Stevenage Golf & Conference Centre - Bragbury Course

I’ve been a member at Stevenage Golf & Conference Centre for five years, and unfortunately the course is currently in by far the worst condition I’ve seen it during that time.

The changes to the course layout have, in my opinion, made things considerably worse. The area around holes 3, 4, 13 and 15 can feel like Piccadilly Circus, with three tee boxes very close together and golfers crossing and congregating in the same area. It feels unnecessarily congested and really affects the flow and enjoyment of a round.

The condition of the course is equally disappointing. The greens are poor, small and badly maintained, while many of the tee boxes are shocking — bare, uneven and in desperate need of attention. The bunkers are incredibly inconsistent: one can have loads of sand and stones in it, another virtually none, with everything in between.

Course management also seems to have deteriorated significantly. There appears to be little or no marshalling, and seeing groups of five or even six players isn’t unusual. Standards of golf-course etiquette and dress also seem to have largely disappeared, with football shirts and jogging bottoms now a common sight.

Having been a member for five years, I know the course can be much better than this. I’m not expecting championship-course conditions, but the current standard is well below what I believe paying members should reasonably expect.

It’s important to say that the bar staff and the staff in the pro shop are excellent — always friendly, welcoming and helpful. My criticism is very much about the condition, layout and management of the golf course rather than the people working in those areas.

It’s genuinely disappointing to see the course in this state after being a member for so long. I really hope significant improvements are made, because at present the golfing experience is very difficult to recommend

Having played here a few times previously, it was an obvious choice to book again. Whilst I appreciate the summer weather has been far from ideal for maintaining a golf course, there are still some issues that could and should have been addressed.

Change of layout to the course - whilst I quite like the changes would have been nice to have been told on arrival or prior to leaving the pro shop instead of wandering over to the old first hole and wondering what had happened.

Overall for £35 a round was left a little disappointed, I have no doubt in time the improvements and changes will take effect but currently it’s not what it used to be

I hadn't played this course for a number of years due to the fact that they used to push through too many players at short intervals to get maximum green fees, causing backlogs on the course.

That appears to have changed slightly.

However, there is a section where 3 tees are currently being repsired and as such there are temp tees almost all of which are on top of each other. There are other areas being worked on aswell causing additional temp tees.

It's generally a bit of a mess at the moment and this should, in my opinion, be reflected in reduced green fees.

Course off the tee boxes was good, conditions was good. Greens are a bit scratchy. The tee boxes are terrible, no level lie so you either have the ball above or below your feet. Looks like they are building a few new ones, but the ones they have need to be addressed as they really let the course down. Some interesting holes and the layout is quite good. Make sure you have enough drink, no places to find water out on the course.

Excellent over all, but there are 2 problems. The bunkers have hardly any sand in and are rock hard. They should be classed as GUR. And all the tee boxes are atrocious atm. No grass and every one of them has a ridge of ground through the middle and all are not level. Every where you stand your at an angle. Fix these and it will be a great course.

They’ve changed the layout since I last played it and it just doesn’t play as well. The 9th takes you away from the clubhouse which feels wrong. They haven’t completed work to some tee boxes and some holes feel like you’re crossing over with other holes. Don’t think they should be charging full price at the minute.

The changes to the course seem good once all the work is finished. The greens need so work, but overall great experience

Was my first time playing here, if it wasn’t for the fact my garmin watch didn’t work with the new layout it would have been a better experience as well as ongoing work to tee boxes and the course in general. I would say in a few months time as it grows back in it will be even better. Will go back in a few months to see.

I played in April and it’s still in really poor condition. I guess you get what you pay for but this could be a great course if someone actually invested a bit of money.

Some of green closed off and the placement of replacements holes were not going

A number of holes the green was not in use and the hole was put in the middle of the fairway where you can’t really use a putter. I understand it’s winter and maybe there’s repairs, but the golf course should have made that known. Paying full price with a number of greens not in use is slightly poor in my opinion

First time playing here. Course in great condition apart from tee boxes which weren’t very flat and seemed to have a hump going down the length of them. Rest of the course was great and well looked after. Had a great day here and will be returning.

Overall a nice course, but tee boxes were basically sand and need a lot of TLC. Fairways were average. Greens were good.

I like the course greens in excellent condition due to all the rain lately as the fairways as well. Main issue for me was slow play , and maybe a little pricey for a public course which seems to have gone up quite a lot in the last year or so.

Good layout, with some interesting holes. Only down side was the state of the tee blocks, really let’s the course down. Very few seem flat, level never mind the divots. Greens were well looked after though.
