Greatwood Golf Club
About
Greatwood is known for its white sand bunkers and impressive par 3s, three of which play right at or over 200 yards. The 1989 Carlton Gipson design features elevated tees and greens that sandwich plush fairways and are contoured with mounds.
The 434-yard par 4 hole 5 is one difficult par, featuring a fairways loaded with bunkers and involves water on the approach. No. 18 goes 576, yards. While the tee shot is fairly standard, the second shot must land short of a plateau and might involve a blind approach shot if placed too far to the left. The intimidating approach plays into a green surrounded by water on three sides.
Getting there : From Hwy. 59 south, turn left on Crab River Rd., then make a left onto the other side of Hwy. 59. Look for Greatwood Pkwy. and make another left when you get there.

Greatwood Golf
First impression of the clubhouse was not great. Dirty, old, and pro shop had cobb webs in the ceiling. Bathrooms could use a cleaning. Course on the other hand was solid. Carts could use some TLC. Greens rolled nice. Good layout. Friendly course mascot gator that lays on the bank.

I liked the course and the conditions. Sand was consistent and in good shape. The greens were not perfect but better than average with some tricky/fun pin placement. The check in staff was friendly and prompt.
The cart paths need a lot of work.
Course layout is good, course just needs better maintenance, fairways are hard. If you are playing for distance you will definitely get it here. The greens are great despite what the rest of the course looks like and it is challenging. There are other courses in the area that you get more for your buck….
Decent course
Fun run. Needs a little tlc but nothing that will ruin your round.
Wednesday Afternoon at Greatwood
Course condition was fair and almost empty due to inclement weather (on and off rain for the entire round! Good value for money though!
Excellent Layout Poor conditions
Greatwood continues to go down in quality due to poor maintenance. 5 years ago, it was my favorite course in the Houston area.
The greens are spotty and varying speed, the bunkers are often hard packed sand.
The fairways are hard as rock with no grass. Makes the course much easier as the drives roll a long way.
Tee boxes are never watered. Only plastic tees are usable.
Good to be back golfing
Greens were fast but true enough to sink a few long putts. Lack of rain made for plenty of roll on the fairways. Wish I could figure out the first hole. Double bogey…again.
Like playing in a parking lot
I've played here for many years, but today was the WORST I've ever encountered.
First, if you want the golfers to dress appropriately according to etiquette, then the staff should do the same. While very polite, the lady in the clubhouse was dressed like she's headed to the beach with a cutoff shirt exposing her middle area. If I was to show up to play like that, I would be stopped.
The tee boxes are as hard as a rock. On the par 3s, I couldn't push the tee far enough into the tee box to do any good. So I just hit off of the thin grass. On the par 4s and 5s, I put the tee inside of a Crack on many holes. If not, I broke the tee on every hole that I didn't find a crack to put it into.
The fairways...... well, they aren't true fairways. On most holes, hitting the tee shot in the middle of the fairway wasn't an advantage. I hit the ball better out of the rough. Plus, the fairways are so bumpy now that my bag fell off of the cart going down the middle of the 8th fairway. They used to be smooth and I actually had trouble finding a ball in the middle of the fairway that fell into one of these potholes.
I thought they got new carts a couple of years ago, but mine squeaked & rattled so much, I though I was driving a 1970s car from a junkyard..
Overall, it was not a good experience and something that I wasn't expecting. The course has been going downhill for a few years, but it's always been decent. Today wasn't that...
Challenging Public Track
For the price, it’s the best public course in Sugar Land. There are some well designed holes that provide as much or as little challenge as you want depending on which tees you want to play.
Greatwood
Lots of water hazards in play, good track. Typical conditions for February, greens were decent
Good course but pace of play can be awful
My buddies and I like the layout, especially the back 9. Perhaps the two best finishing holes around for a public course. However, there is no marshall so pace of play can be an issue.
Good value golf
Played a few times using the best value tags.....would be interested in a monthly offer if available as we only holiday in this area occasionally
Avoid at all cost
First of all arrived 30 early to warm up and hit range balls. Informed no carts available or they didn’t have enough keys. At turn wanted simple warm food, informed the “chef” was gone for the day. Mind you this was 4pm on a Saturday. No beverage cart. And course is in terrible shape. No fairway grass, greens patchy, place tore up by hogs. This place has gone way down hill. Avoid if possible.
