Great golf day
One of my best day of golf on this course. A little foggy in the morning but it played out to be beautiful day.
Update
Made the mistake of playing Sunday after Thanksgiving. The course was packed due to several factors; frost delay, holiday play, weekend play, and an RV stay and play special.
The round took over five and a half hours and an 1130 tee time barely allowed us to finish before dark. IDK if this was preventable or not, but the multitude of FIVE and SIX person groups did not help.
The course was in typical winter conditions and the greens were fantastic as usual. Even the bunkers seemed to have started to be worked on.
An excellent day of golf
A beautiful golf course. It is both challenging and somewhat forgiving. The concept of risk and reward exists all over the course, especially on 18. I will definitely be back to play here again.
course in good condition
the course was in great shape , considering ca. drought.
EXCELLENT CONDITION AND VALUE
PHEASANT RUN IS ALWAYS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, CONSIDERING THE DROUGHT CONDITIONS OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS. EXCELLENT GREENS, BUT VERY LITTLE SAND IN THE BUNKERS MAKE SAND PLAY DIFFICULT. A VERY NICE FACILITY AND EXPERIENCE OVERALL.
Good long hitting course.
This course is great if you enjoy pulling the driver out and giving it a good smack. The greens are in great condition. You get punished a bit of you go off the fairway because your hitting your shot of dusty bare hard pan, but i guess that's to be expected in August. The only major downfall is the bunkers, there is very little sand and with the sprinkling system it has turned it into clay. Also the grounds crew could trim up the palm trees scattered around the course, they haven't been touched in years.
Water
If you have water containers on the golf course they should all be full on hot weather days! Yesterday in the upper 90's to 100's and none of the water machines had any water.
Beast from the blacks
The blacks and even the blues offer an excellent stern test of golf, but there are tees available that make it an enjoyable round for every level.
There is a previous review with additional info. Greens are in fantastic shape. Rest of course is in good condition with the usual thin/brown drought areas. I really really want to give this course four stars, BUT (and IDK why) they can not figure out how to get the bunkers into good shape. Yes there is a lot of wind that blows away sand but even breaking up the dirt into soft playable conditions would be an improvement over the current conditions.
Good place to play
Only 45 minutes from home and worth the drive. Course had some wet spots but was very playable. Light breeze on a hot day helped make play bearable. We will defenatly go back.
Bunkers are terrible
I've played this course several time over the past ten years or so. It's not may favorite course but it does have a nice layout.
Three big gripes however really stand out.
Checking in was easy and fast. Because we were early we went to the clubhouse to get a bite to eat. Big mistake. The bar and eating are is one and the same. No big deal, most courses are like this. But I think they forgot this is a golf course. Whereas most courses have a tv or two usually showing golf or another sport this one also had blaring, way too loud, urban "music" playing. It made me wonder who they're playing it for since 90% of the people in the bar were 30+ in age. It was too loud for us to talk without shouting so we sat outside to eat.
Continuing my beef about the bar, the service was terrible after the round when we tried to get a drink. We could not get service. The bartender saw us and said she'd be right with us, but she was way to involved with two customers and processessing credit cards. C'mon, we just finished around and needed a drin and cool down! We left and heard others outside complaining about the "rude and terrible service." I commented that I don't care to play this course again and they all agreed with me.
Now about the course itself... The bunkers are among the worse I've ever played. Sand? Non-existent! It was more clay and mud than sand. No need to rake because spikes don't leave marks. Really if you're excellent at hitting off hardpan then you'll love hitting out of these bunkers.
I don't recommend playing Pheasant Run. Go to Ridge Creek in Dinuba or Riverside in Fresno or Pacific Grove Muni in Pacific Grove for much better courses, clubhouses displaying golf etiquette and friendly staff.
Great place to play
Everything in their photos represents the facility. The course, pro shop, restaurant, driving range and staff.
The only thing I beg of you guys at PR is to check the water jugs on the course. Not one had water on the course. Some ice, BUT NO WATER. We saw the marshal once and had thought he would be the one to check, but whoever it is, please get it corrected.
Excellent Greens
Pheasant Run is an outstanding course and is as well maintained as any country club I've golfed at. Smooth and fast greens. It's a long and challenging course.
Not easy
although the course is pretty flat, it is long with many par 4's longer than 400 yds. Conditions are great but it is challenging to say the least.
Nice Course
Very nice course overall. My only complaint was that the fairways were saturated with standing water in spots and several areas that wet enough to soak your shoes. Seemed odd considering the drought, even though it had rained heavily 2 days before. Greens were very nice and the layout of holes was great with a good variety of challenge level and variance of design. I will be back.
We will be back... With golf clubs
We usually golf around the Modesto area, and this is our first time playing here, and we will definitely be back again. The only problem was with the staff, as we had an 11:30 tee time booked, but the person at the front desk in the pro shop somehow changed our tee time that we booked to 11:52, and also wasn't announcing who should be up on the tee, so we left after a group of 2 who also had an 11:30 tee time. Other than that, we had a great time playing all 18, and I only lost 2 balls, one to a palm tree, and one to a water hazard. On 18, another palm tree saved me from the water which surrounds the green.
Duck duck Goose
Staff was absolutely great. Extremely friendly and helpful. My playing partner locked his keys in his truck so he was 45 mins late. They accommodated a new tee time for us without any hesitation.
Course is in great shape from tee to green. EXCEPT the sand traps which range from terrible to atroshish. That is my only complaint with the course. Greens rolled true and the course has plenty of water hazards stocked with ducks and geese.
There's no grass between fairways so you have to hit off dirt if you miss the fairway. This saves precious water which I'm OK with. Plus they seem to maintain the dirt and the times I had to hit from it, I didn't really have a problem.
Fun morning at the course with boy!
Pheasant Run Golf Course has the perfect setting for your foursome, even if all four players have different levels of ability. The Championship set of tees will test the most skilled players, and the forward set of tees is great for the first time player or someone that hits a super short ball. Plenty of water hazards keeps pace of play moving, you never search for your ball as turf conditions were perfect and greens were rolling plenty fast, smooth and fair. The best part was my 4 year old son is still talking about going back to the course for more fun. Eric Costa and staff do a great job.
Pheasant run
course in great condition, only down side is pace of play if really slow due to beginner and elderly golfers
This course as a Pheasant Run PLEASURE!
A+ in every way! Greens quite challenging especially
with the surrounding water hazard!
Great Course
This course is fun and very well manicured! I love it!
