Gateway National Golf Links
About
Gateway National Golf Club is the top public golf course in St. Louis. The course sprawls across gently rolling pasturelands crossed with ribbons of tall native grasses and sprinkled with mature cottonwood trees. There are also several sparkling lakes that dot the course, providing challenges on several holes. Although it's nowhere near the ocean, the golf course has a classic links layout with wood-tie bunkers and subtle but tricky mounding that is in the tradition of great British Isles courses such as Carnoustie and the Old Course at St. Andrews. The Gateway National layout even incorporates Scottish-style burns. The fairways are generous but they are lined with rough that will readily swallow errant shots. It is a long golf course at 7,178 yards and it even boasts one of Illinois' longest par 4s, the 482-yard fifth hole.

Best course in area
As always course was in great shape, greens are fast, rough is thick, tee boxes pristine....fairways are the highlight, as it's the only course with bent grass in the area...views of the cityscape are beautiful.....it's a very flat course with only a little water, but plays 5-10 strokes harder than most courses in the area due to the rough, length, and well thought out and subtly challenging layout....by far the best course in the area
Links style.
This was the first time I've played here. I'm not a huge fan of links style courses. This course plays very tight. You have to be a straight shooter off the tee, no exceptions! My biggest complaint would be the amount of water the course holds. It did rain 12 hours before we played at 11am (less than 1") but it played as if it had rained for 5 days and nights. Nice tee boxes and fairways. First cut of rough is 4" tall and thick enough to lose balls in. Overall, I would play it one more time just to be fair about this review, but it will have to be when it hasn't rained for a couple of days.
Always great.....As good as I've seen it!
My opinion of this course is always very high so I am trying to write this review with little bias. As you know, if you have played this golf course, it is a great layout in incredible shape. If you have not, you are missing the best links experience of any in the bi-state area and beyond. The bent grass fairways are as lush as I have seen them. The bunkers have new sand, I can at least vouch for the greenside bunker on #4. This is a beautiful golf course! Lush fairways and great views of downtown St Louis skyline. Play it and may I suggest choose your tee box wisely. It ALWAYS plays longer than the yardage indicates so be kind to your fellow golfers! Play it forward!!
A definate play in St. Louis.
Very nice course, fair but challenging. Course conditions were good. Nice view of St. Louis skyline on several holes. The only criticism was pace of play. Our tee time was at 7:24 and it took almost 5 hours to play. The foursome in front of us were slower than molasses. There was a gap of at least two holes, we didn't see another group in front of them since early on the front nine. We commented to a couple of different marshals about their pace of play but no improvement. The starter seemd to know one of the guys in the foursome so they must be regulars. The slow player showed up in a Porsche, I wonder if he drives as slow as he plays golf. This messes up the course for the entire day.
the course was in great shape
the course was very busy it was a very nice day. the course played hard because of the wind. The pace of play was slow. the cart girls came around at a timely manner, and the consession stand was open which made it good.
Beautiful place, slow round
This is a spectacular setting and the conditions were excellent. The only issue I had was slow play. I understand that can happen, but I didn't see anyone from the facility trying to do anything about it. That was frustrating.
Great fairways, good greens and a quick round.
I really enjoyed the course layout. Not too much trouble off the tees but some challenging approach shots and lengthy holes. I loved the bentgrass fairways. For $30 this is hard to beat.
One of the best public courses in the St. Louis area
Always a great course! It is challenging, with a great layout.
Fairways were really wet but perfect shape
Tee boxes maintained nicely. Pin placements were very difficult . I don't mind a few hard ones but not 14 of them. No need to trick up a great golf course. We are amateurs trying to enjoy a day off. Other than that nice day on the links!
Great course in great shape
Course was in superb shape, probably the best I played all summer. Greens are super fast but were in perfect condition. Koodos to the groundskeeper!
The sand traps.
This is a "links" course, but for years they ignore the bunkers!
Bunkers are a intricate part of a links course & they haven't been touched by maintenance for YEARS!
It's an embarrassment to see this much less play the course.
I DO NOT recommend you spend your money here.
Great and fun fairways.....greens need attention.
My friend and I played Gateway for the first time. The fairways were in great shape, and we both liked the layout. Allows you to sharpen your fairway wood play as there are several long holes where you can let it all out. Many of the greens were pock-marked with unrepaired ball marks and spike marks. If you're not going to police that actions of the inconsiderate boobs that cause this damage, then at least take responsibility to maintain them as well as possible. And don't make someone wait ten minutes in the pro shop to check in while you complete a phone call.
Good and bad.
Overall, gateway has been a great course for several years, or as long as I've been playing it anyway. The course has declined slightly but who can complain when you get out there for cheap!
Ok now the bad....pro shop wasn't well stocked, minimal golf balls, NO gloves, charge for tees....ehh. They paired my group of single digit handicappers playing from the tips with a 30+ playing from the whites. Even more awkward and disappointing, they didn't have a cart for this dude.what?! Good course but man do they know how to ruin a good afternoon for you.
Great Sunday Experience
Played on the 28th with the best July weather I've ever experienced. Played the course from the white tees which was just over 6,000 yards was perfect for my game. Seemed like there was a lot of difference between the tee lengths so that everyone could play to a challenging distance. The fairways and greens were in excellent shape, the tee boxes and bunkers could use a little care. You can tell they are working on keeping them maintained. It is neat to look down the fairway and see the arch in the background. A great course that I will definetly play again in the future!
Course was in awesome shape
Our foursome really enjoyed the day. Beatiful weather and the course was in great shape. Greens were very fast but consistent throughout.
The course is in excellent condition. Greens are superb.
I hit 80 percent of the fairways and seventy percent of the greens in regulation. The course didn't seem too difficult, my putting sort of failed. But I sure do enjoy playing at Gateway, what a wonderful/beautiful course to play.
nice course but did'nt get to play it
Booked a tee time for 4:27 on 7/17/2013. When I called the course to confirm my tee time, they told me there were no tee times available after 4:00 pm because of league play and a tournament.
Lucky for me it wasn't a prepay. Its bad enough I lost my $3.98 that they charged me for booking a tee time that didn't exist. Will not use golf now again. Now I just have to figure out how to get off their email list. Jim at the course was very helpful when I called.
Traps were in terrible shape. I have played there before, and it was in pristine shape, but I would only rate as average yesterday.
OK for the money. Traps were in terrible shape. I have played there before, and it was in pristine shape, but I would only rate as average yesterday.
