Macdonald Portal Hotel, Golf & Spa - Championship Course

Good layout, good test, some great holes

Buggy was dirty and not up to standard of everything else

This is a really well designed course some picturesque

Holes an intelligently planned out course. In terms of the condition props to the green keeper and the the team a well maintained course I can barely find a pitch mark on the green or divot in the fairway.

We have played both courses in the space of a week and would highly recommend both loved the full 18 on both but especially 1 par 3 on each - amazing

We didn't need one but a buggy might of been nice to have in parts

We didn't stay at the hotel so can't comment there but what we seen of it it looks nice

But 5* for the golf

Lovely course, lovely staff, great amenities but had to walk off after 13 holes (4 hours to play 13 holes with the sun low in the sky, wind blowing a gale and no good scorecards among us)

Mentioned when returning the buggy about it taking us 4 hours to play 13 holes and was told that was standard at the weekend. We even let the 2 ball behind us join us as we felt that bad about the waiting around

Course is a great challenge, long and well set out, unfortunately greens haven't been in best condition last few visits

Played. In early October, after a some heavy rain the week earlier, so as expected the fairways were a little soft but very playable ,greens were in good condition and thoroughly enjoyed the round would recommend

This course was challenging at times and is rather long. 4:45 for a 2 ball with no buggies and only waited to tee off once on a par 3.

Pin placements need a word as several holes had pins a couple of feet from the fringe and were on slops or hills, one hole had the pin 2 feet from a bunker to the right of the green with the left side of green being raised and the rest of the 300m2 of green was up as small slope and then pretty flat but contoured in sections. Might sound challenging but not when some of greens were huge and had a lot more to offer in terms of the approach rather than on the green itself. Almost as though the holes had been placed by someone who was reading instructions and doesn’t play golf. By the 3rd time we noticed it we started looking for the old hole placements to see if it was a common thing. The fact we could find like several old hole placements on most holes tells you a lot. Also a lot of damage around the cups from the flags was also a small issue.

Wanted to play this course for some time. Greens were responsive but a little slow for me. Biggest issues was the volume of people playing, we had to wait on every shot. Too many society bookings so would recommend a late afternoon tee off, we teed off early am.

This really is a great deal on golf now.

The course is Superb , excellent condition , generous off the tee but a good test of golf .

I expected way more and much better. Course layout was nice with some lovely holes. Fair ways were nice but tees and greens a big disappointment thought it would be much nicer. A society was out before us and there pace was slow which didnt help.

Challenging course with superb views over the Cheshire countryside.

Fantastic value and a lovely course to play. Condition was very good. Hardly anyone on the course so pace of play was excellent. Hope to go back again soon.

Staff in the shop were so friendly

This course is amazing really good lay out it will test your golf skills and its long course to which i thought was amazing ill be playing golf there again soon .
