Gateway National Golf Links
About
Gateway National Golf Club is the top public golf course in St. Louis. The course sprawls across gently rolling pasturelands crossed with ribbons of tall native grasses and sprinkled with mature cottonwood trees. There are also several sparkling lakes that dot the course, providing challenges on several holes. Although it's nowhere near the ocean, the golf course has a classic links layout with wood-tie bunkers and subtle but tricky mounding that is in the tradition of great British Isles courses such as Carnoustie and the Old Course at St. Andrews. The Gateway National layout even incorporates Scottish-style burns. The fairways are generous but they are lined with rough that will readily swallow errant shots. It is a long golf course at 7,178 yards and it even boasts one of Illinois' longest par 4s, the 482-yard fifth hole.

Favorite Course in the St. Louis Area
Always wanted to write a review for Gateway but never got around to it until now. My favorite course to play in the STL area (played about 25-30 courses around the area) and it's always in fantastic shape. Keep it up Gateway staff!
Friendly staff. Convenient. Fun round.
There's nothing better than a February round in St. Louis, MO. Once at the course, everything is great. However, the actual location is not in the greatest area. Very friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere.
Clubhouse staff was difficult and not very friendly - they had "ran out of range balls" despite it being a weekday at noon. They did not offer any apologies or compensation for the inconvenience. Course itself is great and one of my favorites, however it was unfortunate that their customer services is lacking.
Outstanding fairways
These are the best fairways I've played in St. Louis, and this was in February. Not the most scenic surroundings, but the course itself is top 3 in St. Louis. It's hard to score low because of the length, but even an average golfer is going to have fun because the wide, well manicured fairways accommodate not so straight shots, so you won't be hitting out of the rough or trees all day. I think I used every club in the bag too, which is much more fun than driver, wedge, putt for a whole round. Check out their website for hole-by-hole tips on how to play the course.
Winter Golf
Getting to play Gateway National for $20 dollars and some change was well worth it being the course is in great condition for February in IL. Obviously the condition of the greens and fairways are not perfect this time of year, but this course more than makes up for it with it's amazing layout. Also the staff was very helpful and professional which is what you'd expect from a top notch course like Gateway. Can't wait to come back and play this spring.
One of the bests
I play gateway all the time. IMO there is only one other 1st tier public course in the St. Louis area and it's 30 minutes away from downtown St. Louis, so it's not as convenient. The staff is great, the quality of the course is on point, and the layout is challenging enough to avoid boredom. The only issue is the occasional entitled member that won't let you pass or is just unpleasant--nothing new to the game...just annoying.
Overall it's a great course and I love it.
Excellent groundskeepers
The tee boxes & greens are in excellent shape and the Bent grass fairways are nicer than the carpeting in my living room A+ for the groundskeepers working on this course
Overall Not Bad
The course condition is good. The fairway is in excellent shape. Some areas of the tee boxes have a fair share of divets, but still fairly good. The green is a bit dry and sandy.
The course is near the Raceway, so it was loud. If you prefer to have a nice and quiet day out golfing, this might not be your choice.
When we make the turn, we were backed up. A guy drove up to two groups in front of us, chatted with them and (we believe) explained the situation why we are backed up, and he totally ignored us, when he came and left. Driving past us as if we don't exist. Not friendly at all.
Over rated
This is without a doubt the most overrated course in St. Louis area, maybe the whole country. There is only one redeeming thing about a sky line of St. Louis. So what if it has bent grass fairways, you go north that is all there is. Let them grow a little. I have played 40 different courses this year and I rate it about 32 from the top. There are only a few good holes here 6,7, 10,12, 18. The rest are so boring, you hardly know which way to play them, across the fairway or the way they were designed. The FW are so wide, no character. Now they have left the sand traps go down the tube. The faces of the bunkers are full of weeds in between the railroad ties, that is a nice touch. I have played 524 courses and rate this 235, not good for a course some think is great.
Greens need work
It is a shame that players do not fix their ball marks and that there are no roaming marshals to enforce that.
Great staff and course
I played for the first time I Gateway national, the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, The bar/food counter staff was incredibly friendly as well. The course was well taken care of and the greens were very nice. Some holes played hard some easier but all and all great time .
SLOW
They have been overbooking this course lately. If it's not overbooked then they need to fire their Marshall because the pace of play is rediculous. The weeds in the bunkers are nothing to look at while you are waiting to hit your next shot either.
Nice layout and in good condition.
I was enjoying the round until the final three holes. The pace of play was good. Then the twosome in front of me became a foursome. Someone had to leave fora business call and they retuned. It took over 45 minutes to play the final three holes. A par 3 and two par 4's. A group of four two groups ahead of me took at least 15 minutes on a tee box while they talked to the beer cart girl. By the time they left the tee box, nobody was ahead of them on the par 4. This totally ruined what was relaxing round.
Gateway is a great course
Gateway is one of my favorite courses in St.Louis. The tee box, fairways and greens are always in excellent condition.
Good and Bad - 3.5 Stars
Pros:
Greens and fairways have nice grass but lots of divots
Driving range
Good views
Links ish (weeds instead of trees)
Beverage Cart
Good if you like driver
Staff was friendly and respectful. Seemed organized.
Rough was fair
Cons:
Wouldn't pay full price
Greens have lots of ball marks
Bunkers are a joke. Dirt or standing water. Biggest con.
Lack of yardage markers or signs
They don't sell Titleist balls
I liked it and will go back for the right price, but it's far from the best course in the area. Sand in the bunkers and fixing divots would go a long way. Definitely check it out.
Links golf on east side
Great links layout. Wide fairways, need length off tee on this course. Links style offers many differ shot making opportunities.
