Slow play with four balls ahaed

Thetford is a pretty golf course with excellent greens and a nice clubhouse with good food BUT it is a four ball course so if you are a two ball beware - the booking system makes no differentiation. Yesterday we played behind a chronically slow 4 ball (we waited on every shot) who either had no idea of etiquette or were just bad mannered. In the end we skipped holes 9 and 10 to overtake them (They had 4 clear holes ahead) Having paid £120 this is not good enough. Had the system let us play in front of the 4 ball it would have been fine. Many courses have 4 balls in the afternoon and twos in the morning or vice versa. Maybe they can't be bothered as Thetford is always busy. Also it is a winter course, the fairways never get muddy which is great but the downside is that in dry weather they suffer and they are not allowed to irrigate. Yesterday all the fairways had been slitted which was no doubt necessary but not ideal to play on. £120 is a lot of money for two people to play especially as there are quite a few courses nearby (Swaffham for example) which are just as good and half the money.

Super setting

The weather had been dry for a week or two so the heathland type fairways were very firm and the ball ran a long way - made me feel like a long hitter. On the down side the ball did run off on a number of occasions because of this! The greens were perfect. Also a wide variety of wildlife - very pretty.

Wide, tree-lined fairways

Played here on a sunny afternoon and really enjoyed the course. The nets and pitch and putt facilities are close to the first hole and are a great way to warm up. On the course you need to steer clear of the fairway bunkers, which is a good challenge. The lovely wide fairways are very inviting and the greens are very nice.

Golden Oldies

I joined Thetford in 1978, since then a compulsory purchase order of some of the front nine holes to build a by-pass forced new holes to be built into Thetford forest, which have been a success.

Twenty years ago we moved to the Kent coast and rarely play Thetford now, however I played today while visiting family. The autumn weather hasn't affected the greens, fairways or tees yet and we also spotted the odd pheasant and deer on the course today.

The only problem was the slow play which could be improved if it was marshalled properly, however, it was overall an enjoyable day, followed up by a pint in the pleasant club bar.
