Good course
This is a good course to play if your the avg to above avg golfer. Good mix of difficulty to play.
Awesome spot to golf with friends
Staff was incredible. Course was fun. Will definitely be back
Players didn’t have any golf etiquette
On most of the holes I played someone from another hole hit the ball on my fairway, and blindly drive up on my fairway when I’m about to tee off and take 10 minutes to find the ball then take 5 practice swings before hitting the ball, this happened more than once with more than one group, but the starter was really nice the course was very simple it was open and hard to loses balls. Overall I think it would be a good place for someone who is new to golf but if you want a challenge I would go somewhere else
Not too bad
I played this course many years ago when I lived in Hickory Hills. I started playing other courses in the area that were in better shape after we moved. I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun it was to play this course yesterday. Yes there are improvements needed but I would say that the negative reviews at this point are unwarranted. The greens are in good condition, no worse or better than other courses in the area. The fairways could use some attention as there are bare spots and the grass is in varying condition. I took the liberty a couple times to move my ball as I felt that I was in the fairway and I should have a better lie, but overall the fairways weren’t that bad. The rough was cut short enough that you could find your ball if you took note of where your ball landed. If you are a slicer or hooker you will be in the woods a lot so this may not be a course for you.
Other reviewers said that they are working to improve the course . I hope this is true because this could be a real gem. Unfortunately with several courses up for sale in the area this could become a crowded course, especially if they make a lot of improvements.
Bottom line I would recommend this course, just don’t expect conditions you would find at higher end venues, but an enjoyable round regardless.
And old classic
They are making some repairs and look to be bringing this old classic back to life. I have been playing this course since I was a kid so I am partial to it but I love the hills and elevated tees and greens. Very unique holes. Tee boxes haven't been in great shape but they were better yesterday. I hope they keep trying to repair the greens and tee boxes. Outside of that, for the price, this course is super fun and different for Chicagoland. If you catch a hot deal on the app I think it's worth the 29 bucks for sure.
Rolling fairways and elevated greens. Very tough. Green we’re in good condition for this time of year. Elevated tees were nice, but about a third of the holes had very tight driving chutes, with trees overhanging the driving corridor.
Elevate your game
I’ve made it my goal to visit nearby golf courses that I’ve not yet played. Hickory Hills Country Club was a surprise indeed. Let’s begin with dramatic elevation changes and the shot values that result.
The South course boasts elevated tees that fire down into fairly broad landing areas. Many of the approach shots are uphill, and a few require curvature on your approaches to hold the green.
The greens are in reasonable shape, and I encounter only one burned green on hole number 15. Further, I was impressed with the size of the course and the picturesque layout of the routings. I truly appreciated the large numbers behind the greens that kept me from being lost (the same goes for the ample sized markers for each hole.
The course played tougher than I expected with a few narrow angles for your tee shots. Add in some dog-legs and you’ve got an old school course that’ll give your game a workout.
Interestingly, there’s no sand on the course, but the course protects itself in able fashion with the steep hiss’s and uneven fairway lies. Only my short-game kept me from an abject beating this day. Looks, you need to be straight. You don’t have to me massively long )it helps), but solid, straight shots and a little bit of imagination around the undulating green complexes will see you through.
Yes, the cart paths are a little worn, but that’s really not the point of the exercise, is it? You need to find your straight game and think your way around this oldie but goodie course.
Better
Hickory has needed help for a long time. Course condition has been poor, with tons of weeds, patchy greens, etc. We heard they had a new grounds keeper, so we booked it. By no means is it perfect, but worth the $30. 100% better than our last time there a few years ago. Will be back soon. Hopefully they keep improving
Much improved
I played this course several years go and wrote it off because it was very poorly maintained. I played around today and was pleasantly surprised. The course was in pretty good condition. Fairways were cut properly, greens were in pretty good shape with some small spots that were under repair. The tee boxes were decent, with a couple slightly beat up. The layout is fun with a lot of elevation changes. Not one single fairway bunker and I only noticed one greenside bunker on the entire course, but elevated greens and mature tree growth still make for a challenge.
Overpriced
I’ll start this off with that I started golfing this year and have never been to a course I thought was genuinely bad til now. Nothing is in good condition on the course. Hitting out of the fair way half the time is worse than the rough. There is cart path going right through the middle of half the holes right where the average golfer would typically hit their drive. There is trees overhanging pretty far into most of the fairways, so you hit a beautiful tee shot just to have an impossible shot to the green. And for almost $50......if I had paid $25-$35 I probably wouldn’t be nearly as disappointed.
Love the hills!
Really surprised, a big difference from 3 years ago. They are working hard to shape this course up! A pleasure golfing there! The staff is awesome.
