Settler's Hill Golf Course
About
Settler's Hill Golf Course sprawls across a diverse landscape that ranges from windswept highlands to mature woodlands. The course actually sits on the site of a former landfill but you would never be able to tell with its rolling topography that has become its signature characteristic. When playing, you'll be transported from the Scottish highlands to the forests of northern Michigan without even having to leave Chicagoland. Links-style and parkland holes are interspersed with water to create a test of your skills you won't soon forget. The greens have their interesting quirks and they are framed with deep bunkers and the rolling fairways demand accuracy. Besides the challenging round and affordable rates, Settler's Hill Golf Course's west-central location in Batavia near the Fox River also makes it a popular choice for meeting friends for a round.

Lucked out with a 3pm tee time.....and no one else had teed off for a 1/2 hour
See my reviews of 9/2/19 and 6/24/18. Normally this 5.5 hour wait around slog.....we were lucky and our 4-some played with no one around in well under 4 hours. So our group had a nice day and great time.....others behind us not so much because the group the teed off directly behind us was never seen by us again and finished well over 40 minutes after us.....We were so far ahead with no one around that I lost $5 betting one of my buddies he couldn't catch a fish in the pond on 17. He caught one within 3 minutes!! Conditions always generally sketchy at Settler's - greens were so over watered (they always are and feel like sponges) tons of indentations from others shoes around cups, un repaired ball marks. ripped up tee boxes and water/dirt in most if not all of the traps. Folks in the clubhouse can be a tad "surly" sometimes, had a bad ranger experience a couple years ago too........ the beverage gal was very nice. Reluctantly recommend only if not crowded....an interesting routing with good challenges but standing around waiting watching less skilled lose golf balls doesn't help or flow or score when you're forced to do so. $37 w/cart was an okay rate anything more than that is not a very good value for your golf buck.
Challenging Putts
The course was in pretty good shape but many of the tee boxes were in poor condition. They also need to work on the cart paths, which were also in poor condition. This is a fun course to play but you would never want to walk it. The greens are tough. They have many breaks and ups and downs so even if you reach in regulation be prepared to have a share of 3 putts.
Disappointed
The course was in horrible shape and it is like they do not take care of anything. Cart paths were horrible greens were bad and it just was in very bad shape
Above Average, but Pricey
Played this course for the second time and had a great time. Course is tough with a few holes where placement is absolutely necessary. Had a few lost balls to the woods/water. Good variety of shots required for each hole - some narrow fairways, some larger, some water holes, some tough greens/pin placements. The only issue I noticed was that the tee boxes were in awful condition. Very few spots that weren’t completely decimated by divots. In sum, good course, but not sure it’s worth $65 per round.
Wet areas throughout
There were many wet areas throughout the round around greens and tee box. Sprinkler system running in middle of fairway as well. Disappointing that we were force to share golf carts when a group behind us had separate carts.
Challenging track
Some very pretty holes and lots of different kinds of terrain. Lots of challenge with lots of trees and huge rough areas force you to be accurate. Some hidden hazards for a first time player that turned good shots into lost balls. Some very beaten up tee boxes and areas on some fairways and greens where players aren’t repairing divots and ball marks. But overall an interesting course to try out.
Not worth it
Extremely slow play with no rangers out, course condition was below average with tons of green marks and dead grass, not even close to worth the money to play here
Don’t waste your money
Course is in awful shape and it’s $45 on a weekday. So weekends I couldn’t fathom. No rangers like always and the staff could care less about the pace of play. 4:45 minutes for a 2sum. This course is an absolute joke!!!!!!!
Always beautiful and challenging.
This course is fun and challenging, can't wait to play again.
Ranger annoyance
Group in front of us was slow and instead of telling them to skip a hole told us to keep up with pace of play. Cash only drink cart, but nice layout. Bad sand traps, would be softer hitting from cart path and greens were bumpy with parts burnt out.
Terrible Experience
this course and its staff is errible. The staff at pro shop basically went out oh his way to make sure we didnt have a good time. The one star is because zero was not available
An OK public course charging elite course fees
I was only able to pay for greens fees online, so when I arrived for my twosome I expected to pay for a cart, which is $18. They made me pay for two carts ($36) and then said that they didn't have enough carts to actually give us two (in violation of COVID rules).
The course was not in good condition. Despite being up on a hill, there was standing water in most of the sand traps, on the tee boxes, in the fairways, and on some of the greens. Despite being so wet, the greens were full of bare spots, weeds, and extremely thin areas, showing that they are just not maintaining it well.
The course is challenging if you cannot hit straight. There is a small amount of rough outside the fairways, and then it quickly converts to chest-high weeds, making it impossible to find any ball not hit on the fairway.
The carts are old, gasoline engine, beat up models with no GPS or any amenities. The cart paths are blacktop that is so broken and settled that your cart hits huge bumps constantly that jar you and spill your drinks. But you must stay on these paths since the fairways are mostly standing water.
This would not be a bad course to play for $20. It has an interesting layout and some nice features. But it is not a $65 course.
Horrible
Upon arrival was charged $18.00 as they said I paid you for walking only. Don’t ever remember a hot deal being walking only. Paying $86.00 for that course is outrageous. Was behind 2 young guys who spend more time talking than playing. Most discourteous golfers ever! I am 82 & my wife is 76. Should never have to wait on anyone. All in all one of our worst days of golf ever! Russell & Mary Ann Feurer
Below Poor Conditions
Course is in awful shape, and Ranger Tough guy worried about pace of play when nobody is waiting. Staff was less than friendly... ive played here plenty they have potential as the layout us great but the course and staff are far below poor. One Star was only given because 0 stars was not an option.
