Not great, but not bad
This was my first trip to the Whitney Farms GC and I won't be back. I won't be back bc of the distance from my home (1.75hrs) and although it is a decent course, it is not remarkable.
I read the reviews of the course on the site and decided to make the trip. The course as you pull in looks like any course you have been to. The staff was awesome as I called about an hour before I arrived because my gps said I had 1 hour left on my ride and my tee time was in exactly 1hr. Asked to be moved back and Billy the pro said no problem.
I was paired with a great guy who is a regular and he talked me through every angle of the course. The shining star of this golf course are their greens. They are in excellent shape and were above average speed and ran true. Really great undulations and deceptive reads galore. However, the fairways and tees were average at best. The layout is nothing special and many holes are not inspiring at all. The course can be tight on many holes with OB running on both sides. Add in the hard fairways and drives that landed on the edge of the fairway ended up OB was frustrating to say the least. Bunkers were well kept and sand was soft.
Overall, if I lived much much closer I would be back, but for a "destination" course, this is not one of them for me.
5 hour round with no ranger is unacceptable
A late Sunday afternoon round that took 5 hours. The only time we saw a ranger was on the 18th hole when were standing on the tee waiting for the groups in front of us and were told that we had 10 minutes to get the carts back to the clubhouse. It was hot and every one of the water stations were empty. Nice course but very poorly managed.
great course
challenging and fun definitely play again
only one small critique...
Played there again for the first time in years, still a friendly, nice layout, with some challenging holes.
Only downer was no flagstick indication of front/middle/back of greens - all flags were identical, so that threw us off by 10-20 yds when blind or unfamiliar with the course.
Overall, very good
Overall the course was in good shape. Seems to be some greens issues on at least three holes. The staff was excellent both in the shop and on the course. Very, Very, courteous. Certainly would play there again.
Good overall experience
Tee boxes and fairways are in very good shape. Greens are OK but needed to be rolled, sand traps need work poor sand with pebbles common and some small stones
The greens
The green's were fast even though it was raining.
Course condition impressive
First time played and enjoyed the course very much. Impress with fairways and greens. Played several courses in same area and we're not comparable. Looking forward to playing here again. Keep up the good work.
Hidden Gem
First time playing. Pleasantly surprised. Nice layout. Walkable!!
Great course
First time playing this course. Had a great time. Course is long and had alot of different hole lay outs. Best part was the elevated par 3's, those have always been a favorite of mine. The course is somewhat hard and at times requires some precise shots. The only down side was the fairways and greens were a little burnt and as a result greens were very quick. Overall great course with a variety of different holes.
Disappointing
I hadn't played here in several years. My memory of the last round was a course in great condition. This time, not so much. Greens are in very sad condition, despite being recently aerated. Honestly, they looked and played like they need to be shut down for a week or 2 to recover. (LOTS of water needed). It has been dry in CT the last week or 2, but isn't that why golf courses have sprinklers? The entire course was dry as a bone. But the worst conditions i found were in the bunkers. I found a few along the way (OK, so I'm no Dustin Johnson!). None were any good, and the greenside bunker on 18 nearly broke my wrist! I took my swing, hit the "sand" about 2 inches behind my ball, and the club bounced off the hardpan that was hiding less than an inch deep! Whitney Farms advertises a "country club feeling", but I have played plenty of muni's that were in far better shape.
Great layout. Bad greens conditions.
Golf course is a nice layout with challenging greens. Unfortunately, conditions of the greens were fair to bad. Several of the greens on the back nine were aerated and top dressed with sand. In June!!!?? If the greens were good to excellent the course would be packed daily. Need a new greens-keeper.
First time playing Whitey Farms
This was my first time playing Whitney Farms.
Really enjoyed the course and plan to play there again. The layout was unusual with three par 5s and three par 3s on the front and three par 5s on the the back. Conditions were excellent.
Good Ol' Whitney
Despite heavy rains on Sunday 6/5 the course was in good shape overall... except for most of the bunkers. Layout at Whitney is always a challenge, actually I think it is one of the best around. New Head Pro is far more friendly promoting excellent customer service than past 'dinosaur'... The one item that Whitney still needs, a good practice putting green. But then there is Tashua down the road a bit... excellent practice facility. Combine the two and WOW! It would almost like being at home which is TPC Sawgrass.
Better
Great value, like this place more and more each time I play. Got off as an early single, finished 18 in 2 hrs.
Greens aerated
Gave a lower rating because the greens were aerated
Some tee boxes need work
Main fairways in excellent shape
Still early in the year
Great Public Course
Really enjoy playing at Whitney Farms on Saturdays and whenever else I can get out there.
As public course go, it's in the best shape of any in Fairfield county. Very challenging to golfers of all levels and a beautiful place for couples golf or any type of outing from a twosome to a 200 person tournament.
New to golfnow.com, it's still an undiscovered gem. I'd definitely recommend checking it out- and bring your A game.
Great course
Somewhat difficult course but very fair. I have played here multiple times and the course is always in great shape. Only negative is that I would like to be able to practice on a bigger and more realistic practice green. I would and have recommended this course to friends
Challenging course
Nice course. Very challenging if not a long ball hitter. Will probably be in better shape further into the Spring an Summer. Will definitely play again.
RUDE and UNPLEASANT STAFF
The course charged full price for NO GOLD FORWARD TEES, they had been removed and when I asked about it, I was told that I should have looked at the 1st tee box!
Charging FULL greens fees and no ball washers or water at any hole!
WOMEN, DO NOT PLAY at Whitney Farms! They have no interest in us playing there!
