Royal Ka'anapali
About
Maui's Ka'anapali Resort is built upon 1,200 acres of land home to ancient Hawaiian royalty and is home to two 18-hole championship golf courses. The Royal Ka'anapali course was built in 1962 and designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., who created undulating greens and wide fairways to accent views of the Pacific Ocean and West Maui Mountains. This championship challenge has played host to such events as the Champions TOUR Ka'anapali Classic for 14 years, LPGA Kemper Cup and Shell's Wonderful World of Golf, and such legends as Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Jan Stephanson and Betsy King have competed here. Guests of the Ka'anapali Resort receive discounts on green fees at both Royal Ka'anapali and newer Ka'anapali Kai, which was extensively renovated in 2005.

Big name course - amateur operation
Booked a tee time for approx. 7:30.First problem occurred when they tried to charge us $125 after we had booked on golfnow for $99. (they did honour the 99 rate after I made an issue of it) I like to play early to ensure a less than four hour round which should not have been a problem with a wide open resort course such as this. (I am a 22 handicap and never had any trouble keeping the ball in play) Well, the round took 4 hrs and 45 minutes!!! Why? Two fivesomes were sent out ahead of fours, threes and twos. One of the foursomes had only three sets of clubs!!! Who allows this??? (not even the munis where I come from)Never a sign of a marshall anywhere on the course and a cart girl we saw only twice. For a course that normally charges around $200 a round, the level of service and effort in maintaining pace of play was abysmal. I will be taking my Hawaii golf dollar elsewhere in the future. Courses like the Dunes, Kahili, Pukalani offer better play, more interesting layouts and far better service.
Very nice
Beautiful course with many great views. Wide fairways and player friendly for intermediate golfers. Great deal if you can get it on golf now for around $100. Too expensive for the standard rack rate as you can play Kapalaua Plantation for about $15 more.
While most employees were very good, there is definitely an attitude and/or arrogance amount some.
Nice course with some great views.
People at the cashier not really friendly, might of our booking through golfnow. Other stuff very friendly and helpful. No water in the cooler. Very Good GPS system, wonderful greens and views.
Fantastic golf resort golf experience.
Wide fairways lesson need for accuracy off the tee, but widely changing hole elevations and well trapped, undulating greens provide significant challenge to any golfer. Beautiful layout along Maui Kaanapali coastline. Excellent vacation golf venue
Nice Layout
Really enjoyed playing this course. Up and down the Maui mountains, well maintained and friendly staff. Pricey if calling in direct but can find hot deals thru Golf now if you watch for them. Your TT must be flexible. We played a second round here due to that.
Front desk staff treated golf now customer equal to stray dog
the greens were nice, took a dip in the ocean while waiting for the two 4 somes in front of me. Course was easy till the winds kicked in.
Muni course for private club pricing.
Played Wailea Emerald the day before and that was a truly wonderful experience. Then went to Royal and that was a total disappointment.
Rental clubs had no grip left and course was a little boring. Able to play at a pretty good pace until we came up to a group of 5 players on 16. Thankfully we were able to join a twosome so slow down a bit. Asked the staff about this and all they could say is that they don't have any Marshall's.
Save your money for a course that's worth it or enjoy a great dinner instead. Not even worth a second consideration.
Nice resort course, great location.
I played at a $99 rate because the greens had just been aerated. I thought it was a fine resort course, but mostly uninspiring. I certainly wouldn't pay the $200+ rack rate. Loved the location... right near the Ka'anapali resorts.
Very good! Would play it again.
Beautiful views of the West Maui mountains, and the ocean as well. Difficult greens to read; as everything breaks to the ocean and quickly. Slow putting away from the ocean to the mountains. Wide open fairways. Water comes into play on the 1st, 17th and 18th holes. My wife just started playing golf and she loved it!
Great views.
A challenging, fun and rewarding experience with great views. Greens were quick and offered a read challenge. I would like to play this course again in the future.
Great course, but would not pay full price
A classic course with nice layout. Well maintained and great service from very attentive staff. Hard not to recommend playing this course, but can find better value on the island - we played mid-day for about half off rack rate and would not go back at regular rates.
Fun but dry
We were very surprised at the lack of water, food and as the couple playing with us said, restrooms. The man golfing with us said he couldn't even find a tree to hide behind. We had fun and were matched with another couple that were fun to golf with. They need to have a sign at the snack shack that let's golfer know that there is no water for the next few hours. Even the water jug was empty. We would probably not play at that course again just for the neglect factor. We were told they have refreshment carts on the Kai course. I would bring my own just in case. I was given many excuses from staff. One, " Your in Maui, everyone here is in their own world" implying they have no regard for anyone else. Two," the cart girls were bickering over which course they made the most money on, so we had no carts because certain nationalities don't spend any money on snacks! staff actually said that! So much for my review but you did ask.
Great greens
Course was in above average condition, lush, with excellent greens.
Pace of play, especially considering a noon T-time was good (4 1/4 hrs)
Great course design. Fast greens.
The Royal Course has been the host to many professional events. The course design is great and the staff is very friendly. The greens are fast and tricky. A lot of traps make shot making and course management a must. A great Maui golf experience.
A Fair Round
Yes, it's in Maui but they shove you around like a tourist. I've not been here before I have questions, so don't be rude and offer some service. The course was fine, carts were okay - good thing it was Maui and the company was good.
Over priced. Bunkers are LOW on sand. Starter staff (downstairs) are super friendly!
Because this course is in Maui and so close to Kapalua, it does suffer by comparison. That said, it's challenges are primarily the wind. It has 2 reachable par 5's and 2 unreachable par 4's (depending on wind of course#. And that really gives you an idea of how this course will challenge you. The fairways are relatively generous and in good shape #some brown spots). Greens are Hawaiin grainy...fast down, slow up, and will break with the grain significanly--and they're in good shape. The bunkers however, are in terrible shape--so much sand is missing that the felt is visible and will catch your club when you 'try' to hit out. The course is way overpriced for what you get #and can get at nearby courses#--Golf Digest simply stated that with Kapalua so close and Kaanapali's prices, why even bother #I agree#. Conversely, just 2 years ago, this course was a great deal! Green fees were around 40% less AND they offered an all-you-can-play deal for $499 #that was 7 days unlimited for BOTH courses#. It seems management simply wants to raise prices as much and as often as they can. Big turn off and the reason I won't recommend #if you can get a great golf-now deal, then definitely check out#. Staff, especially the boys who set you up and greet you after, are real characters and are the best thing aobout Kaanapali!
No let breaks
Green is tough to read. No breather holes. Must have high trajectory ball flight to score. Too expensive. There are better and prettier courses at Wailea and Kapalua for a better price.
Great experience in Maui!
The opportunity to play Royal Kaanapali was once in a lifetime. The holes are consistent throughout with a good balance of distances and difficulties. There is only water on holes 1, 17, and 18. The greens are a challenge, but everyone knows that going into it. The staff was extremely friendly and make the experience that much more enjoyable. My wife rented Nike clubs that she really liked. They provide you with a wet towel as well as dry one and they clean your clubs when you complete your round.
The golf was amazing as well as the location. It was affordable because of Golfnow and my wife and I are lucky we had the opportunity to play Royal Kaanapali.
COURSE WAS IN GREAT SHAPE
COURSE PLAYS TOUGHER THEN IT LOOKS. NOT A LOT OF WATER, BUT PLENTY OF SAND.
