Gateway National Golf Links
About
Gateway National Golf Club is the top public golf course in St. Louis. The course sprawls across gently rolling pasturelands crossed with ribbons of tall native grasses and sprinkled with mature cottonwood trees. There are also several sparkling lakes that dot the course, providing challenges on several holes. Although it's nowhere near the ocean, the golf course has a classic links layout with wood-tie bunkers and subtle but tricky mounding that is in the tradition of great British Isles courses such as Carnoustie and the Old Course at St. Andrews. The Gateway National layout even incorporates Scottish-style burns. The fairways are generous but they are lined with rough that will readily swallow errant shots. It is a long golf course at 7,178 yards and it even boasts one of Illinois' longest par 4s, the 482-yard fifth hole.

Great time
Nice to play in view of the St Louis skyline including the Arch. Course has a nice variety of challenging holes. Course was in great shape.
One of my favorite courses to play in the area
The course is always in great shape. Greens are receptive and fairly fast and true. Fairways are generous but wayward shot are costly. A good test to see where your golf game is.
Nice course
The course played very fair I really liked it. It's a little tricky as there at no hole pictures on the signs or scorecard so it's a little difficult to know where the hazards lie. They do have a yardage book for sale so I would probably recommend getting it. I didn't know about until it was too late.
Other than that I look forward to going back for another test
Great value
I really liked the course design. The conditions were excellent and the staff were great. Pace of play was a bit slow but it was a Saturday afternoon and I'll give them a pass on that. Will definitely play this course again when I am in St. Louis area.
The course is challenging
Greens good but soft fairways with divots all over not repaired by golfers
Great layout but needs care
Played this morning as a single and paired with a very nice gentleman from New Jersey....was extremely hot and humid day. I have played this course numerous times over the past 8 years. Greeted nicely at the pro shop and was assured the course was in excellent condition. Teed off on the first hole and was immediately surprised at the lack of conditioning I had seen in the past. It was difficult to tell between the fairway and the rough. The fairways were overgrown with large patches of weeds. The greens had been aerated and sanded recently and rolled well but much slower than we were lead to believe and and slower than in the past. The back nine was in slightly better condition but there were many areas of neglect. The cart paths were full of potholes easily remedied by more sand but unfortunately that too has been overlooked for too long Madison Green was a well manicured challenging course. After the round, I visited the proshop to speak with management but he was out having a lesson. The comment from the staff i spoke with was that Aug is the worst time of year for conditioning...Because i think the course design is worth a trip back at another time, my recommendation would be to play for anything less than $30.
Great value
Great value, would play again and tell everyone to go there. Friendly staff. Very nice clubhouse. Condition of course great. Bent grass fairways and greens were excellent. Greens putted true and fast. They were consi stang on all 18 holes
A lot more than I expected
Based upon the reviews of the course, I choose to play here while passing thru the area. A very well conceived design where each hole feels separated from the others, even though the course is nearly treeless. More wetlands than your classic links style layout. Plenty of sand and very undulated greens that offer opportunities for multiple pin locations. Condition were excellent. Views of the Gateway Arch and downtown St Louis were neat.
Hot Deal was great DEAL !!!
This is a great upscale course in the the St. Louis area. The course layout and choice of tee boxes allows for golfers of all abilities to have a challenging yet enjoyable round. I am surprised that their are not more amenities for a course of this caliber and price range. Their was no bag service when dropping bags off and no one their when we finished our round to unload the cart and wipe clubs down. The lounge gives you a clear plastic bag for your purchased beverages and does not offer any type of cooler for your purchased drinks. I would like to see more off course amenities for the price range of play.
First time playing here, very impressed.
Got a golf now time for $15 and it couldn't have been anymore of a steal. One of the nicest courses I have ever played, plays long but fair. If you stay in play and lag putt on the large greens you can definitely score here. One thing, at the turn you do not go back to the clubhouse, I think this is traditional for links style but be aware if it's your first time here. Beautiful course, would definitely play here again, although the $73 normal green fee is a bit steep.
Last minute round of golf due to Cardinals day change to night game
Didn't know of many courses in St Louis area so we took a shot in the dark. We were staying in a hotel 5 miles from Gateway and they had a 10 am tee time open. Courted exceeded all expectations. We will definitely be back again.
Perfect
Its hard to have a golf course and make the patrons think as though they are the only ones on the course. This course does just that with the way they use the mounds and the tall grass. The greens were perfect, quick but receptive. The fairways were great, but please fix your divots. Some of the landing area had taken a lot of abuse and the staff does all they can but its on the players to help some too. I showed up as a single, and was paired with 2 gentlemen. One was a member that gave me the run down of the course, where to be and where not to be. The other guy was super nice. We had an absolute blast! I will certainly be back.
Avoid the Landmines
I gave this 4 stars because 4.5 isn't an option. What knocks it down to me is that the course appears to get a ton of play, and the fairways are landmines of divots, mostly not replaced or filled with sand. So you can hit perfect drives and not be rewarded very easily. The greens are also a bit pock-marked with unfixed divots.
Other than that, the layout is great, as are the views of St. Louis. Only 10 minutes (no traffic) from the Arch. The fairways are wide and forgiving (other than what I said above). If you spray, there is a lot of tall native grass waiting to swallow the ball. Greens had good speed and rolled true (again, aside from what I said above). Pace of play isn't too bad despite the high play count. Seems to host a lot of tournaments, so be aware when looking for tee times. Discounts can be found on their web page. If you're around, or just traveling through like I was, it's well worth a stop!
Challenging
Challenging course. Strong need to stay in the fairway. Only weak spot is many players do not fill their divots. Friendly staff
Condition was great
I booked a late tee time (4pm) hoping to miss most of the crowd, but there were several groups ahead of us that were playing a bit slower than pace of play. My son and I play this course a few times a year and always enjoy it. We called it quits after 12 holes (roughly 7pm) as we were waiting too long to tee off. Average of 25 min per hole is unacceptable for me. Pace of play was right at 5 plus hrs for 18 holes. We would have never made all 18 if we continued until dark. A bit disappointed in this, but we really enjoy the course so we will definitely be back. Great course to play and would recommend it to others. My advice would be to play it during the week during business hours.
