Settler's Hill Golf Course

About
Settler's Hill Golf Course sprawls across a diverse landscape that ranges from windswept highlands to mature woodlands. The course actually sits on the site of a former landfill but you would never be able to tell with its rolling topography that has become its signature characteristic. When playing, you'll be transported from the Scottish highlands to the forests of northern Michigan without even having to leave Chicagoland. Links-style and parkland holes are interspersed with water to create a test of your skills you won't soon forget. The greens have their interesting quirks and they are framed with deep bunkers and the rolling fairways demand accuracy. Besides the challenging round and affordable rates, Settler's Hill Golf Course's west-central location in Batavia near the Fox River also makes it a popular choice for meeting friends for a round.

Good Layout / Bad Conditions
The entire course, tee boxes, fairways, greens and rough are in poor shape. It’s as if they have no water to use on the course. Rough is very spotty with large bare spots. Greens are extremely firm with a vast amount of ball marks. Fairways are just ok but very firm and little thatch. Better bring a hammer to put your T’s in the ground on the t boxes. One good thing are the trap conditions. They were raked and the sane was good.
I would avoid playing this course until the conditions improve dramatically.
Terrible Course Conditions
Played twilight rates with cart on Labor Day.
-On course concession stand was closed.
-Saw the drink cart leave the course at 2pm, never appeared again.
-A significant number of the range balls were cracked or full broken.
-Tee boxes, fairways, and greens were incredibly hard. Almost broke multiple plastic tees just trying to place it in the ground and had to try multiple spots to find any soft ground.
-Expect to play shots at least 20 yards short to account for cart path-like bounces on the fairways and greens.
-Tee boxes , fairways, and greens in very rough shape (see photos).
-Almost every single hole was a straight-shot. Very little variety.
-Friendly staff.
Spend time and money elsewhere
I’ve played Settler’s Hill quite a bit in the past and never seen the course in this bad of shape. The tee boxes and greens were pretty terrible on a lot of holes. I noticed pin placements based on cutouts were in the same general area which doesn’t help. There’s comparable courses in the area that are in better condition.
Settlers Hill
Settlers has a terrific layout but shame on the golfers who play this course and do not fix their ball-marks or sand their divots. Some of the visit views are great. After three years, the fairways are still thinly covered and could use a good aeration and over seeding.
Good challenge for all levels of play.
Hittem straight
Settlers Hill is a fun golf course. The tee boxes and greens are a little on the used side but overall the course is in great condition. Bring some water, unless you went in the clubhouse, things are scarce. There aren’t any ball washers on the tee boxes. I will definitely play here again.
Bring your A game as there is elevation all over this course
Good and Bad
Positives: really fun layout with lots of hills, elevation changes and water.
Cons: this is my second time playing here and the course was in really really bad shape. To the point of not being able to physically put a Tee into the tee box. Greens were also rough.
Overall a nice course we previously played early in the season has really been hurt by such poor conditions. For the price ($70) there are plenty of better options.
needs some attention
The course layout itself is challenging, scenic and fun to play. You have to pay attention.
A few things that would enhance the experience.
1. the entrance from the clubhouse to the first tee and range is like driving thru a construction site and it is well over 700 yards from the clubhouse to the first tee. Mud, gravel, lack of signage.
2. holes 1,9,10 and 18 converge in a big bowl and there is not a single tree, bush, umbrella or shelter structure to to protect golfers from rain, sun, lightning, etc. if needed. This area is muddy, unkept and not very appealing, as well as a lot of golf balls flying around that is dangerous.
2.5 No place to get eats or drinks at the first 9 hole turnaround. Come on guys, this is a no brainer to make money and to keep golfers hydrated, happy and not hungry.
3. The greens have some sort of fungus and black patches that are tough to putt on and the areas around the green are not kept up consistently.
4. A few of the holes need some yardage clues on the tee to know where the blind creek or pond is located off the tee. Don't make paying golfers guess where to it. Markers or notes on the tee will speed up play and improve the experience. A few blind tee shots as well could use a bell or better site lines to know if the group ahead is clear.
4. Having said all this, I loved the layout and it's fun to play. Starter Jim was helpful with a few tips, but hard to remember it all in learning about it a few minutes before.
5. The scorecard paper is not friendly to accept pencil writing. Difficult to see the marks with semi gloss paper.
Hope Kane County chiefs can budget some more money into this course as it has great bones.
Good value but….
The course has some fun and challenging holes. It’s rather unique, with its hilly terrain. Unfortunately, the course is quite beat up. The tee boxes and greens are rough. It needs some attention to return to former glory. The price is more than fair however.
Greens and tee boxes are the 2 most important things in golf I have golfed here as long as this has been there To me this course is ready for a new vision if don’t work on make it snow Hills The only time I play is if I don’t have to pay The staff were pretty good If these courses Represent Kane County Close them rebuild them Look at the reviews That’s why your 3 star should actually be 1.5 stars Kane county you need to play the courses and see what you Think
Settlers Hill Aug/2025
I played Sunday 8/4/2025 at the pace of a snail 🐌 . Which messed with my game. Also the new layout on the front 9 is awful. I don’t like it. I felt cramped. Honestly 2/5 stars is generous. The greens are hard dirt & not kept well & super fast. Just an honey personal experience review.
This course could be a gem.
Layout is great. The terrain is varied which makes it a little technical. Being on a landfilll, there is some elevation at times and the when the weather has been dry for a while, the ball rolls and rolls.
Staff is very nice which feels like fresh air these days. Pace of play was terrible (3 hours for 9 holes 😳)… but there is a serious need for maintenance. This tee box on the 2nd par 3 is a disgrace…( staff will know what I am talking about)…
In the end, it’s a fun course which I will definitely play again.
A Mighty Fall From Grace
I've been playing this course on and off since the mid-90's and I hate to say it, but it has never been in worse condition. It really took a dive since the redesign a few years ago. The tee boxes are beat-up and a few of the par-3 holes had little-to-no grass (looking at you #6). The greens were soft, but not receptive with thinning grass. Weeds and bare patches with pebbles can be found on the fairways and rough. To make it worse, the round was almost 6 hours while we waited on most shots. Their Management & Greenskeeping teams should be embarrassed about the overall condition. Sorry, but buyer beware.
