Gateway National Golf Links
About
Gateway National Golf Club is the top public golf course in St. Louis. The course sprawls across gently rolling pasturelands crossed with ribbons of tall native grasses and sprinkled with mature cottonwood trees. There are also several sparkling lakes that dot the course, providing challenges on several holes. Although it's nowhere near the ocean, the golf course has a classic links layout with wood-tie bunkers and subtle but tricky mounding that is in the tradition of great British Isles courses such as Carnoustie and the Old Course at St. Andrews. The Gateway National layout even incorporates Scottish-style burns. The fairways are generous but they are lined with rough that will readily swallow errant shots. It is a long golf course at 7,178 yards and it even boasts one of Illinois' longest par 4s, the 482-yard fifth hole.

Best of St Louis
Gateway is the only public course in the area with bent grass fairways and greens and for this time of the year the only green course around. Steve in the Pro Shop was extremely helpful and Courtney in the restaurant was great ! Simply a must play in St Louis. The greens were recently airated and were still faster them many other courses I've played here.
Lots of fun to play.
Tee boxes, fairways & greens are among the best in the area.
Great Course
I love this course. You can't beat the value. Bentgrass fairways are my favorite.
December afternoon getaway
Very friendly staff. Greens were in great condition. Pace of play was quick as we needed. Only drawback was that fairways were recently plugged but that will be fine in a couple of rains.
Nice cold weather golf
The course was in great shape for this time of the year
Even though it was a 50 degree day the staff was still up beat and provided that extra service that made the round fun.
I hope there are a few more warm days this winter to enjoy the course again.
Play was good. Good value for the money. Its fall so probably wont be able to afford it in the summer. But over all good course... I will return .
Not even a close second
Gateway is always one of the top courses in the area during the whole year, but there isn't even a close second come November to March. The bent grass fairways are the only ones within 200 miles that haven't gone dormant and still are green and beautiful
Best public course in St Louis
Gateway is a gem of a layout with by far the best public bent grass fairways within 200 miles! With their dynamic pricing even the golfer on a tight budget can find a deal. 18 is my favorite finishing hole in the area. The staff are awesome and helpful. If you're in the pro shop at the right time they will have super 70% of deals on shirts. Only negative is beer prices could be a little lower for a senior on a budget ?
Save Your Money - Way better STL options
Stay away from Gateway National! Worst greens in St. Louis right now. No need to even putt. They aerated greens this week and just destroyed their normally great greens. It is a total waste of time and money. In addition it was slow (almost 5 hours), borderline rude staff, and cart girls were so poorly stocked that I just had them go ahead instead of buying. Too many other great courses in STL to waste good money at Gateway
Nice little trick they pulled by not aerating the putting green. You don't know how bad they are until you're on the course with no options!
Great time
Nice to play in view of the St Louis skyline including the Arch. Course has a nice variety of challenging holes. Course was in great shape.
One of my favorite courses to play in the area
The course is always in great shape. Greens are receptive and fairly fast and true. Fairways are generous but wayward shot are costly. A good test to see where your golf game is.
Nice course
The course played very fair I really liked it. It's a little tricky as there at no hole pictures on the signs or scorecard so it's a little difficult to know where the hazards lie. They do have a yardage book for sale so I would probably recommend getting it. I didn't know about until it was too late.
Other than that I look forward to going back for another test
Great value
I really liked the course design. The conditions were excellent and the staff were great. Pace of play was a bit slow but it was a Saturday afternoon and I'll give them a pass on that. Will definitely play this course again when I am in St. Louis area.
The course is challenging
Greens good but soft fairways with divots all over not repaired by golfers
Great layout but needs care
Played this morning as a single and paired with a very nice gentleman from New Jersey....was extremely hot and humid day. I have played this course numerous times over the past 8 years. Greeted nicely at the pro shop and was assured the course was in excellent condition. Teed off on the first hole and was immediately surprised at the lack of conditioning I had seen in the past. It was difficult to tell between the fairway and the rough. The fairways were overgrown with large patches of weeds. The greens had been aerated and sanded recently and rolled well but much slower than we were lead to believe and and slower than in the past. The back nine was in slightly better condition but there were many areas of neglect. The cart paths were full of potholes easily remedied by more sand but unfortunately that too has been overlooked for too long Madison Green was a well manicured challenging course. After the round, I visited the proshop to speak with management but he was out having a lesson. The comment from the staff i spoke with was that Aug is the worst time of year for conditioning...Because i think the course design is worth a trip back at another time, my recommendation would be to play for anything less than $30.
