My new favourite course
Well to start with only 12 holes were open but as the course open I received a call from Kerry letting me know the status of the course Thank you a very nice touch. Course was in winter mode and although on winter greens still totally enjoyed my round. Great lay out and can’t wait to come back and try all 18 holes out. My new favourite course.
Friendly Pretty Course
Beautiful setting for clubhouse, which has its own 12C moat.
Bar staff stayed open so I could wait for my lift, which was great.
Members sped round so pace of play was excellent.
Definitely recommend if in the area.
Great course....however
1st time playing the course. Wonderful layout, and challenging course. The only thing letting it down was the current state of the greens, which is unfortunate, but I know the club is working hard to resolve the issues. Will definitely return when greens are in better shape
Wigan Golf Club (Avoid for the moment)
I hate to do this but after back and forth with the club and having our complaints dismissed I feel I have no choice.
I arranged a fixture for our golf society and recently took 20 people at £40 each on a golf only package. Communication from the office staff was excellent in the lead up to the day but at no point did they mention the state of the course.
Unfortunately the greens are diseased beyond acceptable levels and whilst the course is still playable its not worth anywhere near the £40 per person price point. We tried to raise the issue on the day but there was nobody at the club who would speak with us, we have then had conversations with the club where they have denied there are other bad reviews and have said that memebers are still shooting good scores on the course. I will say that I have been taking societies to Wigan GC since 2017 and this is only the 2nd time I have had issues with them but it will be the last time I take a society there. They really need to look at their customer service levels and advise other societies spending £800+ that the course may not be up to standards .
Facilities
No pro shop, no food or toilet available. Poor signage.
Tight course. Beautiful location. Some early greens not great.
I did however really enjoy it.
Dry weather causing problems
Group of 30.
Staff excellent.
Course suffering from long spell of dry weather.
Greens appalling, fairways bone dry.
Shame as course layout good.
Check this out before booking!
A lovely friendly club with a warm welcome. However, the course is compact and there is waiting to tee off over a couple of greens and fairways. The greens on the back nine were in much better condition than the front. The back nine was more interesting however, as a 5 handicapper I was disappointed that you could stop nothing on the greens. I appreciate there has been little rain but with every tee brown as can be something else has obviously happened which no-one told us about. At £62.00 for two of us we will not be returning I am afraid.
The greens were in very poor condition, and hand random cuts of turf put in. Very long. Appreciate it’s coming off winter but they were no good at all and didn’t look they would be good at any point. The rest of the course was ok some confusing holes with random fair way cross over points. Very picturesque though. The staff were lovely though and so were the members we came across. But I wouldn’t rerun in its current condition
Many greens saturated and virtually unplayable
We returned to the course having played a week before and having thoroughly enjoyed the previous round 7 days earlier on what is a very decent course in a lovely rural setting..
Unfortunately on this occasion we found the course to be very, very wet...which is broadly acceptable given local weather conditions leading up to our round...what wasn't acceptable though is the condition of many of the greens many of which had huge puddles making these holes virtually unplayable. I estimate that at least 7 greens were badly affected. Puddles on the fairway also meant that many balls plugged in the water without bouncing further hence shortening driving range on occasions.
This wasn't of course pointed out to us pre round when we checked in and later when we returned at circa 4.30pm to voice our concerns the clubhouse was locked shut so no one to complain to 😒
The course is generally excellent, challenging but fair however the state of the greens and some fairways ruined our day...worst still I had travelled 40 plus miles to play my nephew who had also travelled 40 minutes to meet at what was a generally equidistant location.
Very disappointing all in all.
Great course at a more than fair midweek price....Course challenging but fair and played well despite constant light drizzle. Very scenic parkland course setting and well maintained 👍
Has great potential
Start of August after a few weeks of good weather and the course still has sand and holes all over the green. Rough was still very thick.
Potential to be a great course if it’s kept better
Great layout
Good challenge with a range of holes. Original holes on front 9 are more pleasing to play but a great challenge for all levels of golfer. Still soft enough under foot but credit to course staff for definition in fairways and evenness of rough.
Staff are fantastic
Really nice experience playing Wigan this past week. Staff are fantastic as are the members. I arrived early and the whole team were really accommodating. I was treated like a member in the club house and everyone was really friendly. The course is as I expected struggling with the weather but overall fine. Fun to play pace of play ruined it slightly.
