Old Oak Country Club
About
Old Oak Country Club is situated only 20 minutes from Chicago, but the beautifully wooded terrain shaded by mature oaks and hickory trees, makes it feel as though it's much further away. Originally opened in 1926, the golf course is one of the area's oldest and even one of the oldest in the state. It has undergone many renovations over the years but it still retains its classic character. The layout offers plenty of variety with drivable par 4s and lengthy par 5s. The rolling topography provides many of the golf course's challenges, from the rolling fairways and undulating greens to the elevated tees and blind shots. Mature trees tower over the fairways, adding another tricky element to the golf course. Old Oak Country Club is challenging but fair and still quite playable, which is why it has long been a local favorite.

Tough trek if you're tree prone
Great conditions, tucked away with a few perimeter shots by the roads. Trees make lines tight but with minimal winds assisting the carry made this course exciting yet challenging. Plenty of bunkers to get sunken into with a fair transfer of rough to green. Definitely coming back to this old school club.
fall weekend
got special fall rate to play. weather held and played in 4 hours. course in good shape, fall colors are beautiful this time of year. would play again
Great track
Played as a single with a Hot Deal. Great course, nice to see mature trees lining the fairways. Greens were in good shape for this time of year. Fairways were beautiful. We had a threesome and finished in about 3.25 hours. Never waited on a single hole. Would definitely come back again.
Good course but stalker ranger
The course and facility was nice. I enjoyed the chance to hit from the sand and chip prior to the round. I didn't appreciate the ranger always lurking and making sure were moving extremely fast. We felt uncomfortable and thought he was over the top. After our first 9 we saw there was an outing planned and felt rushed to get back to the next 9 right away. Good value with golf now coupon but didn't like how we were rushed.
Starter needs work
Asked the starter for any tips for the golf course his reply: "its a golf course"
The course was a challenging fun course aside from seeing tons of divots and missing a birdie putt due to scuffs right on the lip of the hole. Not sure how that area gets messed up but it was.
Need to get rid of that surly starter. No need at all for that grumpiness and hate.
Good Course Beware being brown
Challenging course but some of the staff and other players seemed more difficult to deal with than the course.
Beware being a brown golfer around here.
The course was in excellent condition
The greens were great and true and the fairways were cut to the right height and ruffs were good also if you hit into them you could at least find your ball. This course should be played by more players they will enjoy a great game. No need for extra balls if you play the course the way it should be played even the tough holes and 13 if you pay the fee and get a HOLE IN ONE YOU WILL WIN $10.0000 and last week one did and go the money and one did not pay the fee and did and NO Money/.
Reliable
Old Oak is an old traditional track. Well maintained, staff knows it's job and does it well. Bunkers need some sand, and golfers need to rake them and fix ball marks on greens. Pace was a bit slow but not painfully. Well worth a visit.
A top-notch course in the southwest suburbs
This is one of my favorite courses in the southwest suburbs. It is interesting, moderately challenging, nice layout, some terrain, lots of trees, yet fair. #5 is a gorgeous downhill par 5 with a scenic backdrop. #11 and #12 are a nice tandem consisting of a big left-to-right dogleg par 4 combined with a short over-wetlands par 3. #14 is quite tough since the deep creek is conveniently at most golfers' normal driving distance - either bust out your biggest drive or layup. Pace of play for a holiday was actually pretty decent. Nobody in front of our foursome until we caught with a group on the 4th hole. Shortly afterward the ranger came by and said pace will pick up since they found some slow-pokes on #7. Very little waiting, finished right at 4 hours. Pin placement was challenging for a holiday - a lot of sloping greens and more than a couple pins placed on the slopes. Course was in excellent shape. Hot, humid day made for some discomfort but not excessive. Nothing bad to say about Old Oak. It's all good. Decent holiday rate from GolfNow.
Very nice assortment of holes
Challenging and fun course. Different varieties of holes make you use a lot of different shots
Slow Play is a dealbreaker here
Our group likes this course, but we won’t be back. We really enjoy the layout, which features a good variety of holes. We always have exciting matches here. But this course has fundamental problems they've failed to resolve so we play here less than in past years. After yesterday, I doubt we’ll be play here again.
Some of our complaints are perhaps minor quibbles, but most create conditions unfavorable to actual play:
- The $5 cart key deposit is a curious rule. Why? What other course does anything like this? Do they really lose that many keys? Are they hoping to beat me out of $5?
- The flags have stiff boards inserted so no information on wind direction or intensity can be ascertained. We have no idea why they do this. Again I ask: why?
- The greens-keeping is often sloppy. Green curtains routinely have gouges and indeterminate edges and hole cuts are not always clean. Yesterday, we had two holes with noticeable damage from poor cutting and on this visit the greens were much slower than they should be.
- Pace of play can be glacially slow. Weekend rounds of 5+ hours are not uncommon; 4:45 is about the best you can hope for.
This last item is our primary beef and what will keep us from coming back. Some in our group think the course is not spacing out the times enough; sending out foursomes every ten minutes. I think the larger issue is that the club membership — those with standing weekend times – are conditioned to play from the back tees, and they don’t have the game for it. From the tips, the course is less than 6500 yards so it seems within reach to most regular players. However, Old Oak can be a handful from the gold tees, especially with two very long par threes on the front. The regulars get shoved out there early and create a logjam from which the field never recovers. We had a threesome ahead of us, playing the tips. Overheard on the first tee: “Go gold or go home.” Do us a favor big boy: Go home. This group waited so long on the 4th teebox that they decided to team up with the threesome ahead of them, also playing the back tees, and finished the front side as a six-pack. It’s hard to believe any ranger would allow this, but in any case, it certainly didn’t make things move faster. Plus all six were short of the green at the 6th; an uphill forced carry of over 200 yards.
The behavior of these regulars is inconsiderate to the players behind them, but the course exacerbates the problem with poor rangering and starters who do nothing but push groups out quickly. It’s too bad. Old Oak is a fun course with above-average practice areas and a nice grill at the turn. But for $82, we expect a better experience.
Beautiful course top notch staff
Course is beautiful, from the rolling tree lined fairways to the perfectly manicured undulating greens. Tough course, perfect bunker placement but not a lot of water. The staff was friendly and the ranger made sure the pace of play was on par.
Management and staff absent
Pace of play is always slow here, but today, 5;45 hours for 18 holes. Not one ranger on the course, garbage cans at every hole overflowing and spilling onto the ground.
As many as three foursomes waiting on most holes, people playing as groups more than four.
This course is not modest in price point, they charge more than most in the area and I for one will never come back after years of playing there, this was the tipping point for me.
Early on a Monday
Second guys off. Course was in great shape. Fairways and green already cut. Just great shape after a large rain the night before. Always treated very well at Old Oak. Can't wait to come back!
Awesome Course
The staff, the best. The course awesome! I like when the Rangers are actually watching play.
This course has some tight fairways narrow
Great place to hone your skills slopes on greens are challenging. Good place to play.
Great
Challenging but fun course. Great place. Greens were excellent and the course was open and beautiful. Would recommend to anyone to play here.
5 Stars!
I golfed at Old Oak for the first time this past weekend as part of an outing and absolutely loved it!
I had reserves going into the outing due to the several inches of rain we had earlier that day and the previous week; however, the course was in great condition! I had a lot of fun out on the course and during dinner in Old Oak's banquet hall. The banquet staff was friendly and attentive.
Hole in One!
I heard my co-workers talking about how much they enjoyed golfing at Old Oak the previous weekend and therefore decided to give it a shot. I was not disappointed!
There was a great pace of play and every employee I came into contact with was very friendly. Not to mention the general beauty of the course!
The clubhouse has a slightly dated feel to it; however, it yielded a "homey" feeling. Great food! Great service! Great bar staff!
A GREAT start to the summer!
This was my first time out at Old Oak this summer and I had a GREAT experience! The course is in EXCELLENT shape! It is always in good condition; however, this year is the best I've seen it! I will definitely be returning and would advise anyone who has not yet been out to Old Oak to try it out as well.
