Gateway National Golf Club is the top public golf course in St. Louis. The course sprawls across gently rolling pasturelands crossed with ribbons of tall native grasses and sprinkled with mature cottonwood trees. There are also several sparkling lakes that dot the course, providing challenges on several holes. Although it's nowhere near the ocean, the golf course has a classic links layout with wood-tie bunkers and subtle but tricky mounding that is in the tradition of great British Isles courses such as Carnoustie and the Old Course at St. Andrews. The Gateway National layout even incorporates Scottish-style burns. The fairways are generous but they are lined with rough that will readily swallow errant shots. It is a long golf course at 7,178 yards and it even boasts one of Illinois' longest par 4s, the 482-yard fifth hole.

Fairways are green

It was nice to play a course with green fairways while everywhere else they are still brown. Aeration on the front nine and some of the holes on back nine was reason for bumpy rolls. I have played this course while in better shape, nevertheless, a very nice course.

Course was in bad shape.

There were a few things that irritated me with my round at Gateway. First, the greens on the front nine looked like they were aerated within the last week or so. The greens on the back we in the process of being aerated. In doing so, we weren't able to play (3) holes. Second, the roughs we above my ankles. They hadn't been mowed for 4-5 days. Lastly, there were dandelions and weeds everywhere on the course. I have been playing this course for 5-6 years and this is by far the worst shape I've seen it in. It'll probably come together for them but I would have been better off to play somewhere else for half the money.

Course can be very challenging if you miss the fairway.

The course is well maintained and is a challenging course to play. This is a links course but there are plenty of fairway bunkers, water, sand traps, and other hazards to add to challenges that the links grasses and generally tall rough bring. Bring lots of balls if you can't hit straight. On the down side, I would expect that a course that charges premium prices would offer the same equipment as offered by similar courses but the carts were not equipped with ball/club washers, there may have been a few ball washers scattered around the course but I did not see any, and the GPS devices had all been removed from the carts. When I requested one the attendant dug around in a drawer and finally found one that had enough juice to power on. The battery was exhausted after the first hole. Additionally, there were several water coolers on the course but the one I tried was empty and there was no cups so I guess you need to purchase your drinks in the clubhouse before your round begins. To be fair though, the greens fees and cart fees were a bargain thru Golfnow and if I can find the same deal again I'll probably return.

Great shape and good value for spring golf!!

The course was in great shape for early spring, considering the 12" snowfall the weekend before. Greens were fast and tight, tee boxes were a bit sparse, but overall the course was in great shape. The value for the money was very good. I just wish the yahoos in front of us played faster. We had to wait on every hole for these guys, who never even thought about letting us play through. Once the season heats up I hope the marshalls get out and speed up the play (Note - we finished in less than 4 hours anyway!)

Great Course

This tee time was Easter Sunday at 3PM. Course was wide open so pace of play of superb. Had cut the greens and they were rolling pretty pure, for time of year exceeded expectations. Course can play pretty long, especially when the wind picks up in your face!

links madness

Links style course, in which you better bring your A game, and your big boy clubs. Played from the back tees and there is some long, challenging holes. No trees to worry about, but plenty of tall grass areas. Beautiful well kept course, with fast greens.

Decent course, poor staff

On a cold, windy Saturday afternoon, we were told by the pro shop staff we would be teeing off about 5 mnutes late, because "they were a bit backed up." Odd. since the parking lot was less than half full. We teed off 17 minutes after our time, with no explanation. The starter was a kid, who didn't know what he was doing. He didn't tell us who we were playing with, explain the delay, or seem to be interested in his job...The course has a few interesting holes (10, 18) but can also be bland in its sameness. It's very wide off the tee, placing no value on driving accuracy,. The positives: Greens were fast and smooth, there were no houses along the course. I don't really enjoy being charged $5 for 35 range balls at a "nice" course. For what we paid for the greens fee, it was fine, but it's a no go for the rack rate.

Fun course, with mediocre views of the Arch.

It was a little loud with the racing going on next door, but had a great time nonetheless. The course was a little bare, but it is still very early in the season in Missouri, and the city literally had 10 inches of snow the very next day.

Course in great shape and green for this time of year.

The pace of play was what it should be, just over 4 hours. The condition of the course was great for this time of year. The fairways are still green as they advertise!

Great links design layout.

First time at this course. Overall really enjoyed it...can't wait to get back. Played many links courses in other countries and this one is fair but challenging. When the wind picks up (as on our day) it really does test ones patience and skills. Greens are fast n undulating but fair. The rough is indeed ROUGH! Of interest I attempted the typical long chip n runs from tight lies but the ball checked up more than expected. Used a cart but this is would be better enjoyed walking. Warning on crowded days...be aware of fly-balls crossing at you without warning. Definitely a great course.

Winter golf at it's best

Course was in great shape for December. Golf shop assistant forgot to tell me that everyone was starting on hole 10 so I went to #1 & waited behind a bunch of guys making the turn until the cart attendant came over & told me to go to #10. Other than that everything was great except the pace. It was a great day in Dec & the course was jammed packed so I understand the slow play. (I couldn't get the "ratings" to do anything, but go anywhere but bad, medium or great so I wasn't able to rate properly)

Had the Course to Myself

I got out of jury duty early and it was 50 degrees, so I picked up a tee time at gateway when I saw that it was UNDER 20 BUCKS!!

I got there and to my delight, I was the only person on thr course.

When it comes to courses in St. Louis during winter, there are none better than gateway. The bent grass stays green year round and it makes for a highly enjoyable experience.

I played so fast I had a chance to prospect for some balls inthe tall grass and around the water, came home up 72 balls (including 9 pro v1's) and shot an 82...

Now that's a great day of golf!

Gateway will be a regular stop for me this winter as long as it doesn't snow.

This course has great fairways.

Gateway is always a challenging course for my senior group; we love the course; particularly this time of year since the bentgrass fairways are a great change from all the dormat zoysia fairways at other courses. The only thing that would make Gateway more user friendly for seniors is to set senior tees. Thanks, Roger.

A great course that is always in great shape.

The only course in the area that has bent grass fairways. I do not know how they do it with our summers so hot, but the fairways are always lush and ready to play. The greens are excellent and fast! This is the perfect course ot play during those warm winter days. With green fairways, you will think it is early spring. ONly complaint is the rough around the greens was "clumpy" and made for some bad lies. That is understandable because of the hot dry summer we had. Nevertheless, I will continue to come back to this gem of a course!

Private course quality

I always play here in the fall because of the bentgrass fairways. They are immaculate. All of the other premium public courses in the area are zoisia, and are completely matted down in the fall. They offer some great internet deals and make it very easy for an intermediate level golfer as myself to really enjoy a high level golf course. The normal price is more than I can afford on a regular basis, but they have great deals all year long. Love it.

Well maintained. Convenient. Challenging. Friendly staff.

Links style, well maintained course very convenient to downtown St. Louis, despite interstate highway construction. Tees and green are in great shape. Several of the fairways were newly aerated and/or had many unrepaired divots. Otherwise the course was fun to play...and challenging

As Close To True "Links" As You Can Get

This is why GolfNow is the best site on the web. Play this course for under 30.00 is incredible value. The course plays long even from the blues but the course is in outstanding shape for a November Day. Greens are challenging but fair. Fairways are not forgiving if you are too far left or right. Tee boxes were really smooth and level.
You really have to be prepared to hit long drives and fairway woods on many of the holes. The Par 5s are over 500 yards.
It was a really fun day and I went through the course in under 3 hours. Also the clubhouse is really nice.
