Settler's Hill Golf Course
About
Settler's Hill Golf Course sprawls across a diverse landscape that ranges from windswept highlands to mature woodlands. The course actually sits on the site of a former landfill but you would never be able to tell with its rolling topography that has become its signature characteristic. When playing, you'll be transported from the Scottish highlands to the forests of northern Michigan without even having to leave Chicagoland. Links-style and parkland holes are interspersed with water to create a test of your skills you won't soon forget. The greens have their interesting quirks and they are framed with deep bunkers and the rolling fairways demand accuracy. Besides the challenging round and affordable rates, Settler's Hill Golf Course's west-central location in Batavia near the Fox River also makes it a popular choice for meeting friends for a round.

Typical pin/cup and green condition Photo submitted by Morgan2861 on 09/14/2016
Poor conditions
I’ve played this course many times throughout the years. After the redesign thought it would be great. The course is in terrible shape. I’d expect at least two years until it’s even close to being decent.
Don't Play Here
Course was in horrible condition. Some fairways were literal dirt and the greens were really beat up. I could not get my tee in the ground on multiple tee boxes. Also, the starters were cranky and rude. 0 Stars. Do not come here, especially for the price.
On of the best tracks to help improve your game.
I have been playing settlers pretty consistently. I have to utilize my whole bag regularly. This course helps you learn your shots. Your strategy for attacking the pin. While also being just plain fun and beautiful. They have improved the greens and fairways this year and are working on some minor blemishes… (out of current mgmt control) if you are looking for a fun time at an ok price come here.
Great Round
Had a great Round at Settlers Hill most courses were still without carts but they have had carts the whole time. The new layout is great! Great Staff
Fun New Layout
First time this year at Settler's Hill and I really enjoyed the new layout. The first and ninth hole now are near the club house which makes perfect sense.
My 2nd review of Settler's in 19 days
I had a more critical eye this time around.
- Tee areas were well worn.
- Not much spacing between black and white and yellow tees...specially whites an yellows.
- Fringe of all greens crammed with clover.
- edges of greens have many ant hills.
- Fairways were unevenly bare\not bare.
- rough was more weeds than grass.
-#5 should probably be made back into a par 5 moving the tee-off area back could do it.
- Bunkers were in decent shape.
-Greens were running a bit yet would hold a shot and I like that.
- Fairways were running a bit that's good.
- 9:16 tee time and the round took 5+ hours - that had to do as much with our 4 some as pace of play.
All and all, with the rains and heat, this course should be in better shape.
I'll go back to my original review from a few years ago. They never should have opened when they did after the remodel. They should have waited another year...but could they afford to lose another year's revenue?
Underrated Course
Fun course to play. Some really interesting par 3 and par 5 holes. I would highly recommend.
Tough Shape
I live right by the course and have played it probably 30 times over the past 15 years. I had hope that after the renovation things would change. No, we are back to a dog-track. The course layout has potential but the lack of maintenance puts a damper on any round played here. Years ago I suggested a “Golfers, please fix your ballmarks” sign. That never happened and still, no one seems to fix ballmarks. The price is not worth the experience.
Blind Shots and Hills
There are a lot of blind shots and then swells and hills. Very difficult to know where your ball went.
If you’re not dead accurate, can be an unenjoyable round.
With all of the blind shots, and no GPS carts, you will need to use a GPS app.
Probably a course than becomes more enjoyable the more you play it and know where to hit it, but very tough on the first round.
Better Than Expected.
I was able to play this course as a first look at the renovation in 2022.
It was a goat ranch and should not have been opened for play then.
I vowed never to play it again, it was so bad.
Today ? Just WOW. ! It's matured.
There is a newer routing that fits.
The grounds are mature...there aren't very many thin spots.
The rough is challenging.
The bunkers are playable. Drainage is outstanding (it had just rained) and the greens ran a little bit.
They changed management companies.
I don't know if that change had anything to do with the improvements but improvements there were.
They were going to build a new clubhouse...don't know if that is still the plan.
Go play it.
It's worth the effort and the normal rate.
Improving!
played this course most recently on 5-27-26. last time i played it was in 2024 & it felt like an entirely different course. not only because they changed the layout, but because they have made such big improvements in the conditions. walked 18 at 3:30 & i paid $32. may not be worth $75 on weekends yet, but absolutely worth a week day round
Needs work
Three years after revamping the course there are still many areas where there is no grass. Just hard baked dirt. Even some of the greens have patches of dirt. The layout and hills are awesome and fun. The greens are tough with lots of break. If there was better grass coverage this course would be tops in the area.
