Horribly kept course
There were no fairways, no tee boxes, terrible greens, and the weeds and long grass over took the rough and playable areas. Myself and my friend lost 2 balls that were hit in the middle of the "fairway". Don't waste your money!
Hickory Hills
Course is in much better shape than in years past. Good value for the money...
Fine if you come with the right expectations
It could be better maintained, but if you‘re just an ok golfer and come with the right expectations, you will have a good time.
Ok, so I came when they first opened during Covid-19 (early May) because this was the only course with a early tee time. Let’s start with the good: (1) the greens were really well taken care of (not just public course good, just generally good); (2) the course is built for double digit handicappers, so if you’re looking for lots of water and sand traps, go elsewhere.
The not so good: the grass can definitely get long and the earlier comments about losing your balls is true. This course gets a lot of rain and is hilly with lots of trees, so if they fall behind with maintenance, I’m sure it can get rough quick. Their fairways seemed to be as long as the first cut rough at very nice courses, and their rough is rough rough, so yes there are times where you hit it middle of the fairway and struggle to find it, or hit it in the rough expecting to find it and can’t. The grounds crew was out when I arrived, so the course may get better as the summer continues. Be good about helping each other track your shots, keep the Pro-V1Xs in the bag, and if you’re really worried, set a rule for the round with the group to be generous with free drops for balls that shouldn’t have been lost.
TLDR: Really good greens; long grass with lost balls; good for double handicapped golfers trying to get some reps or good golfers desperate for a tee time.
Things can only improve?...
This course could be fun and enjoyable.,but the day we played the course was in horrible shape. The fairways were an extension of the rough, long and unmanicured. The greens were bumpy and in many places were dirt. Forget about the sand traps they also were in horrible shape. Of course during these CoVid-19 era just being out playing golf was a joy, but com on they still charged us $35 (twilight hours) and $10 for a gas cart that looked as dirty and unsanitized as ever. While the staff was cordial and willing to assist us this course needs a huge clean up effort. I cannot recommend this course and won’t be going back especially since there are so many other good courses in the western suburbs.. To pay these fees for a product in such bad shape makes me disappointed and feel like I was taken. I rate Hickory Hills one star.
Classic Course: Needs a trim
The course started out looking great. It was green and lush with the trees just starting to green up. I rushed to to the tee loser end up a bit and hit my first tee shot. Not bad for no warmup. Then I got to my ball. The rough was deep (no problem) but also very unkempt with clumps of higher and lower grass and lots or mud or water. The fairways had been erratically cut and we’re always deep enough to hide a ball. Again OK it is spring golf. Then the greens they were deadly slow and patchy with bare spots and lumpy areas.
While I loved the layout and the promise of some incredibly hard greens, the condition rendered this only a nice walk to get out of the time locked in at home.
Please take care of this course, it has so much to offer
Hot Hickory Mess
Learn how to care for your grounds! Fairways looked as if cut by an 8 year old with a weed waker. There was no differentiation between the rough or fairway. Greens were unputtable at times due to large dead spots/dirt patches and ridges caused by underground drainage pipes. Still nice to get out and play, but I won’t be coming back here again.
Not so great
Granted its december but the greens are horrible, ball bounces 30 times before it gets to the hole. Geese poop ALL over the course. Theres not a step of grass without geese turds.
Rags to riches
Played this course 2 months ago, swore I wouldn't play it again. But never say never,New superintendent I'm told.can not believe the improvements, it would not say perfect yet,but what I've seen with my own eyes, can't wait until next year.its 100 % better than a couple months ago.
Book with caution
I paid $14 for a hot deal. It was worth it but I would never pay more than $20 to play this course. Needs some TLC. Course was very wet but some of the fairways had been mowed. This course could be great but sadly, I think those days are long gone.
Don’t Play Here!!!!
This goat ranch should not be open to the public until the underground irrigation is completely repaired. You will have to deal with flooded greens, fairways and mounds of dirt everywhere. Golf now should take this off their site.
Worst course I have ever played at!!
Calling this course a goat path would be a compliment. Spent more time looking for our balls in the middle of fairways than we did taking shots. The fairway grass is so long and unkempt, Ive seen shorter rough on other courses. Greens were badly burnt and so untrue. There is no maintenance done to this course whatsoever, you can tell they don’t care!! Can not explain how this course stays in business. Don’t waste your time or any of your money here!!
this course needs work
course has a good layout but ruff needs mowing. a lot of repair going on digging large trenches in many fairways. tee boxes not mowed, greens with many burned out areas. best description of overall condition of course is "Seedy"
Under construction
I have played this course many times. This year they had a lot of problems with their watering system a lot of the course is under construction.
Worse Course ever
Course was not maintained on any level. I expected so much more especially since I got this as a hot deal. Sand traps had weeds growing out of them which is one of many examples of how bad the worse was. I will never play there again.
Will never return
Construction consisting of entire fairways being dug up and piles of dirt in the middle of play (on almost every hole) Greens had huge dead patched and ball didn’t roll straight. Clearly no one at Hickory Hills cares about the quality of the course. Unplayable bunkers during great weather.
The course is dookie. Conditions are bad. Weeds for rough. Rough for a fairway. Long fringe for the greens. There are holes on the greens. Big holes in the middle of the fairway I used a previously expired group golfer voucher that I could still use the value of it and just pay the difference. I still ended up paying $25 with cart. So it would’ve been about $40-50 without it for an awful course. No. Don’t waste your time here unless you really don’t care where you golf.
Horrible
The course conditions are horrendous. Tee box grass 3" tall fairways were deep. Roughs were ridiculously high. Greens like like they were burned and ground down.... We will not be back. Sad, it's close to home and going down hill FAST.
