Greatwood Golf Club
About
Greatwood is known for its white sand bunkers and impressive par 3s, three of which play right at or over 200 yards. The 1989 Carlton Gipson design features elevated tees and greens that sandwich plush fairways and are contoured with mounds.
The 434-yard par 4 hole 5 is one difficult par, featuring a fairways loaded with bunkers and involves water on the approach. No. 18 goes 576, yards. While the tee shot is fairly standard, the second shot must land short of a plateau and might involve a blind approach shot if placed too far to the left. The intimidating approach plays into a green surrounded by water on three sides.
Getting there : From Hwy. 59 south, turn left on Crab River Rd., then make a left onto the other side of Hwy. 59. Look for Greatwood Pkwy. and make another left when you get there.

Course needs a lot of help on the conditions. Club house seemed old and the people didn’t seem to motivated. Would not play there again until it improved. 18th green was horrible.
Greens in terrible shape
I enjoy the Greatwood course layout. Shorter length and smaller greens allow target practice for short irons.
The hard fairways allow the ball to roll an extra 20 yards!
Hard fairways with little grass helps you improve ball first contact
I’ve played this course many times. The greens were in the worst shape I’ve ever seen them
Much worse than two weeks ago.
A great layout with poor majntenance
Greatwood has great bones. A treat for southwest Houston residents. However, in recent years, this course has been poorly maintained by a new maintenance company that has taken over this course, and Sienna Plantation. Examples of conditions:
1. We couldn’t put our tees into the ground. Insufficient watering has made the tee boxes hard like cement.
2. Greens were bumpy and in bad shape. Size of greens were reduced from years ago (perhaps in an attempt to save money?)
3. Outside of fairways were neglected: no first cut etc.
This is a gem of a layout and I hope a long term strategy of more $$ for maintenance is brought forward or this course will be drought with a downward spiral and downward pressure on its green fee.
Where are the marshals????
Even the best conditions and weather can be ruined by having to wait for the group ahead when the next two holes have no one.
Where are the marshals in charge of keeping golfers moving at the proper pace?
Great outing!
Course was in great condition, except for the greens that were aerated the day before, which I understand is a necessity. The only problem we encountered was our cart would randomly just lock the rear wheels while driving down the cart path and then we would have to cycle the pedals and key to get it going again.
Good Day at Greatwood
I enjoyed a good round at a decent Greatwood course. The weather was perfect, the course layout is fun, but the maintetance of the greens could be much better,
Course need help
Greens bad, sand bunkers very bad, fairways need grass, and tee boxes ok.
Most ok but greens are bumpy
Most of the course was good but the greens were bumpy. Not really take. Care of.
I feel the greens are the most important part of the course to be maintained.
Greens were horrible
Greens in horrible condition with lots of weeds. Me and the group i was playing with quit after 16 because of how long it took. 5 1/2 hours for 16 holes is ridiculous.
Great Potential, Needs some maintenance
This course has a lot of potential, but I found it generally run down and the greens were very bumpy (3/23/2025). The layout was nice, the neighborhood is beautiful, the course is challenging. However, the rough conditions of the greens, markings, bathrooms, water stations, ball cleaning stations, tee markers, etc. just seemed like a course that could be so great was being somewhat neglected. I don't expect perfection, but it seemed like perhaps the minimum was being done and it wasn't be closely watched and maintained for the price they offer it at. It was also a windy day, great temperature and sunny. The course could really be something. I think it needs some repair and better maintenance though.
