Gateway National Golf Links
About
Gateway National Golf Club is the top public golf course in St. Louis. The course sprawls across gently rolling pasturelands crossed with ribbons of tall native grasses and sprinkled with mature cottonwood trees. There are also several sparkling lakes that dot the course, providing challenges on several holes. Although it's nowhere near the ocean, the golf course has a classic links layout with wood-tie bunkers and subtle but tricky mounding that is in the tradition of great British Isles courses such as Carnoustie and the Old Course at St. Andrews. The Gateway National layout even incorporates Scottish-style burns. The fairways are generous but they are lined with rough that will readily swallow errant shots. It is a long golf course at 7,178 yards and it even boasts one of Illinois' longest par 4s, the 482-yard fifth hole.

Great Course and great view of STL
Very slow play, that was the only downfall, took 5 hours to play 18 holes.
Yardage Markers!!!
In the past I remember Gateway having GPS on their carts...not present this year. No problem but then the course needs FREQUENT yardage markers on the course. Add these to speed play & reduce the guessing game that your players have to endure.
Course has generous fairways.
Great fairways, 1st cut was a little tall, but recent wet weather has limited cutting opportunities. Good course for those who wish to walk, generally flat.
NICE LAYOUT
GREAT COURSE. GREAT STAFF. MY ONLY BEEF. TOO MANY SINGLE AND TWOSOMES ON THE COURSE. WE WERE A TWOSOME, AND JOINED UP WITH ANOTHER IN FRONT OF US. THERE WERE 3 TWOSOMES AND A SINGLE
IN FRONT OF US. PLAY WAS SLOW. WE FINALLY LEFT AFTER 13 HOLES. WE WERE 3 HOURS AND 20 MINUTES IN. STILL LOVE THE COURSE. IF I HAD PAID FULL PRICE, WOULD OF BEEN VERY UPSET.
Tough but fair
i really liked the layout, it's a mix of links golf and some target holes as well. The greens were in good shape and rolled fast.
Gateway no longer seeking premieire status?
Since it opened, Gateway has been recognized as one of the area's premiere public courses.
Pace of play on the afternoon of Sunday, May 19 was disappointing.
More disappointing was the lack of yardage markings. The removal of GPS from the carts makes markings on the course more important. However, sprinkler heads are few and far between and not all are marked; the 100-150 (except for poles)-200 markers are nondescript or absent, as are too many tee box yardage markers . The yardage book was little or no help - it cost $3 and I would have paid more for a more detailed book.
What's my yardage?
Played on Mother's day afternoon, not crowded, pace of play outstanding. Good layout, course in very good shape, great views of Arch, very nice.-----first thing you notice when you load up is they have stripped all carts of GPS. Okay, but if you're going to do that, you've got to mark the course. I can go to a 9-hole cow pasture and they will have 100,150, and 200 yard markers. I mean, how much can it cost to buy some sticks, some blue, red and white paint, and stick them in the ground. also, I like to drive cart to my car and load up, no carts in parking lot here
Best St. Louis public course!
The course was in fantastic condition and the greens were in great condition. The course was beautiful with all the water hazards full of water. The bent grass fairways are an iron player's dream. My favorite St. Louis course.
Great place to golf As always
Rainy day not too many teeing it up that day, Staff was friendly as usual, they even brought a cart to our car after we checked in since we were going off the back nine first to avoid a college function on the front nine. Greens were recently aerated didn't matter much they rolled well. fairways are a treat to play on definitely the highlight of Gateway. Always a good choice to play especially when its not crowded.
Great Course!!!
I love this golf course. Everything was in good shape. We played on a rainy day and the fairways and rough were still very playable. Ball sits up perfectly in the fairways and the rough is in great shape too. The greens roll consistently. One of the best courses I have played in the St. Louis area.
Fairways are green
It was nice to play a course with green fairways while everywhere else they are still brown. Aeration on the front nine and some of the holes on back nine was reason for bumpy rolls. I have played this course while in better shape, nevertheless, a very nice course.
Course was in bad shape.
There were a few things that irritated me with my round at Gateway. First, the greens on the front nine looked like they were aerated within the last week or so. The greens on the back we in the process of being aerated. In doing so, we weren't able to play (3) holes. Second, the roughs we above my ankles. They hadn't been mowed for 4-5 days. Lastly, there were dandelions and weeds everywhere on the course. I have been playing this course for 5-6 years and this is by far the worst shape I've seen it in. It'll probably come together for them but I would have been better off to play somewhere else for half the money.
Course can be very challenging if you miss the fairway.
The course is well maintained and is a challenging course to play. This is a links course but there are plenty of fairway bunkers, water, sand traps, and other hazards to add to challenges that the links grasses and generally tall rough bring. Bring lots of balls if you can't hit straight. On the down side, I would expect that a course that charges premium prices would offer the same equipment as offered by similar courses but the carts were not equipped with ball/club washers, there may have been a few ball washers scattered around the course but I did not see any, and the GPS devices had all been removed from the carts. When I requested one the attendant dug around in a drawer and finally found one that had enough juice to power on. The battery was exhausted after the first hole. Additionally, there were several water coolers on the course but the one I tried was empty and there was no cups so I guess you need to purchase your drinks in the clubhouse before your round begins. To be fair though, the greens fees and cart fees were a bargain thru Golfnow and if I can find the same deal again I'll probably return.
Great shape and good value for spring golf!!
The course was in great shape for early spring, considering the 12" snowfall the weekend before. Greens were fast and tight, tee boxes were a bit sparse, but overall the course was in great shape. The value for the money was very good. I just wish the yahoos in front of us played faster. We had to wait on every hole for these guys, who never even thought about letting us play through. Once the season heats up I hope the marshalls get out and speed up the play (Note - we finished in less than 4 hours anyway!)
Great Course
This tee time was Easter Sunday at 3PM. Course was wide open so pace of play of superb. Had cut the greens and they were rolling pretty pure, for time of year exceeded expectations. Course can play pretty long, especially when the wind picks up in your face!
Great greens,tough to putt,fairways great
Awesome shape for having 10 of snow on it a week ago. greens were fast, fairways had some wet areas but to be expected
links madness
Links style course, in which you better bring your A game, and your big boy clubs. Played from the back tees and there is some long, challenging holes. No trees to worry about, but plenty of tall grass areas. Beautiful well kept course, with fast greens.
Decent course, poor staff
On a cold, windy Saturday afternoon, we were told by the pro shop staff we would be teeing off about 5 mnutes late, because "they were a bit backed up." Odd. since the parking lot was less than half full. We teed off 17 minutes after our time, with no explanation. The starter was a kid, who didn't know what he was doing. He didn't tell us who we were playing with, explain the delay, or seem to be interested in his job...The course has a few interesting holes (10, 18) but can also be bland in its sameness. It's very wide off the tee, placing no value on driving accuracy,. The positives: Greens were fast and smooth, there were no houses along the course. I don't really enjoy being charged $5 for 35 range balls at a "nice" course. For what we paid for the greens fee, it was fine, but it's a no go for the rack rate.
Fun course, with mediocre views of the Arch.
It was a little loud with the racing going on next door, but had a great time nonetheless. The course was a little bare, but it is still very early in the season in Missouri, and the city literally had 10 inches of snow the very next day.
Well worth playing
Beautiful bent grass fairways !! This is a great course to play any time of year. It's bentgrass fairways make it much better than other courses during the off-season. The fairways stay green and soft. Great price from golfnow.com !!
