Greatwood Golf Club
About
Greatwood is known for its white sand bunkers and impressive par 3s, three of which play right at or over 200 yards. The 1989 Carlton Gipson design features elevated tees and greens that sandwich plush fairways and are contoured with mounds.
The 434-yard par 4 hole 5 is one difficult par, featuring a fairways loaded with bunkers and involves water on the approach. No. 18 goes 576, yards. While the tee shot is fairly standard, the second shot must land short of a plateau and might involve a blind approach shot if placed too far to the left. The intimidating approach plays into a green surrounded by water on three sides.
Getting there : From Hwy. 59 south, turn left on Crab River Rd., then make a left onto the other side of Hwy. 59. Look for Greatwood Pkwy. and make another left when you get there.

A mixed bag
The good - The layout and shape of the holes is nice. I like how it's not a driver all day kind of course. I hit hybrids off the tee 4 times playing from the blues. The course winds through a housing development but you don't feel crowded by the houses. There is plenty of room. Also it's a meandering layout so no two holes are side by side. Each hole feels isolated from the rest.
The bad - The greens. They are recovering from a punch but judging from the other comments they may never be in great shape. Which is a shame. The greens are farily small and with some care could roll smooth and true if not necessarily fast. Also the bunkers are a little rough. i saw a guy on a tractor raking one but on a hole to hole basis I'm not sure how much it happens. Like another commenter mentioned - rake a spot and play it from there. Sadly its what I've come to expect from public golf in the greater Houston area. Even at courses that charge substantially more.
Verdict - This is a course with potential. The routing is comfortable and there are a few challenging views from the tee boxes. Tee to green it is fun to play. But its a crapshoot on the greens.
Gnats and Bumpy Greens.
This course has a lot of potential and pretty good layout. It's a shame that they haven't tried to improve it. The greens were a disasters, obviously diseased and torn up. The worst part by far was the gnats. I'm used to mosquitoes, familiar with wearing bug spray, this was a whole different level. I was afraid to take a deep breathe, fearing I would swallow a plethora of bugs. Please put some care into this course or drop the price.
Gnats for days
As the title states - the amount of gnats and bugs on this course was absurd . Bug spray wouldn’t even help with the density of bugs.
Not that bad at all
I read the reviews before I played and was expecting the worse. The greens are not great but they are playable. The bunkers were not great but playable as well. If you are not a golf snob Greatwood will be a decent course to put in the rotation. With a little work it could be a wonderful course. I really enjoyed the layout.
Mediocre
Some of the worst greens and overall conditions for what could be an awesome course with that layout. Unless you had a range finder you couldn’t find any distance markers. For the money there’s a lot of other courses I’d prefer to play
Greens are terrible
The course was ok. Fairways were fine - though dried out and hard. The greens were horrific. Dead spots everywhere. Traps were either too full of soft sand or hard with rocks in them.
It was a Saturday but the course was empty. It made for a fast round but I guess people figured out it’s not worth the money to play.
Getting better
Improvements being made but not there yet.
Bunkers need work - rake and move ball. Greens still bumpy with some sandy areas. Fairways good and firm.
Still like the course - hope better in a couple of weeks??
Stay away save your money!
Course is in terrible shape especially the greens and the bugs were out thick (gnats mosquitoes)
Tire tracks on the fairway some of the bunkers were rock hard
Not worth What they charge for the green fees.
Not worth the money
I have been playing this golf course for nearly 4 years, and each year, the course conditions continue to progressively get worse. Greens are atrocious; they’ve been categorically lost..
This is not meant to be hyperbolic: no green is playable...there isn’t a true putting surface anywhere on the course. Ordinarily, good greens can make up for mediocre course conditions, but in this case, the greens act as a summary of course neglect.
Paying $20 for a round here is too much. I expect that the coming heat of the summer months will further destroy what is already an ignored layout. If the owners could manage to contract a legitimate SI or agronomist, then I would likely invite another round.
For now, stay away from this golf course
Sandy
Greens had been sanded. They were pretty rough. Traps were unplayable. All the sand was washed out.
Very poor greens
Greens were very patchy, in very bad shape. You can’t putt true because of how bad they are causing several strokes
What a joke
2/3 of the greens aren’t playable, not a soul seen performing any morning maintenance whatsoever. The practice green is indicative of most greens in the course which is horrific. What the heck happened to this once solid course?
Course need some recovery time. Fairways ok but greens not in good shape!! Sand traps need sand, some like hit off hard pan.
Alway like the layout!
Rock hard
To start with the carts for this course are in dire need of maintenance. The first one sounded like the transmission was going to drop out of it so I exchanged it for a second one Little did I know the parking brake on that one does not work. They dressed the greens today which should have little effect on how those greens play they're very hard fast and very dry. The fairways are extremely dry as well and the tee boxes are also very dry I broke a couple of tees today trying to place them in the ground in the tee boxes.
The course plays shorter than what it really is because the ground is so hard your ball will roll a substantially longer distance. Forget about trying to get it to stop cuz that's not going to happen. It's like I played this course twice today, it's the first and last time. This course needs a lot of water and more maintenance than what it has.
Greens
Golf course lost its first few greens. The 1st hole was the worst
Great Practice
If your looking to improve everything but your putting it is worth the price. The greens are a bit sandy and bumpy but the rest of the course was in good condition. Paying less than $20 for a round is well worth it.
