Settler's Hill Golf Course
About
Settler's Hill Golf Course sprawls across a diverse landscape that ranges from windswept highlands to mature woodlands. The course actually sits on the site of a former landfill but you would never be able to tell with its rolling topography that has become its signature characteristic. When playing, you'll be transported from the Scottish highlands to the forests of northern Michigan without even having to leave Chicagoland. Links-style and parkland holes are interspersed with water to create a test of your skills you won't soon forget. The greens have their interesting quirks and they are framed with deep bunkers and the rolling fairways demand accuracy. Besides the challenging round and affordable rates, Settler's Hill Golf Course's west-central location in Batavia near the Fox River also makes it a popular choice for meeting friends for a round.

Beautiful views, great piece of land
Greens are very hilly, and there is lots of trouble - trees, sand, water, fescue and narrow fairways. Starter told us that out of over 2000 par 5s in the Chicago area, hole number 11 is ranked 2nd toughest. It played like that. Playing this course is a real treat, but bring your A game.
Challenging course ruined by poor staff
Had heard from a family member that this was a fun, challenging course with a lot of variety in the play. That holds true, as it was a course with many difficult holes and a lot of different looking holes. But, a nice beautiful summer day was marred by the rude staff that my partner and I were met with almost immediately as we entered the club house.
We paid, and were assigned a cart by a woman at the front counter. As we got into the cart, a cart boy scolded us and told us customer were not allowed to use that cart. Very rude. But that wasn't it, the starter rushed 3 groups along back-to-back-to-back without any rhyme or reason as it was a slow weekday. We specifically asked if we could be split up, and we were told that they were unable to grant our request, or even go to the back of the line (my partner and I are a slower pace player). Rushed the first 3 holes, we decided to split up from the better, faster players we were paired with.
The rest of the day was tainted by the two unfortunate experiences with the cart boy and starter. Unfortunately I will not be playing at this course again. I'd rather drive 10 minutes down the street to Phesant Run or St. Andrews, where I've been treated with nothing but respect.
Excellent Course for the Value
Fun and challenging course to play. Lots of interesting holes and elevation changes. Pace of play was good, A little over 4 hours for foursome. Would come back and play again.
Above average
I would definitely play here again this year hopefully.
Everything you need in a course
Great layout fun challenging holes at each tee box , if the winds up bring your A game you will definetly need it, this course is absolutely on my top 5
Fun course
Settlers Hill is an interesting and fun course to play. There are some really beautiful holes. Good value, don't expect to much by way of amenities though.
Very good public course
The designers did an excellent job of creating an interesting and varied course for the average golfer. Built partially on land reclaimed from a garbage dump, the elevation changes are quite surprising for a course in the plains of the Midwest. The par 5's are really hard for a bogey-golfer like me, and the par 3's are quite unusual -- most feature a big elevation change. The one rub on the course design I have is that there are a lot of 350-yard par 4's.
I played this course once before when the weather was not perfect (in 2006?). It was hot and dry and the wind was coming off of the (active) garbage dump beside which this course sits. This led to bad smells and terrible dust. But with good weather (clear skies, light winds, 80F), this is a good little course.
Probably not good for walkers--the distance between holes was somewhat longer than normal.
If you can get a good deal (like my $35 with cart from GolfNow.com), and the dump is not stinking, it is worth your golfing dollar.
This course is a sleeper.
Very nice layout ,great pace of play, will put it on our list for regular courses to play. Very well maintained, very tricky greens, fast and true.
Beautiful and challenging course
First time playing here and was definitely suprised. The course was wife open (was told that wasn't the standard) and got our round finished in 4 hours. The course itself was well maintained and the views were beautiful. A lot of challenging holes and layouts you don't see around the area. The starter was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. He stopped in to talk with us on 3 seperate occasions.
Diverse and unique
It's taken me 3 rounds to understand this course a little better. 3 or 4 downward elevation holes, 3 or 4 upward elevation holes. 3 or 4 Western Illinois prairie holes. 3 or 4 holes tight and tree lined. 3 or 4 water holes. The holes go all 4 directions and back using the prairie winds accordingly. The very back blue tees are significantly back of the whites who at slope 126 are a tough test. I'm beginning to really like this track.
course was in good shape with recent rains
Good shape terrible pace of play was cart path only due to recent heavy rains
Staff Lacks People Skills
Staff not very friendly. Corse lacks bathroom facilities and no drinking water on the corse. Corse is definitely not for beginners, and there is no dress code. Guy playing in a sleeveless t-shirt.
great course
Great course great shape! This course is challenging yet forgiving the greens were very soft but rolled well. Can never get tired golfing this course hole 11 kills me every time but still fun.
Great Experience
Got a great deal to play this course. There was heavy rain prior to our tee time, so the course was wet and carts were path only. On back nine, a grounds person stopped us to say we could take carts 90 degrees. Overall, I could not ask for a better experience, both with booking thru gold now and execution of the deal by course. Course being wet is the only reason why rated only good.
Well maintained
The pace of the round wasnt the fastest but the course was very well maintained. Only on one hole could I complain about the sand traps (I saw most of them) greens were fast but very nice.
Course in great shape
This course has always had a lot of character, with an interesting mix of holes that will challenge your whole game (including #11-one of the best holes anywhere).
What was different this time is that the greens are perfect. Of the 20-25 courses I've played this year, These are near the top of the list, which is abnormal for a course that doesn't regularly charge $80 and up. Many muni courses have a number of diseased greens due to the harsh Winter-not this place.
Good course for the price
Nice challenging course with really good price. Green was a little slow but smooth. I used to play here a lot and remember the green to be faster.
Terrible Experience
Absolutely terrible experience. The slowest round of golf. Played 13 holes in 4 1/2 hours. When mentioned to the ranger he did nothing about the 4 some ahead of us while I had a single teenager constantly hitting into us.
Course Good, Way Too Slow
Went out on a Friday afternoon and didn't expect to play fast, but pace of play was even worse than expected. At 3 hours and 45 minutes, we picked up and left at hole 14. I like the course, but they really need to push play along.
We've deside to come back again for sure.
We want to comeback again for improve the game from last game.
