Greatwood Golf Club
About
Greatwood is known for its white sand bunkers and impressive par 3s, three of which play right at or over 200 yards. The 1989 Carlton Gipson design features elevated tees and greens that sandwich plush fairways and are contoured with mounds.
The 434-yard par 4 hole 5 is one difficult par, featuring a fairways loaded with bunkers and involves water on the approach. No. 18 goes 576, yards. While the tee shot is fairly standard, the second shot must land short of a plateau and might involve a blind approach shot if placed too far to the left. The intimidating approach plays into a green surrounded by water on three sides.
Getting there : From Hwy. 59 south, turn left on Crab River Rd., then make a left onto the other side of Hwy. 59. Look for Greatwood Pkwy. and make another left when you get there.

Water
Course needs water to soften up and help greens. Fun course layout
Needs some love
I hadn’t played Greatwood in recent years. Back in Houston visiting friends, i played it late April, 2+ months after the Big Freeze of 2021. Course conditioning was subpar, especially the greens. Hopefully the grass will fill back in.
IMHO
I enjoy playing here. The value is good for a course that could be great. However, there were so many worn out, dirt areas around the fairways and greens. The putting greens were in poor shape and really bumpy, but still I enjoyed the golf. Just wish the course was in better shape. Afterwards, we went to the clubhouse and had hotdogs that looked like they were made the day b4 and there were 2 toddlers of employees running around and playing. Ill end it there.
Horrible pace of play for a Thursday
Seems like this course is going downhill more and more. I can understand that the greens were recently top dressed, and the overall course conditions aren’t bad, but the last few times I’ve played here over the last 12 months, pace of play has been horrible. Today seemed to be even worse. About a 10-15 minute wait at the tee box starting from the first hole, #9 was a 20 minute wait to tee off and #10 was about the same. My twosome ended up skipping a slow foursome on #11 and just when we thought we could sail on through, we ran into a 3-some that was just slow as molasses. And there were no groups in front of them for at least 2 holes. No Marshall on the course to speed things up either. My playing partner and I agreed not to return anytime soon.
Greens are non existent
The greens are partial dirt with clumps of grass iccaisinally. Worst greens I have ever played on. Very thin spotty grass on fairways. Avoid this course. I’ve played here occasionally over the years and it’s beyond terrible.
Course Requires Course Knowledge
Greatwood is a nice course but requires sound course knowledge. Most fairways are turtle back and require that you place the ball well. Overall good layout and condition. High handicap beware this can be highly penal shotmakers course. It is easy to become frustrated hitting decent shots that don’t score.
Greens are horrible!
This course is in bad shape. Don't waste your money here until they've gotten the course back in shape. I won't be back for at least a year. For $60, there are at least 20 courses in the Houston area I can play for less and have better grass and greens.
Not worth the money
Tee boxes, fairways and greens are in horrible shape overall. Very dry and don’t blame the freeze. Other courses have already bounced back. For the cost this course is a rip off. $35 Max someone should pay until it’s up to par.
Disappointed Unfortunately
It’s been over 20 years since I’ve played Greatwood. Back then it was a pristine club and well maintained course. Unfortunately time has not been good to the course. The club house was still top notch but the course was severely lacking. Fairways had lots of dirt areas with no grass. Also cracks in the ground from lack of watering. Greens were in bad condition but that may have been due to the recent freeze. Tee boxes were nicely maintained. Some sand trap had nice white fluffy condition while other had rust colored sand barely an inch thick.
The price was great but the course was disappointing. The layout is awesome if they would spend some $$$ the course could be top notch.
Trash Course - Don’t Waste Your Money
5+ hour round, the guy working the register was a total a-hole, course was in terrible shape. This place is a complete joke
Course was in pretty good shape but the pace of play was really slow today. range tee box was really rough to get warmed up on. Need some maintenance and some greenskeeper attention.
