Gateway National Golf Links
About
Gateway National Golf Club is the top public golf course in St. Louis. The course sprawls across gently rolling pasturelands crossed with ribbons of tall native grasses and sprinkled with mature cottonwood trees. There are also several sparkling lakes that dot the course, providing challenges on several holes. Although it's nowhere near the ocean, the golf course has a classic links layout with wood-tie bunkers and subtle but tricky mounding that is in the tradition of great British Isles courses such as Carnoustie and the Old Course at St. Andrews. The Gateway National layout even incorporates Scottish-style burns. The fairways are generous but they are lined with rough that will readily swallow errant shots. It is a long golf course at 7,178 yards and it even boasts one of Illinois' longest par 4s, the 482-yard fifth hole.

Always a good time
Come to gateway for a challenge of all skill levels
Early spring at Gateway
The course was aerated yesterday and today so the greens were not their usual top notch but you can see all of the work the grounds crew is doing and in 2 weeks the course will be in spectacular shape. I still love their bent grass fairways and they are the only course that's green this early in the year.
It’s gone downhill
Used to LOVE Gateway. I understand it’s March....but REALLY bumpy greens, hard to find grass to play off of anywhere except the fairways and greens (I’m sure there’s a good joke there) and the person in charge of the pro shop was not friendly and very unfriendly. Hopefully they get the place back to top shape as it was a short couple years ago.
Bureaucratic course management
In a sentence… 16 golf carts on number 10 at noon time standing there watching each other T off. Frost delay? It was frozen the whole time. No matter what tee? 1 or 10? It’s December in St Louis. I’ve been to others Walters management courses .... and they said the same exact thing. I also have played everywhere else! That cannot be real and never happens anywhere else. NEVER. it’s a mathematical loop and cannot be substantiated. Gathered the money, back the groups up, and half the groups never finished leaving disgusted as you see the other nine empty next to you during the warm of the afternoon? Zero common sense. No carts in the parking lot to pick up your clubs? Let the people golf?
One of the best
Quite frankly I don't play Gateway more often b/c the prices can be pretty steep and most of my buddies aren't interested in paying $70+ to play a round. I've only played the course twice and loved it both times. The greens were in incredible shape. The fairways looked good, a lot of people don't know that you need to fill the bent grass divots with sand but conditions were amazing for December. Certainly a bit of the links feel, I love the native grasses and marshes throughout. If you're driving the ball well you can score pretty well on the course. Reminded me a bit of some courses in Carolina with some marshes and some controlled landing zones. The par 3's, I personally felt played tough, there is from my understanding always wind at Gateway and the angles of the par 3's made it a bit tricky but that's fun. As far as public courses in the metro this is in my top 4.
Top Golf
Great course, Probably one of the best in this area of St. Louis. Unfortunately, It happens to be located in Madison Illinois which has absolutely no off course amenities worth stopping for. Nonetheless play in this course was a joy totally well Greens were absolutely true and very challenging over all. Not too difficult to enjoy however I will definitely play each chance I get.
Excellent course!!
It was really cold today which kept most people off the course. The course was in really nice condition for this time of the year. Fairways were excellent, greens were different paces but well maintained overall, and tee boxes were fantastic! I will definitely be back soon
I would advise not buying into the special of 8 rounds for $200. Its next to impossible to book a tee time before 1pm.They limit you to Monday thru Wednesday only and then they close those days occasionally for special events.
Great course
Combination links and marsh course, Open fairways, sand , water and marsh around greens, White tees played long. Great views of theSt. Louis arch,, downtown St . Louis and the cable tower on the.bridge. Need to be accurate around greens and with approach shots. Have fun.
Best in St. Louis.
By far the best course I’ve played all year! From the moment I arrived until I left the staff was eager to help me in any way possible. The course is in Beautiful shape and just keeps getting better each and every year. The ladies on the course and inside were very friendly and were always stocked with cold beer :) If I had to complain, I’d say the ball marks were a little troublesome but, that is on my fellow golfers not the course. Thank you Gateway!
$100 for the round was a bit extreme
I realize this was their busiest day of the year with the PGA Championship in town, but jacking the rates up and cramming more groups on the course was a little ridiculous. As a foursome we paid $100 each for a 10 AM tee time. Front 9 played in 2 hours, 40 minutes. There was then a 20 minute wait at the turn. Was told the back nine would play faster, but after 2 hours we gave up and quit after 16 holes so we could make our afternoon tee time at another course. Course was in great shape, but the pace of play made the experience very frustrating.
Nice Track , Nice Value
Nice layout, front 9 plays long. Can gain strokes on the back 9. Beautiful bent grass fairways and greens. Pace of play great and friendly staff. Driving range and putting greens available. Great value-done forget your senior discount! lol Beautiful of the Arch. Course drains well. I'd play again~hopefully when its drier! Love the yardage book.
Best Shape Ever
I played Gateway on June 2. It was in outstanding shape. The best ever. Played it on July 14. Still in great shape but the bent grass fairways were stressing from the St. Louis heat. You couldn't ride your cart on the fairways. Please do yourself a favor. Play Gateway this year - they have done a great job on the conditioning of the course.
Nice course plays long
This is the first time I played this course and overall I was very pleased. It’s a bit pricey usually, so the hot deal really made this a great deal. I went at a perfect time and was paired with two additional singles. We didn’t have to wait for a single group all day. The fairways are wide and allow for some forgiveness, but it plays longer than it seems. I’m was thankful that one person in my group was a member. There are a couple confusing turns on that cart paths between holes. The course itself was in great shape. There was a crew actively working on tee boxes and greens during my round. They were aware of us coming up to a hole, stopped working, and let us play uninterrupted. The only updating desperately needing done is to the various bridges. They are old. Some are little shaky and the piece of plywood in the middle of one was concerning.
An awesome Sunday
An awesome Sunday! We were able to play 18 miles in four hours on a beautiful day. Loved the pace of play! The course is very long and challenging. The staff were great as well. Highly recommend
Gateway to the west and a good course!
Great condition as usual, love the fairways and greens. Layout is very good as well, a treat
