Gateway National Golf Links
About
Gateway National Golf Club is the top public golf course in St. Louis. The course sprawls across gently rolling pasturelands crossed with ribbons of tall native grasses and sprinkled with mature cottonwood trees. There are also several sparkling lakes that dot the course, providing challenges on several holes. Although it's nowhere near the ocean, the golf course has a classic links layout with wood-tie bunkers and subtle but tricky mounding that is in the tradition of great British Isles courses such as Carnoustie and the Old Course at St. Andrews. The Gateway National layout even incorporates Scottish-style burns. The fairways are generous but they are lined with rough that will readily swallow errant shots. It is a long golf course at 7,178 yards and it even boasts one of Illinois' longest par 4s, the 482-yard fifth hole.

Great course in great shape
Course was in superb shape, probably the best I played all summer. Greens are super fast but were in perfect condition. Koodos to the groundskeeper!
The sand traps.
This is a "links" course, but for years they ignore the bunkers!
Bunkers are a intricate part of a links course & they haven't been touched by maintenance for YEARS!
It's an embarrassment to see this much less play the course.
I DO NOT recommend you spend your money here.
Great and fun fairways.....greens need attention.
My friend and I played Gateway for the first time. The fairways were in great shape, and we both liked the layout. Allows you to sharpen your fairway wood play as there are several long holes where you can let it all out. Many of the greens were pock-marked with unrepaired ball marks and spike marks. If you're not going to police that actions of the inconsiderate boobs that cause this damage, then at least take responsibility to maintain them as well as possible. And don't make someone wait ten minutes in the pro shop to check in while you complete a phone call.
Good and bad.
Overall, gateway has been a great course for several years, or as long as I've been playing it anyway. The course has declined slightly but who can complain when you get out there for cheap!
Ok now the bad....pro shop wasn't well stocked, minimal golf balls, NO gloves, charge for tees....ehh. They paired my group of single digit handicappers playing from the tips with a 30+ playing from the whites. Even more awkward and disappointing, they didn't have a cart for this dude.what?! Good course but man do they know how to ruin a good afternoon for you.
Great Sunday Experience
Played on the 28th with the best July weather I've ever experienced. Played the course from the white tees which was just over 6,000 yards was perfect for my game. Seemed like there was a lot of difference between the tee lengths so that everyone could play to a challenging distance. The fairways and greens were in excellent shape, the tee boxes and bunkers could use a little care. You can tell they are working on keeping them maintained. It is neat to look down the fairway and see the arch in the background. A great course that I will definetly play again in the future!
Course was in awesome shape
Our foursome really enjoyed the day. Beatiful weather and the course was in great shape. Greens were very fast but consistent throughout.
The course is in excellent condition. Greens are superb.
I hit 80 percent of the fairways and seventy percent of the greens in regulation. The course didn't seem too difficult, my putting sort of failed. But I sure do enjoy playing at Gateway, what a wonderful/beautiful course to play.
nice course but did'nt get to play it
Booked a tee time for 4:27 on 7/17/2013. When I called the course to confirm my tee time, they told me there were no tee times available after 4:00 pm because of league play and a tournament.
Lucky for me it wasn't a prepay. Its bad enough I lost my $3.98 that they charged me for booking a tee time that didn't exist. Will not use golf now again. Now I just have to figure out how to get off their email list. Jim at the course was very helpful when I called.
Traps were in terrible shape. I have played there before, and it was in pristine shape, but I would only rate as average yesterday.
OK for the money. Traps were in terrible shape. I have played there before, and it was in pristine shape, but I would only rate as average yesterday.
This is my favorite course in this area
Gateway National is a terrific challenge for any golfer.it has the widest fairways ever seen. But it takes a well struck accurate tee shot to even have a decent shot at birdie. Once on the green there is no relaxing either. I found these to be in wonderful shape and a pleasure to putt. But not easy. There is no OB so if you can find it you can play it. A great place that is a little out of my price range.until I find your great rates. I would play it every day if I could. Thanks!
Great turf
One of the best public track in the area! The turf is some of the best to hit a ball off of. Greens were well maintained and quick!
The course has a nice view of STL.
The course will challenge your golf skills; especially from the championship tees.
One of St. Louis' finest
Gateway is one of my favorite courses in St. Louis.
Not only does it challenge every club in your bag, it's made to walk and designed like the courses of old in Scotland!
Bent grass, good greens, plenty of room, great views of downtown.
Solid track on all accounts. Great group of par 4's, challenging par 3's, a couple of reachable 5's. Love the bent grass fairways. Greens usually in good condition. Plenty of room off the tee on every hole and five sets of tee's to appeal to every golfer. On the St. Louis must-play list.
Course is in great shape
Tee boxes, fairways and greens are all in good shape. Greens were quick and the course was playing pretty fast for as wet as it was.
Great course!
Clubhouse very accommodating to early start. Driving range/putting area nice. Tee boxes, fairways, and greens in great shape. Bunkers could use some attention. They are moving overflowed water on hole #17 but their machine and the water do not affect play unless you are 20 yards short and right of the green. Course also provides a few good views of downtown St. Louis. Enjoy!
Great par 3s
Great shape after recent torrential rains. Par 3s are long and challenging from the back tees. Love the views of STL and the sight lines of each hole.
With all the rain it was good
I really liked the lay out. Will come back and play it again when it isn't so wet. When you have to play cart path only it real hard to find your yardage needs better or more yardage markers.
Course was in great shape considering all the rain
Course was in great condition after receiving several inches of rain the day before. We always enjoy playing this course.
The course was in nice shape tee to green
The course was in decent shape. My only complaint would be with the greens. The green speeds were good and consistant, but a little chewed up. However it is not the fault of the course and staff when ignorant people fail to fix their divots !! Got a $20 rate for late afternoon tee time.
