Avoid at all costs - taking your money
I've played Frodsham on more than one occasion and always enjoyed the course. Yes the greens in the past haven't been perfect but they've been playable. Unfortunately that's not the case now, and I urge you to avoid at all costs. The greens are burnt, bare and have no grass on them whatsoever. The course shouldn't be charging full price, let alone half price with the greens in this state. It's. a real shame but I can only see the course going in one direction. It pains me to say it but save your money as you will only be disappointed and left with a feeling (as I was) of "they've had me over here".
From hero to zero
As a former member and now as a casual visitor to Frodsham Golf course I have played it many times, however, on my most recent visit my colleagues and I found the course to be in the worst condition we have every experience at Frodsham.
On arrival you will find the main car park closed because the original clubhouse and pros shop are being converted into a nursery!!! Since there is no pros shop you then confirm you have a booking to a man sitting in his car. How you proceed if you just turn up to play is questionable.
After struggling through the 12 inch deep stone (pebble) path to the 1st tee you will find that you do not tee off from the normal tee, but rather a half finished teeing area; this should possibly alert you as to what other travails to expect.
On reaching the first green you will find it to be devoid of grass, that you are effectively putting on soil and that this continues with all of the greens except the 4th - 7th. The greens at the local municipal we recently played where in better condition than those at Frodsham.
Whilst some of the teeing areas have been moved back, due to them not having bedded in they are uneven and that even if you go back two club lengths it is difficult to find a flat spot.
Though it is nice to see potential improvements being made to the course at the same time a number of strategic bunkers and water hazards have either been filled in or are now so overgrown as to be redundant.
At the end of our round we made comment to the "starter" as to the state of the greens with him informing us that they where burnt due to the recent hot weather and had recently had had several thousand gallons of water used on them, however, when we spoke in the car park with a member he informed the reason the greens where so brown was that the management has furloughed all of its staff; and it shows.
The "starter" had also suggested, even though they are currently closed, that we should have a look at the new clubhouse and pros shop. Compared with the original clubhouse and pros shop they are glorified sheds, that the clubhouse is no more than what you would expect at the mid point of a Birkdale style course, that it is doubtful if it could handle a society of even 10 players.
Until there are drastic quality improvements to the course, then for the same money you would be better to consider other courses that charge a similar rate, and who maintain the quality of the course and facilities.
Four of us had another enjoyable 18 holes at FGC!
Four of us had another enjoyable 18 holes at the tree-lined FGC - the views overlooking the River Mersey Estuary are 'always' spectacular! The greens were still not good, but vastly improved from when we played 2 weeks ago, tees and fairways very playable (I never had to improve my lie); everyone friendly, and with some kind weather the course will soon improve more...we'll be back, not many places one can have 4-5 hours of fun for around £20!
Effort and enjoyment!
I have been a member now for 5 weeks at this club after moving to the village and deciding to take my old hobby back up after a few years out due to work and family commitments.
My first impression was positive as Paul the owner was very approachable and encouraging when I enquired about becoming a member, this also led to me enrolling my son who is 8 as I felt the owner was offering a club that was accessible to all levels of golfer which made me feel comfortable and welcome.
Now for the course, when I joined we were all just coming out of full COVID lockdown and an horrendous heatwave that lasted some 8 weeks, this naturally took its toll on the greens and some parts of the fare ways as stated in some of the other reviews.
Moving to the present and after just coming back from my 2nd round of 18 holes in 24 hours I have to say the green keepers deserve a massive amount of credit, the greens are looking massively improved and are now getting back to there former glory and the fare ways this morning with the fresh pattern cut into them were 1st class. All this has took time and effort which we must afford the course after a disastrous event like the lockdown and the Sahara like conditions which happened simultaneously. Other members are polite and courteous and tee times are managed well, all in all I’m very pleased I joined and I know the deeper we get into the summer the better the course and in particular the greens will become. Well done everyone at Frodsham Golf course.
Avoid until the greens are sorted
Been to Frodsham many times before and always enjoyed it, first visit this year. Little bit of work going on at the clubhouse so a couple of tees moved, no problem there. Fairways in good condition, all seemed well until you knock one onto the first green. My word, for a course which usually has impeccable putting conditions they are a mess! Every green was a game of spot the blade of grass. Like putting on a combination of a flatted flower bed and a bunker. Hugely disappointed, especially for full price and no warnings of what you are about to encounter. No 150 posts up either. All agreed we won’t be going back for a long long time.
This course was once a really good course and value for money now the Greens are so bad they have no grass on them. Won't be playing here again.
Course should be closed.
This course should not be open in it's current state, it's a shame it wont let me upload the pictures of the greens I took because it's hard to beleive how bad they are! There is no grass just rock hard mud which is like putting on concrete. It's disgusting that no mention of this is made at the point of booking! This course used to be fantastic but it surely is on the brink of closure. RIP Frodsham GC!
Sad times at Frodsham...
Yesterday, I played Frodsham Golf Course for the first time in a few years.
Back in the day, the club house was friendly and welcoming. The course was a great challenge with fantastic greens and always in my eyes my value for money.
However fast forward to 2020, 3 friends joined me yesterday on what a thought was a great deal at £15?
Wow, was I wrong! Below is a list for the owners, members & golf professionals at Frodsham.
1) The Club house is now a new nursery... shocking decision.
2) A bloke checked our tee and sat in a car... poor standards.
3) The new paths are simply shocking & really poor standards with home made signs.
4) The greens were simply shocking & the club should be ashamed!
5) No dress code? Lads walking wound in tracksuits... poor tone!
Overall, very poor & needs to return to its former glory... if not just close Frodsham Golf Club!
Stay away
Absolutely shocking condition. This course used to be great a couple of years ago. Will never play this course ever again, not even at half the price. Can't believe they are charging £20 to play, what a joke.
Review
Got a deal for me and my dad £13 a piece which was value. Greens were very poor due to weather but we was warned this prior to playing. With a bit better weather and a bit more care and attention this course has good potential. We will come again in a few month and hopefully see the improvements
Nice layout, greens a state
I've played a few courses since lockdown and whilst I appreciate the courses aren't going to be in perfect condition, the courses have all been playable. The greens at frodsham are terrible since lockdown. May as well have been putting in my back garden. Shame as course layout is nice.
Muddy and wet greens
Greens in very poor condition. They were muddy and wet as well as very bobbly. Got to the point where we just played tee to green then picked up and moved on as the greens were in terrible condition.
Poor
This course should not be open, walked off after 4 holes, no green keeper is bringing this course back to life anytime soon, the greens had 2” cracks running through, fairways where over grown and patched. Over all, shocking course.
Stay away!!! Poor!!! Frustrating!!! No standards!
Due to covid19 rules we all know by following the rules means it ends faster. The course allowed people to play four balls which isn’t allowed, ball cleaners were not decommissioned and where available for use. Benches were available to sit on and not ribboned off. People playing out of bunkers!
As for the course
No score card provided, Considering all courses haven’t been used for 3 months, this place looked like it had been used as rugby pitch! The whole course! Every green was unplayable, no grass atall! Rock hard ground! Cracked ground throughout! I was lucky to sink a put in 3 shots! Most tees covered in weeds especially the 18th. Not even any yard markers, litter everywhere’s, shocking day of golf and I will not be returning.
Greens in awful condition
I know we are just moving out of lockdown and things are difficult but the condition of the greens at Frodsham are absolutely shocking as they don’t appear to have been watered at all during this period. Huge cracks, no grass as the picture shows. Would not recommend at all.
Sorry guys, you need to sort the greens
Second time in a week, but the greens are bare and brown. Other courses have watered and manicured theirs. Thought they might be better second time around, but have deteriorated in a week. Won’t be back for a while in that condition...sorry
Course could be great but..
Taking current situation in to account course was ok.. fairways roughs are good but all greens are pretty poor, rock hard with little to no grass in places. Course needs watered, when it rains again course will be good. Would go back to the course as everyone was friendly and overall enjoyed playing there.
Worse course I’ve ever played!
The course is in dire condition, please do not waste your money playing it! It should not be open and they certainly shouldn’t be charging for it. Greens completely unplayable dust bowls with cracks the size of the Grand Canyon.
