Gateway National Golf Links
About
Gateway National Golf Club is the top public golf course in St. Louis. The course sprawls across gently rolling pasturelands crossed with ribbons of tall native grasses and sprinkled with mature cottonwood trees. There are also several sparkling lakes that dot the course, providing challenges on several holes. Although it's nowhere near the ocean, the golf course has a classic links layout with wood-tie bunkers and subtle but tricky mounding that is in the tradition of great British Isles courses such as Carnoustie and the Old Course at St. Andrews. The Gateway National layout even incorporates Scottish-style burns. The fairways are generous but they are lined with rough that will readily swallow errant shots. It is a long golf course at 7,178 yards and it even boasts one of Illinois' longest par 4s, the 482-yard fifth hole.

Check with course
Even with the heavy flooding, course was in really good condition. Greens putted true and fairways were perfect. Sand traps took the beating for this low laying course and were weak at best.

Gateway National is a gem in the STL area
This golf course is private club caliber from the staff to the challenging golf course. Too many people do not fill in their divots in the bent grass fairways, so they take a beating. But the maintenance crew does an outstanding job, especially considering the number of rounds played annually. The par 3s lack variety, but that would be my only minor complaint about Gateway National. One of the top 3 public courses in the metro STL area!
6 hour round
Course was in wonderful shape. Staff was nice but need to do a better job managing the pace of play. No round should take 6 hours.
FIX YOUR DIVOTS!!!!
I love the course, and really can't wait to play it again when the greens fill in and smooth out a bit more. Layout is great and the grass in the fairways is fun to play from. That said, there's some lazy people out there, that from the looks of the divots are good players, that are damaging the course by not fixing this divots. I replaced dozens of perfectly replaceable pieces of fairway that were left to die by either people who don't know better (doubt it) or guys that don't care.
GREAT COURSE LETS KEEPMIT THAT WAY.
Best bang for the buck
Gateway is hard but fair. The fairways are always in good shape. The greens were just aerated, but should be ready to roll at a 12-13 in no time.
Enjoyed the round
This is a really nice course with great backdrops on some of the holes.
I played alone and was the first one out, so I can't really speak about pace of play.
There are a decent amount of challenges on the course, but the fairways are very wide and forgiving. The tee boxes, fairways and greens were in great shape.
My only issue here was that the areas that typically have high grass along the fairways (now were cleared, presumably to start the season with new grass there) were loaded with literally thousands of old golf balls. So if your ball went off the fairway a little, it was impossible to find your ball mixed in with all the old ones. They need to get rid of all those balls.
I will definitely play here again.

Great course as always in good shape... it was good to have course management keep the pace moving ..usually that has not been done.. pace of play should be first and foremost to management on this wonderful tract..
Rates are very competitive to area courses with specials very appealing....
Good course
Enjoy the round even though pace of play was a little slow, as it is early in the season the greens were rolling pretty good and with good speed. Need to clean up all the burnt brush area and remove all the burnt balls . I am sure this will be done as the weeks progress. All in all it's a good course to play at.
Favorite Course in the St. Louis Area
Always wanted to write a review for Gateway but never got around to it until now. My favorite course to play in the STL area (played about 25-30 courses around the area) and it's always in fantastic shape. Keep it up Gateway staff!
Friendly staff. Convenient. Fun round.
There's nothing better than a February round in St. Louis, MO. Once at the course, everything is great. However, the actual location is not in the greatest area. Very friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere.
Clubhouse staff was difficult and not very friendly - they had "ran out of range balls" despite it being a weekday at noon. They did not offer any apologies or compensation for the inconvenience. Course itself is great and one of my favorites, however it was unfortunate that their customer services is lacking.
Outstanding fairways
These are the best fairways I've played in St. Louis, and this was in February. Not the most scenic surroundings, but the course itself is top 3 in St. Louis. It's hard to score low because of the length, but even an average golfer is going to have fun because the wide, well manicured fairways accommodate not so straight shots, so you won't be hitting out of the rough or trees all day. I think I used every club in the bag too, which is much more fun than driver, wedge, putt for a whole round. Check out their website for hole-by-hole tips on how to play the course.
Winter Golf
Getting to play Gateway National for $20 dollars and some change was well worth it being the course is in great condition for February in IL. Obviously the condition of the greens and fairways are not perfect this time of year, but this course more than makes up for it with it's amazing layout. Also the staff was very helpful and professional which is what you'd expect from a top notch course like Gateway. Can't wait to come back and play this spring.
One of the bests
I play gateway all the time. IMO there is only one other 1st tier public course in the St. Louis area and it's 30 minutes away from downtown St. Louis, so it's not as convenient. The staff is great, the quality of the course is on point, and the layout is challenging enough to avoid boredom. The only issue is the occasional entitled member that won't let you pass or is just unpleasant--nothing new to the game...just annoying.
Overall it's a great course and I love it.
