Disappointed
Course was deserted and we soon discovered why.
Course has a great layout but needs a considerable amount of work to bring back to a playable standard.
Fairways are reasonable, greens and tees are appalling and in need of proper maintenance.
Clubhouse feels a bit tired no one in the pro shop and bar staff turned up eventually.
Not worth the £33 pp ‘hot deal’ that we paid and wouldn’t return or recommend.
Wiltshire golf lakes course
Challenging golf round with some very tricky holes and greens.
Recovering quickly after the recent drought conditions
Absolute joke of a course. Scamworthy.
Me and a friend paid £40 each to play during Winter when there was some rain but not much for a little while - it was around March time. We'd both traveled a fair while to get to the course, it was well out of the way for both of us.
Anyways, we turned up to the course with no prior notice of course condition or anything, even when we checked in there was no mention so we thought ok great. How wrong I was to think that...it was honestly the worst I'd ever seen when we got onto the course. The first tee box was an absolute mud bath, not a blade of grass in sight, from there it just got worse. Huge puddles of water on the fairways, balls getting plugged on the fairways and lost, it was better to play from the rough (which suits my game).
Anyways, a few holes in we decided to call it, went back to the clubhouse, and told them it was just unplayable and certainly not something you'd expect for £40. I was given the contact for the GM who was just an absolute delight to talk to. Here's how the convo went:
'The course was unplayable, we had to to stop a few holes in.' To which the GM reply was 'If the course was unplayable then our greenskeeper would have deemed it so and we would have closed the course.'
This GM had also on the phone he wasn't a golfer and had no idea what was deemed as playable.
I was completely stunned by this response. I explained to the GM that we were from some time away and we wouldn't plan to be back that way, to which his response was ok there's nothing I can help you with.
Imagine a business not offering you services that you as a customer have rightfully paid for and then keeping your money.
As far as customer service goes this was also the worst I've ever experienced, probably anywhere. Complete shambles. Scamworthy.
A word of advice, unless you want absolutely awful course conditions and completely terrible customer service go and find somewhere else to spend your hard-earned money to enjoy golf.
Not worth the price
Potential could be a great course but unfortunately it's being neglected.
Way over priced,
Very poor condition, doesn't worth half of the price for the round
Great Day out with Friends, hope to return soon. Thank you
Upon arriving at The Wiltshire I was greeted in the main reception by a helpful young gentleman putting me in the director of the head pro who make check in simple and off we went on our round. Luckily the weather was great and after completing the first couple of holes and ventured out on the 4th the mass amounts of countryside was quite the spectacle. After finishing the round we headed to the bar and albeit it a little quiet could see had just gone under refurbishment. Other aspects require a little attention but overall a great day out and will hope to return again one day.
Wednesday 8th June
On arrival, no food available at all - so we left for a cafe a couple of miles away. Upon return no one was available to meet us in reception. Pro shop non existent as far as I could tell. So we just went to the first tee and played. The course itself is pretty good, the greens run true and well.. half way up the first a man in a buggy chased after us and asked us to wear a band on our wrists…. Never did this this once he had gone, as they were annoying when swinging a golf club. Course is worth playing, bunkers were poor with very gritty, thin levels of sand. We left straight after as the round took 4 1/2 hours for a 3 ball - we followed a society that had no thought of letting anyone through. Fortunately the sun was out, but otherwise we may have walked off earlier. Shame really, no atmosphere and no welcome in the building spoilt this trip out.
Not a £35 course
No proshop just hotel check in desk so make sure your stocked up before you arrive.
£20 - £25 course chrging over the top as its a hotel. Needs a lot of tlc on course. Tee boxes not cut well, greens very patchy and slow. Go a foot off the fairway and your in your pocket for a new ball, bunkers terrible, hard sand with a lot of stone chips in them. Though some good holes with a decent scoring chance.
Terrible Members
Today I played a round at The lakes. The course itself isnt bad. The fairways are good and greens are ok. I understand keeping a course like this is hard work and the staff do a good job. I was on my round with a friend and saw three gents push from finishing the 4th hole to the 8th. I was coming off the 7th and onto the 8th. I persumed they would give way as I was a two ball and they were a three, Elderly and slow. They were the rudest members I have ever met, one in particular swearing, Threatening and lying saying they hadnt cut the course and they they were in a competetion. Clearly that member believes he is he only ones that can enjoy a round of golf. Avoid the course. Maybe the member in questions should re-read the code of ethics and not be a digrace and an embarassment to the club. I wont be going back. Dont waste your money going here. There are plenty of courses in Wiltshire. Avoid this one.
Good fun
Lots of interesting holes. Course layout is excellent.
Driving range is in a poor condition as are the practice nets. Overall, could be a top quality golf experience with a like more effort.
Terrible. Avoid.
Course shouldn’t have been open, ground was so wet we lost balls of the tee from shots that hit the fairway. Greens slow, fairways boggy and sloppy. Tees poorly maintained, muddy. £30 was a rip off.
Happy golfing
Seeming we played the course in January, I was surprised how good the course was., understandable it was damp, and summer conditions would be better, but I would highly recommend to all.
Interesting holes,good layout,and pleasant staff.
Should be closed!!!
Booked 18 holes and paid full price to find out on arrival that holes 5,6,7,8 and 9 were closed!
I understand in winter it’s hard for golf clubs to keep the courses going but we couldn’t even walk on the fairways it was so boggy.
It’ll take months to repair the damage being made out there today.
It’s such a shame as I love playing this course and the layout itself is bang on! But how they can charge golfers and allow them to play on that is mind blowing!
Just terrible
Hospitality was terrible- owner was at reception and was about as rude as he could get away with being.
Course was obviously once great, but a shadow of its former self. Badly looked after, boggy and in terrible condition when compared to other local courses.
Members complained about mismanagement, rudeness and escalating cost.
Paid £25 for a round and felt short changed.
Tatty
Lovely layout, needs a lot of attention. Greens ok, fairways too long, miss the fairway by a few rolls and risk losing a ball. Driving range out of order, Garden course in awful condition. Shame.
Course needs some love!
Plenty of potential at this course, and I understand management has recently changed hands. It feels like they are missing a head green keeper of perhaps they are very short staffed but maintenance around the course is lacking. Tee areas need cutting and markers require moving, litter bins need to be emptied and the rough and fairway fringes need some more consistent attention. There are sone really nice holes to play here, but the experience needs to be improved for the course to shine as it should. I’ll be back but in a year to see what’s changed..
A good challenge
The course was in good condition although some greens looked tired. Pace of play was good with the course being relatively quiet after Noon. I thought it was worth the price paid and I would go back again.
Course Gone Downhill
I played this course a few years ago when it was under different management and it was pretty good, certainly equal to any of the other clubs in the area. It is less than two miles from my house, therefore it made sense to play here when we were struggling for a tee time for a late notice game on a Friday evening. I must say the first impressions were not great. It was 5:15pm and there was no one in the Pro Shop or anyone at the Hotel reception area, therefore as it was close to the tee time we'd paid for online, we just went ahead and teed off. From then on the experience just got worse. The course seemed unkempt, the 'Hole Maps' were faded and in some cases unreadable, the teeing areas were uneven and worn and the fairways were like the first cut of rough, in fact my playing partner just missed the fairway to the left and couldn't find his ball in the first cut. The Greens were patchy, the bunkers were more gravel than sand and the water area fringes were overgrown. It is such a shame this course has been allowed to deteriorate like this as it is Peter Allis designed and could be really good if looked after well. We left feeling disappointed and probably wouldn't play here again as there are Golf Courses in the area that are much better value for money.
