Let down
I have played Selsdon on numerous occasions when unable to play my club course. Like many Hotel courses it's condition varies a great deal. The course layout is, overall, very good, with some fine looking holes. Unfortunately on this occasion the fairways were poor, clearly not having been mown for some time, in addition some of the tee boxes and bunkers were also in need of some tlc.
To cap it off the hotel facilities for a coffee and breakfast were either closed or unattainable as they would not allow even summer soft pimple soles in the building.
So we left, hungry and feeling disappointed.
Autumn's claggy clay
Selsdon is a delightful course in the summer but once the autumn rains set in it becomes a chore. The clay topsoil does not drain well and carts begin to make unsightly impacts while those walking squelch their way around. I'll be back for sure, but in the drier weather in the Spring.
Sat golf
This place is always busy on a Saturday and most times I’ve played it’s very slow. Lots of non-regular golfer who don’t seem to have any idea of pace or keeping up with the people in front.
But I like the course and for £20 it’s very reasonable. I go knowing I could be in for a long round.
We only played 14 as the 4 ball in front we so slow (especially the one in orange!) we were having to wait every shot - we’d lost the will to live a little!
Great Track
Great layout and in fine condition very good value for money will be back
Sunny dsy
Course was in great condition the only thing that spoilt it for me was too many stones in the bunkers.
Really looking forward to playing there again.
Fun Layout, Let Down By The Greens
The course layout is good fun. Hilly, dog legs, gettable par 5s, bunker surrounded par 3s. Sadly the greens are really poor. Some are quick, some slow and they bobble all over the shop. Really let it down, probably wouldn't return because of that.
Ruined by the greens
I like this course but the experience is ruined by the greens. I fear they have groundstaff who do not know how to produce good greens. They are like putting on bobbly ice. Not only that but the flags are positioned on sloppy areas. where you can lag a putt to two feet then watch it roll off the green! Given the poor state of the greens putting is a lottery. The Tee boxes are also in dreadful condition with many uneven meaning you scramble to find a flat spot to tee off. Such a great course deserves to be kept better. If you don't care about putting then this is a good value course, if you do I would avoid for the moment.
Selsdon in poor condition
Mid April, Greens in very poor condition, tee boxes bowed and unkept . Sad to report obvious lack of grounds staff and a course in very poor condition . Tee boxes patchy and many serverely uneven , the Greens were extremely poor too . Many greens are elevated so have to come in high, however unwatered and hard ( even for this time of year ) so unable to hold green . Very poor maintaince and management . Much better value to be had elsewhere , avoid unless desperate . Sad state of affairs .
Spring has come to Selsdon
Course is looking very good. A few new buggy tracks created over the winter and the fairways have been artistically mown. Some of the greens still await post-treatment manicuring but I suspect that will all be completed this week. The course reamins challenging with its undulating fairways and elevated greens.
Nice layout shame about the upkeep
Greens had been spiked and were very bumpy. Felt we should have been told before booking. Tees and fairways were very shaggy. It’s a really nice course just not well maintained.
No hold ups
Haven't played this course for a few years but with the course guide helped navigate and show any hazards. Tee boxes were not in great shape some bare and some required cutting. Friendly staff in pro shop who explained that as i booked 2 ball on a Hot Deal ( online ) we would of been paired up with another 2 ball but they had managed to slot them in earlier. Only regret was not getting there earlier to go on range and also practice my putting which was the only weak part in my round .
nice course
great value for money,if you have not played it,you should give it a try...
Autumn comes early at Selsdon
This is a great course in the summer but it retains moisture and the wet weather last weekend has taken its toll. Nearly a week later it is still damp underfoot and all the ground has some"give". Greens have been treated so they are bobbly and very slow. Better conditions can still be found elsewhere. On the plus side the "digger" wasps have all gone - treated or died.
Fairways improving; digger wasps in most bunkers
Like many courses in the South East, Selsdon's fairways became crisp and brown in the dry months of July and August. Recovery is now well under way but there are still many brown patches. Digger (or sand) wasps were very evident in most bunkers. This is rather disconcerting and I was glad I was not wearing shorts. Apparently they sting rarely and the swarming evident should not last too long because it is the result of young hatching. Some guidance from the pro shop would have been a nice touch!
Slow play
2 old fellas in carts with their wives caused a 5 and half hour round ! This led to 2 three balls having to play together just to make life bearable. Delayed at least 10 players!
Drinks cart staff aware but didn’t do anything!
Excellent condition despite dry weather
As we haven't had any appreciable rain for nearly 6 weeks all courses are looking parched and Selsdon is no exception. However the Selsdon greens have been kept well and are still in fine condition.
