Lake Arrowhead Yacht & Country Club - Highlands Course
About
Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Highland Course at Lake Arrowhead weaves through rolling woodlands. Every hole offers unique scenery and stunning mountain views. The golf course was completely redesigned in 2008, which makes it one of Atlanta's younger courses; nevertheless it has quickly garnered a strong following amongst locals thanks to not only the challenging layout but also the affordable rates and beautiful setting. Lake Arrowhead's convenient location makes it even more appealing, it sits less than an hour north of Atlanta. The golf course features strategically placed bunkers and plenty of trees. It is a layout that requires careful course management. The 14th hole is arguably the most difficult. This tricky par 5 is known to test even the most skilled players.

Friendly staff
The staff at Lake Arrowhead were very friendly during my round. The first tee can be a little confusing and the starter helped me find my way. The course was in great shape compared to my last time playing. The green were recently sanded so they were a little slower than what I’m used to but that’s all part of course management. The layout can be difficult for someone who hasn’t played the course much. A lot of fairways that end earlier than you think. But the approach shots were definitely manageable. Watch out for hole #5 it’s a doozy!
Horrible pace of play
This has been an ongoing problem with this beautiful golf course. We were a twosome and waited 10+ minutes per hole to play. There was never a marshal that came our to check on the play or players. I hope they fix this problem or they will lose business!!!!
Some good & bad
I have played this course a few times but it has always been winter conditions, or cart path only. I was looking foward to playing this weekend as the weather was perfect. $55 for a weekend rate is a great deal in the Atlanta area. I was disappointed to find out they they do not offer junior rates except for ages 15 & under. every other course we've played does 18 and under. Even if it's $10-$20 off, make it affordable for kids that may want to play.
Upon checkin, there was a sign that showed Green dots for conditions, Tee boxes, fairways, greens. I was looking forward to the round. None of this held up. There were quite a few tee boxes that had been over used leaving us standing in sandy areas or not much grass to tee up in. The Greens rolled decent, but my goodness at the pitch marks. This isn't entirely the courses fault as the people playing should fix their pitch marks, but it was really bad. Fairways were in good shape and the bunkers was a mix of good and bad. It appears that some of the water flows towards some bunkers and leaves some ravines going through the bunkers. The one bunker i played out of was in great shape.
We made the turn at 6:00 and were disappointed that the turn grill was closed. One of the staff members said "they shouldn't be closed, go to the other door". We went through the main entrance and into the grill. There was a gentleman sitting at the bar and an employee behind the bar and we were told they were closed. Couldn't even get water.
Overall, we enjoyed the day with family & friends but were very disappointed in the course. There are some great views and the deer were out in full force. I would venture to say we saw well over 50 throughout the day. Lake Arrowhead is out of the way compared to most courses and we drove close to an hour to play. Probably our last time making this trip.
Always fun
1 hr drive, but worth it. Course is in great shape, challenging with only 1 quirky hole. Pace of play issue was mostly due to the slow foursome in front of us. The ranger pushed them a bit.
$20 for wife to ride along???!!!!
Decided to take the wife out to ride along while I played. Played LA a million times over the years. Teeing off at 3:10 (definitely not peak hours) and there was no one on the course. As Im checking in I am informed that my $44 round will be $64 since my wife wants to ride along. Thinking there is some confusion somewhere I reiterate that my wife isnt playing. Doesnt matter. Begrudgingly, I paid it and went about my round. The greed has gotten out of hand. Especially unjustifiable greed like this. No worries Lake Arrowhead. Im sure youre doing great and dont need my money. Good news for you. Youve gotten all youre gonna get. For the other suckers youll get in the future, you might consider putting that in writing somewhere. Oh, and fill the bunkers in or make them part of the course.
Average Course
The course was just ok. The greens were in good condition but the pace of play was extremely slow. 5+ hours for 18.
Great Value for Money
Public course off beaten path. Worth drive to play this challenging course.
Great day at Arrowhead
Lake Arrowhead is a very challenging but well laid out golf course. The Mountain views are spectacular . The course is in great condition and greens are exceptional. While playing you can encounter deer, turkeys, and other wildlife.
I strongly recommend Lake Arrowhead for a great day of golf.
Early morning
We were told the greens were punched over a week ago but I think they were punched the day before. Solid sand and you really couldn't even putt.
Lake Arrowhead
I had not played Lake Arrowhead Golf Course for about 5 years. I had played 4 times before.
I do have to say it was 4/18, obviously early spring. I was surprised, if not disappointed for the course conditions. The course website had listed that the course greens had recently been aerated. As we started, we took that into consideration. But quite a lot the greens had a lot sand on them, not understandable.
There were a lot of huge areas on the course that were “clay” patches, I guess from construction. We were able to play and we had a lot fun. I had wanted to play this course because of its trees & scenery, that was accomplished. But I was disappointed in the overall conditions of the course.
Wait a month and pray for rain
We have played this course several times with great conditions, but the best green on the course this time was the practice putting green. The aeration was OK there, as the sanding was very light and even. All the other greens had patches of heavy sand in spots with little sand in other places. Putting was impossible to judge. The fairways were rock hard with just a little bit of green grass. Thin lies were the name of the game. We had several holes in which drives landing on one side of the fairway resulted in rolls into hazards on the other side of the fairways! The conditions destroyed what was left of an otherwise beautiful day. Wait a month and check other reviews.
Great staff, beautiful course.
The staff was great, the course is beautiful will rolling hills. The only flat spot is the tees. Pretty difficult course for a beginner. They were working on the greens so we were able to play at a great discount. I will be going back! I guess if I had to complain about something. It was the lack of signs telling you which way to go on some of the holes. Great experience for my son and I.
Golf cart did not have enough power to climb a hill!! I had to get out and walk the hill and i have bad hips and mobility issues. That was ridicules! My partner said it has happed to him before on the same hill!!
Course condition is terrible for the second time
This was my second time playing this course. The first time, the tee boxes were in terrible shape. So I thought maybe they’ll just repair them and I’ll give them another shot in a year. Nope. Came back and the tee boxes were worse, the fairways were rock hard and had very little grass. It was almost more advantageous to hit into the rough to have a better lie. And many of the tee boxes were literally straight sand. Pretty difficult to generate power when the ground sliding beneath your feet.
To their credit, they were re-sodding some of the tee boxes. However, it’s clear they neglected and mismanaged them for so long that the other tee boxes literally became sand traps.
It’s just a shame because this course has all the makings to be an incredible course. Its location is great. The mountain and forest vibes are peaceful. There’s wildlife everywhere. It’s quiet. The layout/design is the right amount of challenging. I want to like this course so bad. But with two bad experiences now, I’m highly unlikely to give it another shot.
