Royal Ka'anapali
About
Maui's Ka'anapali Resort is built upon 1,200 acres of land home to ancient Hawaiian royalty and is home to two 18-hole championship golf courses. The Royal Ka'anapali course was built in 1962 and designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., who created undulating greens and wide fairways to accent views of the Pacific Ocean and West Maui Mountains. This championship challenge has played host to such events as the Champions TOUR Ka'anapali Classic for 14 years, LPGA Kemper Cup and Shell's Wonderful World of Golf, and such legends as Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Jan Stephanson and Betsy King have competed here. Guests of the Ka'anapali Resort receive discounts on green fees at both Royal Ka'anapali and newer Ka'anapali Kai, which was extensively renovated in 2005.

Customer service
I've played this course a lot and don't remember the
staff in the pro shop so moosh, the 2 girls behind the counter...no personality what so ever....no hi how are you,,how's your day going so far,,, have a good round,,,
nothing just give me your money, the worst customer service i have ever seen there!!!
A terrific day in Paradise
This was as enjoyable of a round as I've had in a long, long time. A top-10 experience because of so many factors.
For starters, we played with with director of instruction - David Havens. He was awesome. So helpful, so friendly and a great way to play with course because of his helpful knowledge of the place.
The greens were spectacular. And I don't say that lightly. They were as good as anything I've seen, maybe ever. They were so pure and nearly perfect. You knew you'd always get a true roll.
The layout is great too. You can spray it a little off the tee and get away with it, but the holes are a great collection and the par 3s are particularly memorable. When/if you hit it in the water on the 17th hole (it's a real possibility) make sure you take a look at the sign that's in the pond. Classic.
Take some time to enjoy the views of the ocean. You can see if from almost everywhere on the course.
Good resort track
Expect to pay resort prices (esp for Maui)! That being said, the course is in good shape. No issues with staff or pace of play
bring your coupons and discounts otherwise not worth it
unfriendly staff (and that buggs me); no walking aloud; slow play even for midweek and the Marshals did nothing about it; golf range is lousy (mats, irons only, lousy staff); on to the game..fairways are WIDE OPEN with the exception of one; if you stay at a Westin Resort discounts and coupons available otherwise it's not worth the regular rate. Also bring your clubs and water bottle otherwise you will get fees here and fees there. After 18 they do give you a nicely cooled towel but I just can't see paying $4.50 for a 6oz beer at the bar.
Slow play and not very memorable course
I got a really good deal on an internet tee time website so I played this course or a greatly reduced rate. It is not worth the full rate. The course was pretty challenging with some of the holes being fairly long and we had a strong breeze and rain on some. There were not any really memorable holes. Number 5 goes by the beach and number 17 is a par 3 over water. Overall it's an ok course that I would play again but not for the normal rate. The pace was also incredibly slow since there was a birthday outing of 40 people in front of us. The ranger said they were all slow and he couldn't do anything. I finished before dark so I was not too upset but there were a lot of people behind me that I'm sure didn't finish. Kapalua courses are MUCH nicer and can get on Bay for about the same rate.
Original Robert Trent Jones Old-Style Tract in Excellent Condition
Came back here to play after 12 years or so. Still an excellent test of golf even with relatively moderate trade wind conditions. Found a good deal on Golfnow, and then got another discount when we showed up at the course: $ 60 green fee which is very reasonable for a course of this standing. The back nine par is 34, with 7 par 4's and 2 par 3's, and the front nine par is 37 with 3 par 5's and 2 par 3's. I can't remember the last time I played at any course with this unusual break-down of holes. The ocean views are excellent and you can't beat the ideal location. Also nice to play on Bermuda-type greens with grain.
punched greens
heavy wind made track extra difficult. greens had been punched 10 days before but had not healed. fairways in good condition. plenty of callenge. great views.
Beautiful course in great condition
This is a great course with great features. The greens are smooth and a good speed and the fairways are also in great shape. It's pretty challenging and their is a good amount of water.
Really fun course, and well priced for the area
The Royal course provided a fun golf experience, with minimal waiting. The course doesn't compare to the Bay or Plantation courses in the area, but is also much more reasonably priced to play. The club house is extremely friendly, and the course is well-maintained. Would definitely recommend it to others.
The course has great views.
The course has great views and the course was in great shape. The greens were running very fast and course was in excellent shape. The afternoon winds make the course very hard to make good shots. The price to play is a little high. Next time I would play the bay course at Kapalua it's better for your dollar.
great eleavation changes
would definitely play again, need local knowledge of the greens
Maybe it's the weather but...
Course was in good shape and was fun to play but... I'd play The Dunes twice and have dinner or spend the extra money for Kapalua before returning to Kanapali. Cigars were overpriced, sold me a $3 bic lighter... just not a value play.
A Royal Treat
We played three rounds at Royal Kaanapali during our one week stay in Maui. I recommend this course for a variety of reasons including condition, history, playability and incredible scenery. I'm 55 with a 8.0 handicap. Playing the white tees made the most sense as it afforded me an opportunity to reach longer par 4's in regulation. I spent some time in bunkers, but they are exceptionally maintained. The entire course was well groomed. Beverage service was timely and friendly. I want to go back to Maui, and I especially look forward to a return trip to Royal Kaanapali
overpriced but still fun
Put this course anywhere but Hawaii and its half the price. Over $200 and you need to pay extra for range balls and hit off mats, really...
Course was OK, typical resort course layout. Generous fairways, only the undulations and grain on the greens and wind protect par. Friendly staff.
We had fun.
Great Course with Top Notch Staff
Course was in excellent condition. Greens ran perfect. Entire staff was great. Very friendly and helpful. I would definately play here again. The entire experience was perfect.
Beautiful great views long and challenging
We had to keep carts on the paths due to heavy rain on Dec 23 and 24 so played even longer and slower...but we had fun just the same
Kaanapali Royal
We played Ka'anapali Royal and were not very impressed. Driving range was mediocre at best, hitting off mats, range balls must have been years old. Staff was nice and helpful. Course is routed through subdivision, so scenery compromised. We played Wailea Gold today and it was worth every penny. Highly recommend!
A good experience...
I played the Royal Kaanapali Course. I came on as a single and was partnered with 2 guys from Kansas City who were very nice. Overall the course was fun to play, it wasn't so hard that it wasn't fun. The staff was polite and helpful. The course was in decent shape, but I don't think it's necessarily worth the greens fees they charge. Of course everything is more expensive in Hawaii. The set of Nike rental clubs was good also. I just played the Plantation Course in Kapalua for roughly the same price. I booked a twilight tee time (1:20pm). I got there early and went out an hour early. They rent you Titleist AP1s/913 D2 Driver/Scotty Cameron putter. The greens are sick though and it's a challenging course. The Staff there was above and beyond friendly. So in my opinion the Royal Kaanapali is a good, fun course, but if you can only play one course in Maui, play the Plantation Course
Fast play
We were prepared to play a 4 to 5 hour round like
we have encountered at many resort courses
and were surprised at how fast the speed of play
was. We were able to finish a round in just under
4 hours.
The staff in all of their departments were friendly
and efficient, We would highly recommend this
course to our friends and visitors alike.
