SHOCKED
I’ve always heard good things about this course, but other courses in the area have a little more clout for whatever reason. This course was unbelievable. I paid $24. Included cart. Greens in unbelievable shape. Tees for everyone. So much course management, they layout would be 10 stars if I could give it. I almost don’t feel right writing all this because I want to keep it for myself. Kudos to Spencer T Olin. That’s how you operate a public golf course.
Course Mostly In Good Shape, Administrative/Service Issues Persist
First of all, a senior weekday day rate of $38 on this quality of golf course - cannot be beat in the St. louis Metro area. The greens were perfect and on the quick side. Some tees and fairways are already having some issues. Looks like from standing water, it has killed some grass. The number 1 tee and fairway had the most issues. The starter was extrememly nice and actually thanked us for playing at Spencer T. Olin. A rarity.
The administrative/service issues I have with the course are as follows. They charge you $9.96 for making a tee time on-line. Makes no sense to do this as this allows the pro shop to take payments instead of answering the phone. The also charge you for using a credit card. Just add that to the cost of business. Very disorganize at the snack bar. At times no one was there and and the computer and payment process is too slow. They are having to use the mouse instead of a touch screen for the ordering process. Also, found no one at the pro shop desk in the afternoon. They even charge you $1.50 for refills on fountain soda.
Great course!
First time playing here. Love the Arnold P design! Course was in almost great condition. Only issue some Tee boxes were rough but other than that was great! Will be back!!
Marshal ruined play
Got to the six hole and the marshal said we need to pick it up. The group behind us was no where in sight, and we ended finishing 9 holes in 2:15 mins. He was with us every time we turned around until I told him to back off on the 9th hole. He said to call the pro shop with the biggest smirk on his face like he was proud to ruin my experience out there. Because they had a tournament, I guess they felt they needed to run the others off the course. Totally uncalled for, marshal Mike was a complete jerk. The course wasn’t in the best shape; fairways where brown, greens had some sort or oil/ hydraulic fluid all over. Layout is cool, but with the marshal on you to rush, ruins the price you pay to relax and have fun on these courses.
Good Track
I love this course. Always in great condition and have good rates. Little bit of a drive to get there but ST Olin’s worth it.
Great day at the course!
Always a great round here at Spencer T! For a busy day the pace of play was outstanding. Course was in great shape as well. Easily the best place to play for your money’s worth.
Always a good time
Love playing this course. Even in the winter months the course is always well maintained.
Carts On Path In Off-Season, Extremely Slow Play
My friend made the tee time at Spencer T. Olin because he was told they allow carts in the fairways when it is dry. When we arrived, we found out that Spencer T. Olin is another course not allowing carts in the fairway when the zoysia grass is dormant. We would have played somewhere else if accurate info would have been given to my friend.
More courses are doing this. Courses can do what they want. However, they will lose business in the off-season and you can expect extremely long rounds. Our round was 5 1/2 hours. Totally unacceptable and no ranger found on the course.
Spencer T. Olin is one of my favorite courses in the Metro St. Louis area, however, not on my list with the cart path rule and no ranger to stop the 5 1/2 hour rounds in the off-season. Play Gateway, Far Oaks or Annbrair, who allow carts in fairways in the off-season.
I thought the course was in excellent shape for late February. Greens were really good. The price of $35
was attractive. What is unusual about the course in the off-season, they only have one tee marker on each tee. Not sure what the reason is behind this.
