This was my first time playing Forest Creek GC and I will definitely return for some more enjoyable rounds! The course is in good shape, even in early April.
About the course: it has a lot of different challenges including lots of sharp dog legs, various water hazards, and strategically located bunkers. It has relatively large greens that aren't too sloped, but provide significant challenges. The fairways are wide on some holes and very narrow on others. Bottom line, there is sufficient variation to keep it exciting.
Conditions: The club house isn't anything special but the staff was very courteous and friendly. The food was good and they have a decent place to have some beers and watch some sports. The course is in good shape. Some tee boxes aren't very flat but the greens were rolling good and fairways were coming in nicely.
Overall, I'd recommend the course to beginners and advanced golfers. Pace of play was about 4 hrs on a Sunday afternoon and it is a nice place to play.
FAST Greens!
Windy day, but biggest problem where the greens. Very fast, compact, no stick on landing, ball would roll and roll. They were probably working on them, but made for a difficult day of play. Also very slow play. Should not take 5 1/2 hours to go 18. We sometimes got stacked up 4 groups deep waiting to tee off at the next hole.
A nice variety of holes
I played the course twice and have enjoyed both experiences. The most recent round was played in very windy conditions and the greens were very difficult. The ball was almost impossible to stop on putts that were downslope and down wind. Even though my score was higher than usual I still enjoyed the round due to the variety of tee shots demanded and a never boring layout.
Fun golf course
I have to say that the course was in better shape this time I played. The greens were very plush and some more forgiving than others. The green speed was good for the average golfer to enjoy, probably rolling at around a 9.5. This course is more of a placement golf course, you need to hit long irons or hybrids off the tee to leave yourself with a good approach shot. Definitely recommend the course to golfers of all levels, as they have good tee selection.
Nice layout
Interesting course challenging layout but not in really good shape
Terrible bunkers
Great course, wrong time of year
I love Forest Creek and always have. This winter has been exceptionally rough on the condition this year. Always worth playing but not at full price right now...
Nice layout/ challenging
The only negative comment is that the staff pulled all the pins before we were finished. We played the last five holes without pins! The young man who pulled them said they knew they were pulling them early and they were sorry.
A great course if conditions were better
When I played at Forest Creek, it was after several days of rain, so everything in this review is in that context.
I thoroughly enjoyed the layout of this course. Lots of doglegs, elevation changes, and opportunities to birdie. However, good scores are not likely for first timers; a knowledge of Forest Creek's various challenges is required for shooting a round that will produce bragging rights. For example, a couple of the par 5's are wide open and almost compel one to use driver. However, the smart play is to use 3 wood to control the shot and place the ball to the short side of the dogleg, saving over 150 yards on the approach. In addition, on a few holes there are creeks or other water hazards that are in play on the approach that are not easy to see or judge from where the ball lies.
Unfortunately, the day I played, holes 8,9, and 18 were closed but noone in the pro shop mentioned this when I checked in. In fact, the pro in the clubhouse nary spoke a word other than directing me to the guy with whom I was to share a cart. Especially on days when holes are closed and conditions are rough, it's essential for course personnel to be candid and forthcoming. That was not the case at Forest Creek.
Having worked on maintenance crews at three different golf courses, I know how difficult it is to maintain good conditions after several days of rain, especially if sand has been washed out of bunkers. The key is to rake the bunkers to distribute remaining sand and to not let the existing materials harden as they dry. Apparantly, no one was working the morning maintenance rounds the day I played (or the day before) because the bunkers hadn't been raked or tended to in any way for some time. I bent a SW trying to hit out of a bunker on the 11th hole because the sand was so compacted and hard. There's simply no excuse for this on a course considered one of the finer tracks in the Austin area. If the superintendant couldn't or didn't want the bunkers dressed for play, the pro shop should tell all players so, and allow for "no closer to the pin" drops.
I will return to play Forest Creek again, the conditions above notwithstanding. The layout and location are too good to not give it another chance.
Good value, nice greens and layout
Got for $11 on golfnow. It had rained a lot overnight and a bit during the round. Holes 8 and 9 were closed due to weather conditions. Greens were smooth and above average speed. Layout was nice, its over 7000 from the tips. Definitely will play it on a nice dry day again as many bunkers were pooled with water. The golf carts are fast.
course and help were excellent.
enjoyed everything about the experience. the young man even located a lost iron and called me to let me know it would be there at my convenience.
Course is in good shape. Target style golf. Very few driver holes.
I am new to the area and have been looking for a course to play on a regular basis. Fairways, rough, and greens (a little slow) were in good shape throughout the course. The only reason I will not go back is play off the tee. There are very few driver holes on this course. The back nine had more than the front nine but not enough to bring me back. I am not the longest player but I had trouble finding places to hit the ball off the tee with anything longer than hybrid on many holes. I hit driver on about half of the par 4 and 5s and probably should not have hit driver on one or two of those. If you enjoy playing target golf off the tee this course will be fun, but if you like to hit the driver this course is a terrible set up.
Always challenging track requiring some "golf" shots if you really want to score well.
A little slow going when we caught up to some players ahead of us on the 7th hole. Good track that was maintained well.
Fantastic course for the money
Pro shop staff could stand to be a little bit nicer but Rest of staff was very nice. Courses in best shape in 10 years.
Course in good conditions considering Texas drought conditions.
Course was in good conditions. On this particular day no range balls were available and course play was slow.
One of my new favorites
I have played many course in the central Texas area, and this course is one of the few hidden gems.
