West at White Pines Golf Course
About
Situated just 30 minutes from downtown Chicago, White Pines Golf Club has been a popular spot for both locals and visitors. The club offers two courses, the East and the West. The West Course is longer than the East by 400 yards and considered slightly more challenging. The layout is relatively tight and there is an abundance of trees, which means you'll need to be accurate to do well. The greens are large and challenging with difficult-to-read breaks. There is also minimal, but strategic bunkering along the greensides. The fairways provide plenty of variety with some that are narrow and heavily tree-lined and others that are wide with no trees in sight. The golf course has several challenging holes but it's forgiving enough for beginners to approach with confidence.

East Course is fabulous
1st time playing the east course and it was a treat. Challenging yet satisfying.
Terrible bunkers
I'm usually a good bunker player, but I just can't hit a decent shot out of there sand bunkers. They have just a sprinkle of sand on top or some hard dry dirt. You just can't get under the ball, and there's no way to get sand behind the ball. I found it's easier to catch the ball clean and softly chip it out. Good Luck if you hit in one.
Others have vastly over rated all 36 holes - 2.5 stars
White Pines (both West and East) are value plays. Tree over planting would be an understatement here. Greens are pockmarked and generally are slowish and overall conditioning is just fair. We played on a cool cloudy day so it wasn't all that crowded - but when it is a full course pace of play here is usually a 5 hour turtle crawl - especially if you get behind foursomes of members who think they own the place some weekday mornings. The West course has several long Par 5's and plays a longish 6300 yards plus. East course is shorter but ridiculously tree lined in places - straying off any fairway you're likely punching out ala Club Pro Guy. Thankfully windstorms have blown down a lot of trees on a couple of the West course holes.....but not enough on far too many holes. You can be 10 feet off the fairway and still have tree troubles. Both courses are $35 values at best. Fairly decent facilities...driving range off mats and halfway house, etc but that just doesn't make up for the lackluster overall conditioning and a lot of holes that all look the same - where the lack of trees tell you where to go.....
Bad Shape
The course was in BAD shape. Greens were fuzzy, not cut on a Sunday, SUPER slow. Divot marks all over. The bunkers are dirt, not sand, and the tee boxes and fairways are long.
You shouldn’t have to worry about getting grass between club and ball when teeing up a par 3, but it is true. All of the boxes were terribly long.
Course is charging too much at $59 for the shape it is in.
Solid
Chose a course that was near the hotel. Played the West and I was pleasantly surprised. Starter let me know about some of the tee boxes being eaten up but it was no problem. The course was in great shape. Greens were rolling fairways were true. Now it’s on to the East course
Terrible bunkers
As I indicated with the title, the sand bunkers have no sand in them and very dry, very hard to get the club under the ball without hitting the ball. They also decided to put sand on the greens, I know they do this every year but there was alot. I would of liked a heads up. Ive noticed this year they aren't keeping the coarse as well as they used to. The tee boxes extremly dry, broke 4 tees trying to t up.
Don’t Bother
Trash everywhere. Chewed up tee boxes. Half dead greens. Don’t let the nice practice greens fool you. The greens at this place are awful. Tee boxes are bad. Bunkers not raked. Garbage all over the course. Embarrassing. Don’t bother. Star away!
This course is good for all levels
We were allowed to have individual carts which is good given the virus uptick. Pace was slow, had to wait on every hole. Course was in great condition but players behind us were anxious & hit down on us a few times when it was obvious that we couldn’t play faster due to over crowding ahead of us. Otherwise a good round.
Easy and fun for the price.
Pretty straight wide open course. Greens a very easy to read, they’re all straight. The sand traps are concrete with a little sand sprinkled on top. But $40 for 18 and $60 for 36 can’t really beat it.
Beautiful Dick Nugent course
Good course played back tee with one of 191 yard par 3 hole reduce to white tee for variation distances.
and the last hole played white tee still over 400 yard challenge with 30 yard LW.
putting not hard which I got a 31 putts (best of my year)
