Bacon Park's greens were still recovering in August 2018, but they have plenty of interesting contours. This is the 15th. Photo submitted by TimGavrichGP on 11/07/2018
Great for the price!
I've played this course several times as it consistently pops up on Hot Deals!, The course is owned by the city of Savannah but run by a private company. The course is pretty fun and open so it's good for beginners, it is in need of some revamping especially on some of the greens but Everytime I've been there is always course work being done so it looks like they are taking care of it. Overall great course for beginners or groups looking for cheap good golf rounds.
Bacon Park
Golf shop personnel is very friendly and engaging. The course is a wonderful Donald Ross layout. The only negative is that the course is not in the best shape due to years of neglect. Some low areas get excessively muddy due to poor drainage, and in some cases the fairways are more dirt than grass. Tee boxes and greens need lots of work but may get better during the summer when the bermudagrass comes back. If this course were given the attention it deserves, it would be a gem.
County Park Course
Course is in fair condition. Greens are spotty, but smooth and fast. Overall from tees to greens this course needs LOTS of work. Being managed by a company that also has car dealerships...hmmmmm . If you go on GolfNow, you can get a tee time for about $22 with all fees included. Believe me, that is all this tract is worth at the most. Also with leagues most mornings and locals having Blitz Golf rounds you probably would be smart to avoid all the morning tee times. Excruciating slow pace of play at most times I have played the last 3 rounds. Vacationing here and will not even consider this course on future visits. There are Much better courses for only a few dollars more. Sosad, because the layout is really good, but obviously someone doesn't want to invest the money to make it a course that could be so much more. I would NOT recommend and would advise to seek tee times somewhere else.
Sad old and tired
I guess I wasn’t expecting much based on other reviews and the price but the reality is this is not worth wasting your time total hardpan and bare fairways greens were spotty at best traps needed attention at least the carts were new
Great course Tough greens
Great course layout, with moderate fairway conditions. Greens were pretty good condition and very fast with lots of undulations. Tough for first timer, but that just makes me want to go back all the more. Leagues most mornings, so after 10:30-ish are best tee times to get.
Can't wait for next time.
A Donald Ross Gem
While Bacon Park is a mini and not in pristine condition, it is another example of Ross’s genius. It is fun to play for any caliber of player; lots of room off the tee, room to run the ball into the greens and no forced carries. It’s bargain to play. Staff are friendly. And, if you appreciate great golf course design, you need to visit Bacon Park. And, did I mention what a bargain it is?
Horrible
44 dollars to hit golf balls in your neighbors back yard. Greens were awful worse I’ve ever seen on a golf course. Fairways were crappy greens are bumpy large spots of missing grass and standing water on the greens it’s ridiculous for the price. Painted pvc hammered into the ground in the fairways for tee boxes it’s a 10 to 15 dollar golf course at best. I challenge anyone to find a worse deal then paying full price to pay this poorly maintained grass field with flags and cups.
Simply horrible!!
If the price were 15.00, then maybe this course would be tolerable. I paid 32.00. I am a high handicapper and not very fussy. I am more concerned with value and for that this course is atrocious. For starters, the cart path, what little there is of it is nothing but rutted dirt. Often it would end abruptly or fork off with no clue given as to where the next hole might be. The greens were bald and bumpy, the fairways sparse and sandy. There were virtually no tee boxes, only markers stuck on the fairway. We could not even find the first hole as there was almost nothing in the way of signs or directions. Honestly, it looked like a course that had been closed and abandoned for a good while. The only good points were fast play ( few people playing , guess why) a laid back atmosphere., and a pretty back none given the beautiful trees. Would I play it again. For 15.00 maybe. Why not? You get a cart and there are holes to aim for., kind of an extended driving range.
Bad
Course is in horrible shape, way over priced, greens are absolutely brutal. Might as well putt in a fairway. I grew up out there and was goping after oc has had it and put money into it that itd be nice again. It's in the worse shape I've ever seen it. Photos dont do the course justice, looks great from a distance until you actually get into it. 2 thumbs down and way over priced at more than $40. I'll play elsewhere
Great got a Beginnet Bargain
Great course for a beginner or someone working on a specific part of game, i.e., long drive, mid game and NOT putting. Fun course for friends and a good beer day golf included kind of place. For thr price of 13.00 with cart, I have no complaints.
price for round a little high for conditions
This course has a great layout, it’s a Donald Ross design which speaks for itself however its shape and condition has always been up and down. Greens have always been pretty decent, fairways and rough aren’t the best in the slightest course can get very dry lacking good growing grass a lot of times your lie will be dirt. However it’s a good course but last time I played it was a bit expensive for what it also price of range balls is ridiculous $7 dollars gets you about 20 balls.
Back to your roots
I've played Bacon Park on and off over the years, mostly because i Live in SC. It's a great layout and more importantly it's been transformed back into the course it was supposed to be. Definitely worth a play and as you do you'll feel why so many call that course home.
AWESOME!!!
For $17 (Senior/Walking) I just finished playing a Donald Ross GEM!!! What a wonderful walk & test!!!
Played the back tees as a 2some.at 10:30 on a Thursday in less.than 3:45.
On the Par 3's, I hit 7-iron, 4/5 Hybrid, 9 iron & DRIVER!!!
On the Par 4's, hit 4/5 hybrid FIVE times.
Reached a Par 5 in 2; was greenside on the others in 2.
Summary: VARIETY!! STRATEGIC golf is back!
Greens are architectural MASTERPIECES dating to a time (1926) before lawnmower technology brought us Stimpmeter readings of 10-12...these were probably "7 or 8" (and two were lacking much grass) but it was so much fun. getting to them!!
CANNOT WAIT TO.RETURN!!
Greens in really bad shape. Fairways today weren’t good as well. Has a lot of weeds and bald spots all over. First par 3 has a dirt green. I believe it’s number 4
Not bad for a city course
First time here. From the start, the staff is very friendly. Unfortunately, there was a men's league in front of us so have of play was slow. However, the starter apologized numerous times and was very friendly every time we saw him. The course is a little beat up and some of the greens are scalped pretty good. For a city course it isn't that bad. Not very challenging either.
Golf now
Nice course for a $17 coupon. Each hole was relatively the same. Most of the greens were not pretty but oh well. Good little bargain for golf now. The staff was awesome though. We did get rushed quite a bit by fellow golfer but there’s not much you can do about tht. Everyone used to golf around the same time
needs some TLC
Have played this course several times over the past 3 years. Played it three times this year. Today's round was atrocious. Fairway grass is almost nonexistent, over half of the greens had bald spots, no grass and/or sandy patches, many other greens appeared to have fungus or other type weeds interspersed with the regular grass. Ground was exceedingly dry. I realize we haven't had a lot of rain for the past several weeks but there is no reason they shouldn't be watering the fairways and greens. The operator took this over a few years back and spent a lot of money bringing the course back, but now it appears that maintenance is being put on the back burner.
I won't bother to come back again until they fix the greens and get the fairway grass to grow some. There are too many bare spots on the fairways to get a good ball strike. Not worth the money even if it was $5 a round. Sad indeed. This is one of my hometown courses and I would bring friends and family here but not in the shape it's currently in.
Needs work
Not sure whats going on but the course needs alot of work. This is the growing season and most all the courses are in great shape. We putted through water on the greens as they watered them on a Sunday afternoon. I hit an approach shot and landed in dirt on the green. Lots of weeds and bare spots. Very very dissatisfied. With fall and winter around the corner , i dont know if they will get them back.
