Settler's Hill Golf Course
About
Settler's Hill Golf Course sprawls across a diverse landscape that ranges from windswept highlands to mature woodlands. The course actually sits on the site of a former landfill but you would never be able to tell with its rolling topography that has become its signature characteristic. When playing, you'll be transported from the Scottish highlands to the forests of northern Michigan without even having to leave Chicagoland. Links-style and parkland holes are interspersed with water to create a test of your skills you won't soon forget. The greens have their interesting quirks and they are framed with deep bunkers and the rolling fairways demand accuracy. Besides the challenging round and affordable rates, Settler's Hill Golf Course's west-central location in Batavia near the Fox River also makes it a popular choice for meeting friends for a round.

Opened Too Early
This course recently reopened, and it is not near ready. There is very little grass on the tees, in the fairways, or around the greens. The greens are beat up and roll very slowly, as they have a great deal of sand. Was excited to play this course for the first time and came away extremely disappointed. There is a lot of work to be done before I would return.
They took a fun course and ruined it
I am a long time Settlers Hill player. It was one of my favorite courses to play. It had greens that rolled well and had character. It was kept up reasonably well and was a good value for the money. Unfortunately, none of this is true any longer. I was VERY disappointed with its current condition. Fairways were in poor shape with weeds and bare spots everywhere. The greens were VERY slow (with lack of grass in areas) and flattened out big time. If this isn't enough, they removed the iconic old #16 par three completely! What kind of a bozo architect does that??
I used to play this course 5/6 times a year, but sadly it looks like a one time a year at most now. Hopefully they will try to improve the greens and fairways and folks will just have to get used to the changes.
Bottom line is I would not recommend it to anyone in its current condition.
You must either not play much golf or you are the bozo architect that designed this mess. This course was in just awful condition and should not even be open for play.
Not ready for prime time
It’s a soft opening but this course is not ready for play. Start on 18? Greens are slower than putting on shag carpet. Needs some care, better signage and there is virtually no clubhouse. Carts without GPS.
Not much different
The “new “ Settlers Hill is not much different than the old one. Par 3’s we’re different (except #3) and a few other tee boxes moved, but pretty much the same layout as before for the rest of the holes. Fairways were okay, but greens were super slow. Huge amount of crabgrass everywhere..
Underwhelming Renovation / Extremely Disappointed
Whomever designed the renovation and whomever thought it was a good idea/approved the plan should be blackballed from golf. They turned a fun course into a boring mess. Plus it should have stayed closed the rest of this season. It's not ready for play. Slow sandpaper greens....some areas of them still need grow in. All of the greens were blown up and all of them have been softened to the point of a snooze. No imagination is required to play them - the course lost it's soul. It's like playing the same potato chip ten plus times. Fairways are spongy with little roll out and they don't even have divot mix on the cart to fill them....so by season end this place will be destroyed. Several wet areas also need to be roped off in the fairways....and there are no ropes up at all so carts are driving all over the place.
If you played here prior to the renovation here's the skinny - eventually a new clubhouse will be built behind what was the 1st green. There's a driving range and a large practice green near there (neither are open yet) and you still start from the old 1st tee (which will eventually be the 18th hole once the clubhouse is completed. The former 6th hole (now the 5th) was a devil of a Par 5. They ruined it by making it a Par 4 and you tee off where the senior tees/ladies tee were. Most will be unable to reach the green in 2 shots.....and the green is still over the creek playing 420 yards. The landing area for your drive is very small (play to the left side because it will roll out right and you'll likely have a down hill lie. Really dumb. Next hole a new par 3 was built playing over a hazard to green on a ridge/shelf. It's land just to the right of where the 7th tee is (now 6th) is. It's a picturesque Par 3 a bit more than the old downhill one but the tee boxes on this new hole are way too small....the white tee box will be all dirt by the end of the season. It's chewed up already and the course hasn't been open a week! On the Par 5 9th (now 8th hole) they filled in the creek that you had to play over for your 2nd shot....all fairway now. The Par 5 11th(now 10th hole) they moved the tee boxes to the other side of the pond.....so the huge oak trees on the right you have to skirt to keep your ball in play. They did clear out some trees to make your 2nd shot more playable but the green now pretty much a flat pancake. It still backed up play yesterday and when the course back nine does start out with this hole - it will make the turn when crowded a real mess with a long 20 minute wait to continue your round. The new tee boxes built in the hillside of the 12th (now 11th hole) make the length of this hole too long for most to reach in two from the white tees. (there are now 5 par 4's that play very long and required me to hit 5 wood or 3 wood approach shots...two of those I doubt I'll ever hit the green in regulation). The old 16th (now 15th) a wonderful severe downhill par 3 toward the radio towers was blown up! The tee shot in it's place is a completely boring 140/150 slightly uphill Par 3 again with ridiculously small tees boxes so they'll be dirt or uneven divot messes within a season or two. Tees for the Par 5 17th (now 16th) are built into the hillside changing the angle so fairway and pond is dead straight in front of you versus pond being towards your right.. These tees would have been okay except the pond is 200-220 yards down hill so a layup is required for many - that's a really good design improvement don't you think???....the former tee shot you could most times launch a full drive.
Not much creativity is required to putt or chip to these greens...a real lack of tiers or specific areas to hit to. It's almost if the designer/shaper wanted to lull you to sleep and went too far in the opposite direction.. Greens way too benign in comparison to what were there originally. A crying shame.
Front nine plays long....after the 11th all back nine Par 4's and the Par 5 play require too short popcorn placed tee shots.......and gee what a finish it you'll have with the downhill driveable for some 1st hole becoming your 18th. So you may be "treated" to another wait on your very last hole with groups waiting for this green to clear.
Play it once and see what you think. I can't recommend it for play now because the conditioning bumpy slow greens do not justify the cost. I enjoyed the old course and it's difficult to enjoy the renovation because there was no creativity - it feels phoned in. A lot of other folks will likely be disappointed. A bare bones boneheaded soft open.
When fully grown in I doubt my opinion will improve much. What was a fun quirky muni will now be just your average muni....nothing special.....
We saw the beverage cart once on the 3rd hole. Never saw her again. There's no water on the course so make sure you stock up. All light beers in the clubhouse (nothing overly tasty).....no food service just light snacks. All the employees friendly pleasant/helpful.
Very disappointed with new version of course
Very disappointed with new version of course. I was expecting a lot more than four holes being redone and a new clubhouse that is not even built yet being where the second hole currently is. This course is very penal even for a decent golfer if you stray of the fairway. The only good thing I can say right now is that at some point in the future you’ll be able to play nine holes there and go to your car or have a beer afterwards without having a play 13 like you did before.
Opening letdown
We were excited to see the updates and improvements.
They improved many of the tee boxes, and sand traps.
Greens must be new base and they were furry. I could not hit it hard enough on most putts. Fairways needed some love. The thing that really seemed bad to us was not even a cart person on the course the entire day. It was hot and really humid Friday and we needed liquids. After 9 we drove back to barn clubhouse to get liquids and food. (Teed off around 10:30). No food. Asked for ice. No ice. Ice machine on back order. What???? We did know it was opening right? Maybe bags of ice from a store? We survived and will give it another chance but felt a bit more effort and care towards its customers would have been nice.
Should’ve Stayed Closed
Extremely disappointed in the course condition after being closed for renovations for a year and a half. Crab grass everywhere around the greens. Dead patches all over the greens (that aren’t new greens). NO water available on any tee boxes - kind of important when it’s 95 degrees. NO beverage cart. At least setup a grill and a stand with some drinks at the will-be halfway house. Pace - slower than molasses in January. Truly felt taken advantage of paying full price. Should’ve just stayed closed all season if it’s not ready instead of trying to squeeze a few dollars out and destroying any loyalty players had to the course. Get it together.
Nomore
Very disappointing, not in great shape , staff very nice but not a fun day . Won’t be back
Only 9 holes available
Booked on golfnow for 18 holes with a cart and got to the course only to find out only 9 holes of the course is available because the course is starting construction on some holes.
Settlers Hill
Tee boxes and greens in very rough sharpe. Course layout has changed since I played there last. Staff was very friendly.
FYI your gps wasn’t even remotely correct- two of the holes are brand new and not mapped. Why are 28 of your 35 reviews 5 stars? If you rate this 5 stars please go play Hickory Hills….you’ll 6 star that course!
