La Loma at Fort Sam Houston Golf Course
About
The La Loma course is one of two 18-hole, championship courses at the historic Fort Sam Houston. The facility hosted the Texas Open in the '50s and '60s, making it the only military facility to ever host a PGA event. La Loma has its fair share of challenges but overall the other course at the club, Salado del Rio, is the more demanding of the two. The fairways are tree-lined but not as tight as on the other golf course, lending a more forgiving quality to La Loma. The greens are medium in both size and speed and there are strategically placed bunkers throughout the course. Fort Sam Houston also has a practice chipping green and a lighted driving range for golfers to use.

What a Mess
Do know where the screw up was, either the golf course or golf now. But when I checked in the told me I would be playing on a different course and the times were double booked. Henceforth a real mess at the first tee. Now through in no starter and things almost got ugly. The course was good and the greens were fast. Maybe next time they’ll get their act together!
Great experience
Course is in great shape! The staff was friendly and also had a delicious lunch. We had so much fun we ended up playing 36 holes. Both courses has really nice greens. 5 stars for the Ft Sam golf course!!
Course was pretty beat up
The course was pretty beat up. The fairways are in bad shape, super bumpy, dry with dead grass, and with weeds overgrowing. The greens however were in decent condition compared to the fairways. This course needs some serious upkeep for it to compete with the other munis in San Antonio.
Salado
We had booked La Loma but there was a Junior tournament that was scheduled before our tee time. We moved to Salado to make sure we didn’t weren’t on the heels of the boys and girls playing in the tourney.
Nice course layout. Lots of doglegs, so club choice is important. Greens were aerated in the past few months, most greens were grown back but one or two still had some signs of the punching (our Texas summer is hard on them). Fun course and I would definetly go back.
Great test of golf from the tips.
Played La Loma again after twenty years - greens are in great shape better than most Alamo trail greens. Fairways have some bad patches including some areas where st Augustine grass has invaded.
Pace of play was great - had a great time
All Around Pleasant
Greens in superb condition, evenly trimmed and well cared for across the 18 holes. This is obviously a well tended course. Always a pleasure to play Fort Sam from the friendly staff to the beautifully laid out course.
La Loma
Course overall was in really good shape. Lightly sanded greens made for Slow putting would be the only complaint

Great morning for a round of golf! Played this course back in 1971 while Fort Sam Houston was my duty station. Enjoy playing either course!
Slow..Slow...slow
My Brothers and son and I play the 2 courses here at Fort Sam quite a bit and we love it but Marshall's are needed at times because the foursome in front of us since hole 10 would not let anyone thru..not taking bunkers and took forever to play. We had to yell out on hole 17 because they decided to go to the restroom after they tee off and decided to finish play after stepping out of the restroom. We were a foursome and let a single go thru and notice a 2some coming up which 1 of then works at the course and we were going to let them play thru..anyone looking to play FortSam..Great Courses..Awesome Staff...NO Golf Etiquette on course
Great course
Course was very good for my first round. Weather was mildly warm, but very windy for the first 9 holes. Pace of play was excellent. Difficulty finding some holes due to marker's missing and a bridge washout, but excellent overall. I will play this course many more times as it was enjoyable.
One of my favorite
My girlfriend & I have officially played both courses on this property and loved them both, however it’s hard to decide which one is my favorite.... love them both :)))
A genuine cow pasture
The course was in horrible condition. The greens were in atrocious shape. There were burnouts and high-cut green patches on almost every Green. The sand traps had no sand and we're mostly mud and gravel. The course needs massive work before it can be recommended for Outsiders to play.
Good course
the staff is very abrupt and not very helpful. Course was fun and challenging.
Pace of play was horrible
The course is nice, however the pace of play was rough to get through. Had two groups (4 some and 3 some) in front of my twosome. Pulled up to the group in front of us multiple times at the next tee box, but never given the opportunity to play through.
La Loma
The fairways are kind of bare, it had been raining for several days. Greens are in better shape.
Enjoyable course
Despite winter dormant conditions greens were very playable. Layout was interesting. Great value course that did not disappoint.
Underrated-forgotten gem.
Better than Canon Springs and many other head courses.
Why I say this? 1. Great value for your money: low price for the same quality as the Alamo Golf Trail. 2. Not busy, play as fast or as slow as you want! It’s almost all to yourself; play like you own the the place!
