Prepare to play back to back
First things first the course is great for a muni. A nice start with a par 5 and some interesting holes on the front 9 nine. The back 9 plays longer and is a bit 'tougher'. Plenty of trees on the course which makes it feel lovely, but don't get stuck on them.
Unfortunately the experience is consistently affected by how many people they have on the course. I guess they've been a victim of their own success but expect for tees to get backed up. Almost acceptable in normal times, but I write this review during the covid19 pandemic. Most other courses in the area have spaced out tee times, but not here. The course is packed and I can't quite believe this is safe. They have implemented some great ideas such as the ability to get your ball out of the hole with a clever device you lift with your putter. But this doesn't make up for how prepared they are to fill the course to the brim. It's the standard greeting with anyone on the course, and I think verges on irresponsible.
Good value for money
Good golf course for average golfer. I play of 14 and hit 6 over so was not to much of a difficult course.
Forgiving Course
So the new club house and ammenties are a big Improvement. Staff are polite and helpful.
The course itself is fairly short and open. There are plenty of relatively short par fours which for long hitters driveable. The fairways and greens are good and have improved over the last few years. If you go badly wrong off the tees the heavy rough is long in the summer. But really you shouldn't be hitting it as the fairways are v open with few obstacles. The bunkers are well filled and in good order.
If you want a course to give you confidence play here. My handicap is around 15 but I can play this course just into single figures which gives you an idea of the difficulty level.
Overall a very decent public course to make you feel better than you actually are.
Xxx
Good coarse with a great variation of holes and in very good condition with a excellent price
Course in reasonable condition considering the wet weather, staff working hard to rid course of the leaves everywhere, and seemed to be installing new winter tees.
Course was in fantastic condition shame the pace of play was appalling.
Shame no marshalls
Course in itself was good, but had play ruined by a lot of anti socials located around the course. Firstly on the first hole, locals let out Alsatians to run round the course, followed further up by another local letting out 3 staffs. Meant to be a golf course not a local park for dogs.
Secondly on the 11th, local kids entered the course to mess about, moving flags and putting off other golfers, and lastly another local used the 9th near end of day to practise with his drone, again putting off the golf players.
The course in itself is great, with greens to a good standard, and good longer back nines to test your longer game.
Shame no marshalls around to monitor the course, as this is letting down the standard of the club.
Good value
Probably one of the better courses in the area
Some fun slopes and gradients which make you think about club selection
Pype Hayes on a cold & windy day
Weather better than forecast although still cold & windy. Earlier bouts of rain resulted in a few patches of standing water on the fairways. Quite a few temporary greens on the first nine holes but only one on the back nine, the 18th. Course overall in good condition despite all the bad weather. Really what you would expect this time of year. Quite muddy in places. Staff very friendly and helpful. Bar serves good choice of food & a selection of beers eg Guinness, John Smiths, Strongbow & lager.
Pype Hayes
Pretty decent course, played better venues played worse. . . . Interesting course layout lacks a water feature and a driving range would be nice.
Excellent value for money and rate of play was excellent but it was a cold ( but dry ) Sunday so may have helped.
Would definitely play there again.
midday tee time
After a small mix up paying as the previous pro said it was cheaper to book direct rather than with golfnow - which doesnt seem to be the case now there was a slight wait on the 1st tee but in fairness by the time we started the 2nd there was no hold up at all. I thought the course was in great nick for a 'municipal' at this time of year and suprisingly dry. Greens in good condition too. Couple of temporary tees/ playing off ladies tees which is a shame as shortens some holes but will only be to protect main tees
OK
First 9 is short and a lot of par 4’s are drives then chips. 2nd 9 is a better test. Tee boxes not in great condition. A bit like putting a tee down in your local park. When not off grass the winter mats are tiny and difficult to get a tee into.
Greens OK for time of year.
Ground staff
Had to play off the red tees a couple of times due to the ground staff deciding to tidy up the yellow tees as we came to the tee and mowing around us whilst we were teeing off. Had people jumping on to holes in front of us from nowhere and slowing out game.
Nice to see this classic public course looking so good.
I played Pype Hayes many, many times as a lad. A visit several years ago was very disappointing but happy to say that the new regime is excellent. New clubhouse inc. café, bar and function room etc is wonderful. Staff were helpful and friendly.
The greens are back to near their very best and the fairways are lush. The SSS of 67 for a par of 71 is about right as the course has more shorter 4s than most, but it is still a good test of golf and there are some great holes - 4,8,11,12,13, 17 &18 are my favourites. Shame about the change to the original bunker on the 5th and they have altered the 9th green which was a classic, but on the whole very enjoyable.
The slow play issue will rumble on until someone with clout is out on the course regularly. I would appeal to ALL golfers to keep up with the game in front or let others through - its called etiquette - or courtesy/good manners. Please don't be an ignorant golfer.
very average
it was good value for the money we paid, but it was very very busy and painfully slow
Decent course but far too slow
Have played Pype Hayes a few times as I live close by, but was disappointed this time. Not sure if the people who jumped in front of us on the first were members or not, but they took our 2pm tee time and didn't go in to the shop to register. Saw a few people doing this and it overloads the course, leading to slow play.
The condition wasn't as good as on previous visits. The first tee was essentially 50% dust through wear and tear and the bunkers were in a very poor state. The rough was also too high - given this course attracts a lot of casual players who aren't accurate, deep rough not far from the fairway means a lot of time searching for balls, thus making the pace of play even slower.
Got round to the 5th and saw three groups waiting on the 8th tee, two more on the 11th tee and others waiting on every other tee box we could see. This hadn't improved once we got to the 9th, so we decided to end our game there than spend another 2.5 hours or more playing the back nine.
It's a shame. Pype Hayes is a good, mature golf course and a decent test for all abilities. The greens were pretty good (although a touch slow), but the place just isn't being managed very well. The slowness of play due to overloading the course and the rough being too deep may well have me looking for another venue when I fancy a change of scenery from the club at which I'm a member.
Nice Course
As often happens Teeofftimes says course free for most of the day. Not the case at all as very busy so slow at times.
