Greatwood Golf Club
About
Greatwood is known for its white sand bunkers and impressive par 3s, three of which play right at or over 200 yards. The 1989 Carlton Gipson design features elevated tees and greens that sandwich plush fairways and are contoured with mounds.
The 434-yard par 4 hole 5 is one difficult par, featuring a fairways loaded with bunkers and involves water on the approach. No. 18 goes 576, yards. While the tee shot is fairly standard, the second shot must land short of a plateau and might involve a blind approach shot if placed too far to the left. The intimidating approach plays into a green surrounded by water on three sides.
Getting there : From Hwy. 59 south, turn left on Crab River Rd., then make a left onto the other side of Hwy. 59. Look for Greatwood Pkwy. and make another left when you get there.

Do not play
Overall course is not worth more than $20. Greens were terrible. Fairways had little to no grass. Biggest let down was the greens, would barely call them playable. Spend money somewhere else.
Customer Service
gentleman behind the counter could have cared less if I even played . Never looked at me eye to eye.
Greatwood golf course
First time playing this course it was a little challenging. I will know better for the next time I play there. Nice layout. Fairways weren't very plush and the greens were good but a few were bumpy because of weeds of some sort. Helps to know whether to keep the ball above or below the hole because of some nice slopes. We liked it and will be back again.
Great wood
We had a great time, took a friend with me and he enjoy it cery much.
No complaints
Pace of play
Every time I golf here, it is a minimum of 4 1/2 hour round. Waited on a 5 sum in front of us all day yesterday. No Marshall to keep pace moving. This seems to be the norm here. I don’t plan on ever golfing here again.
Close to home
I was impress, play after a storm and tee boxes were dried, fairway was mosthly dry. Greens were great.. love these place..
Play fast and move on
I played early, before a tournament started. The tournament did not affect my play. Large fairways with a few holes that have forced carries make the course interesting and challenging.
Long wait
We had to wait over 45 mins for the golf cart
We did not even finish 18 th due to the long wait and sunset
Not a good time
Tough Pins/Nice greens
Greens were in great shape for this time of year. Pins were set in tough spots on some pretty steep slopes which was a challenge but one that I enjoyed. First time out will definitely be back again.
Great Dismal Swamp
Course drains very poorly! Mud, mud, mud everywhere, standing water in many places, and lumpy, bumpy pot-marked fairways. Men’s room door on lower level of club house was broken; I thought for a while I was going to be trapped inside. The facility is obviously not being properly maintained. But the worst part was the incredibly slow pace of play - 4 hours 45 minutes! I won’t be back.
Need a Marshall!
My buddies and I keep returning to Greatwood because the back 9 is, in our opinion, the best back 9 for a public course in the area. Unfortunately, it is hit and miss regarding pace of play. Wednesday Nov 25 we teed off at 12:15. Two groups ahead of us was a 5-some, followed by a 2-some. They were both extremely slow!!!! By the time we finished the 4th hole it was almost 2:00!! While driving to the 5th hole we looked over and noticed there was no one on the 7th tee box and no one on the green on # 6. So, we skipped holes 5 and 6 (and the 5-some!!!) and finished the front and back 9 by 4:15 pm. I am pretty sure the 5-some and everybody behind them failed to finish. They need a marshall.
