Magic Golf
What a fabulous course! Breathtaking views, fab condition for winter. Got to be one of my favourites!!!
Very slow. Got stuck behind a society
I used to be a member here many years ago. The course conditions have improved greatly since then. It was unfortunate that we got stuck behind a big society resulting in a very long round. As always on a course on common land there were walkers everywhere which I do understand will happen but on top of the delays we experienced did get frustrating.
All in all a great day on a course I do love, but frustrating.
Brilliant quirky course
Course and in particular, the greens were in great condition. It clearly helps that the course is so high up, as the course was pretty much dry underfoot whereas most of the courses locally were underwater. Only issue is the parking, as it took about 20 minutes to find a parking space as you are fighting with walkers for car parking spaces. Also, 1-2 groups who started behind us decided to skip holes around the 7th-10th holes which created bottlenecks as the course was already fully booked and backed up. However, all in all I fully recommend a trip to Cleeve Hill GC and even better when it is a £21 Hot Deal.
Great Course in the Winter
Played Cleeve Hill as all other courses were shut with it being December! Course drains really well because of its height. Could compress a ball on the fairway in December! Greens were immaculate. Up there the winds are strong so not for the faint hearted golfer on a blustery day. Nice cafe with a fire place as the clubhouse. Good pasty and pint of Guiness after.
An Assault course with a bit of golf!
I have been playing golf for 40 years and I can safely say this is the worst golf course I have ever played. Other than a couple of holes, the constant uphill climb was tiring and just a bit tedious after only a few holes. There are t any flat fairways to hit the ball from. Alwys an uphill or Dow hill lie. There were t any bins on the course or ball washers. The directions to the next home were dubious. The only redeeming feature were the breathtaking views. But, if I wanted to go on an S.A.S. Hike then I would’ve done so. One of our 4 ball was a 73 year old man who gave up after 9 cos he couldn’t handle the steep inclines on every single hole. There was no forewarning of this. We paid for the views and that was it. If you enjoy the game of golf then don’t play here.
Great day of golf
On arrival had a vegan sausage bap and tea, which set us nicely for the day. Weather was good, I suspect on a windy day it would be quite tricky in this high setting. Good test of golf but not too tricky for my wife who is still in her first year of playing. A bit up and down, but not as much as it seems on first impressions. Would definitely play again.
Fantastic inland links
Very enjoyable round of golf, great condition greens and fantastic panoramic views.
Really enjoyable round
I played here for the first time at the start of August. I nearly turned round when I got into the car park as I thought I was in the wrong place! All I could see were walkers and sheep.
Once inside the pro shop. I found the staff to be friendly and accommodating. It was lucky the scorecard has a little map of the holes on the back as you do need it when playing as a one ball for the first time.
The first tee is a blind shot into the Hills so make sure you pay attention to the black and white markers. You'll need them all round the course!
Once you get your head around the blind shots and rolling hill fairways, you'll find the course to be a really interesting challenge and something totally different to your normal course if your used to playing off lush, flat fairways. The challenge will definitely help develop and improve your shot choices and overall game.
I've since been back to play here and will continue to do so whenever I'm in the area and have the time.
I'm glad I found this course and hope to play again soon
Disappointed
Greens were so long it was ridiculous,, spoilt what would of been a amazing day.
Top track
Excellent and unique layout , lots of open fairways and challenging approach shots, and possibly the best back to back par 3’s I have played. Well worth the fee and the food is great too.
Fantastic views in glorious sunshine
As our course had been very wet, we travelled 27 miles to play Cleeve Hill which drains very well.
We were not disappointed. The course had been improved since we last played, i.e. the greens in particular. However., the rest course was very well maintained in general.
The usual need to wait on walkers who do not seem to sense the dander involved when amateur golfers are firing balls all over the place…
It was busy, however, play flowed well. There are no trees and apart from some gorse here and there and several disused quarry gullies, it is difficult to lose a ball so this helps with ‘pace of play’.
The sun shone all through our afternoon round and the wind was gentle.
A most enjoyable experience,
They have hiked their green fees up since our last visit, however k if you want to experience something very different in golf come play here.
This course is a test
Well what can I say course was in great condition greens were nice small but nice you have to bring your A game to this course as its brutal if you off line. I would play here again as is a great test I got on a deal and feel the 35 -40 per round on full price is a bit steep as course is shared with alot of walkers and dog walkers. But overall a great day
Such a shame it’s over priced
A lovely course on a nice day. Such a shame it’s £35 in winter and £40 in summer. It’s not competitively priced given other courses in the area… Lilly brook and Puckrup are just a few which offer more variety and a better standard of course for a similar or lower price.
Love this course
Regularly play here along with a few other courses and love the unique nature of the course. First time in a while I’ve played in a howling wind like I did Saturday and it becomes a challenge like no other on the table top on the hill, being able to play proper links low flight golf becomes a necessity!
Given the weather recently, fairways and rough both very hard at the moment, but could not fault the greens. Very green, very true, fair paced, a testament to the work the greenkeepers put in.
The only hole that caused any issue is the 9th - a very narrow fairway meant that any ball slightly off was incredibly hard to find - yes that’s part of golf, but it backed a few groups up and it’s not even like it’s due to a horrendously offline and bad shot. Don’t know what the answer is for it to be honest, as for a anyone that doesn’t drive the ball miles, they’re slightly blind to where the ball lands so not easy to track. Obviously don’t want to rejig the design, but that’s one I’d like to see something done.
All in all a fantastic and quirky course!
Any real golfers with a modicum of adventure in their spirit should discount this review.
I can only imagine this has been written by a relatively unfit aged gentleman that is used to a flat parkland course.
Make no mistake, this golf course is a unique cracker of a track. But perhaps not for the stuffy and upright golfer that prefers the bland.
