Bonnie Brook Golf Course
About
Bonnie Brook Golf Course, known amongst locals as simply "The Brook," is one of the most popular public courses on the North Shore. It has even been ranked as one of the top 50 public golf courses in the Chicagoland area. Designed in 1926 by James Foulis, the course has a classic feel to it with challenges that have withstood the test of time. The layout sprawls across a scenic natural landscape accented with gently rolling hills, tall native grasses, and sparkling lakes. The north branch of the Waukegan River also meanders through part of the golf course. The Bonnie Brook layout offers enough of a challenge for advanced players with narrow, tree-lined fairways and subtly tricky undulations throughout the spacious greens, but it is a round that is player friendly enough for any skill level to enjoy.

Well maintained
Very easy play, wide fairways and smooth transition to greens, always like playing this course
In the middle of an old neighborhood
I grew up in the area and never played this course. I wish I would have experienced this sooner. Well kept and challenging. Going back again soon.
Old School Parkland - nice
The Brook was in decent shape late season. They aerated a couple of weeks ago and the greens have recovered nicely. It's a pleasant course with a driving range and slightly overpriced beverages. No carts allowed in the lot. Grilling food outside at the turn is always a nice touch. The front nine is pretty straight forward with a nice dogleg left par 5. The meat and challenge of the course starts at the 10th with a long par 4 and then the course gets a tad "stupid" and really tight with target hit and hope tee shots on the the 11th, 12th and 13th. Even the tee shot on the par 5 14th has to be fit between a couple of large trees. And then your tee shot on 16th requires another "lay up" short of a creek. All in all it's a decent place worth a play once or twice a year. I like the old school layout with hills and dales but inward holes while interesting aren't designed extremely well...a few too many targety tee shots for my taste. A nice uphill finish on 18. 3.75 stars upgrading to a four as it's well maintained.
Great Lake County Course
Course is in great condition for this late in the season. The carts are well maintained, the starter was super friendly and knowledgeable. The layout of the course is easy to follow with little cross fairway issues with people playing from the other direction.
They have an incredibly nice beverage cart person that has several great drink options and snacks if you wanted to purchase something. The clubhouse is really nice with a super friendly staff.
Good course for the money. Not sure you will find a better value in the Northern Illinois/Southern Wisconsin area.
Thank you so much for the flattering review, particularly of the staff. We really appreciate your business and hope you'll be back soon so we can have a shot at earning that 5th star!
Always in great shape.
Ive played this sincd a kid and consider it my home course. For a public course its always in great condition. Even if the layout does not suit u as difficult, especially since a lot of trees were takin out, the greens always have a lot onjulations that can make putts challenging. The front desk staff is nice but do not seemed trained; took ten minutes to check in. May seem a little pricey but again the quality of the course is great and u can find deals online. I was surprised to find a beverage cart out on a weekday which ive only seen in the south which is great. They do great at golf outings. This is always one of my favs.
Thank you for being a loyal customer and calling us your home course! We are glad you enjoy it here and the feedback is much appreciated. Hope to see you soon!
Poor starter management
There was little control from the starter. He allowed a twosome who came late for their 12:45 tee time to "squeeze in" at 1:30 which pushed everyone back. He also allowed a fivesome to tee off when their reservation was for four. Starter would not enforce tee time etiquette. This caused a poor pace of play and excessive waiting on every tee. We saw a ranger only once the entire round. I love this course, but I will never play again on Saturday.
Thank you for coming in and playing at Bonnie Brook! We appreciate you taking the time to provide some feedback about your experience at the course. We sincerely apologize for the poor pace of play the day you came. Even though Saturdays are almost always busy for us, I do promise that this situation is the exception, not the norm. We do hope to see you back soon!
Bonnie Brook Golf Course
The Good: Decent park district course near the IL/WI border is well conditioned and staff that provides a nice, casual atmosphere. Old school parkland design has good variety of long and short Par 4's, risk-reward Par 5's, and challenging Par 3's. Small, challenging greens can be very slick. Nice clubhouse with banquet area and small restaurant area and bar. Pretty good value for seniors and juniors during the week.
The Bad: Poor practice facilities includes driving range that can only include irons. No short game practice area. Several holes require a long carry over water that isn't realistic for most weekend golfers. Overpriced for quality of course compared to other options (Bittersweet & Shepherd's Crook) in the area.
The Verdict: Bonnie Brook is a fun little municipal track that doesn't have the upscale amenities or practice facilities, but the staff makes up for it.
Best Hole: The short Par 4 #12 requires strategy off the tee with multiple creeks to carry and requires an approach to a small, undulating green.
Thank you for coming in and playing at Bonnie Brook! We really appreciate the honest and helpful feedback and we thank you for recognizing our staff for the wonderful group they are. Hope to have you back soon!
Solid muni track
Course is in good shape. Layout is ok. Very playable and scoreable.
Thank you for coming and playing!
Could have been even more enjoyable
Love the course wide and long at times -in really good shape but:
If it wasn't wide open on our day of play - pace of play would at times slowed to a crawl - too much effort spent trying to figure out distances.
Would recommend they install more distance stake markers on the fairways. Include more distances information on score card , website, maybe even have a real detailed distance sheet for water and dogleg holes for us newbies to the course -not everyone uses a GPS.
Thank you for coming and playing at Bonnie Brook! We appreciate the kinds words and positive feedback as well as highlighting some things we could get better at. We hope to see you back again soon!
Great course but disappointed with the staff
I can't tell you to not play this course but hopefully you don't have my misfortune. My father and I were the only playing that day and once we finished our round we found ourselves locked in the course. The staff completely forgot about and locked all the doors and gates. We had jump the fence to get to my truck. My truck being there should have alerted the staff we were still on the course. I assume they just didn't care. As I said though great course but extremely disappointed in the staff for that
I'm very sorry to hear this happened to you. Could you please contact me as I would like to discuss this with you further.

Hidden Jewel
This course is well kept including the greens. Almost every hole was very challenging . There were a few holes that were staight and without challenge. That is why I gave it a overall score of 4. It is a very enjoyable course. I would recommend this course to intermediate and advanced golfers.
Great experience!
The greens and fairways were in great condition. It was obvious that golfers here fix their divots and pitch marks.
Bonnie Brook has a really nice layout for a relaxing round of golf. It's very difficult to get in trouble. With two of us playing, we finished in about 3 1/2 hours, with a 15 minute lunch break at the turn.
The main challenges here are the moderately undulating greens - several of them are very interesting and require good putting stroke.
This is my new favorite course!
Course looks great
We played around 3 on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. It was a 4.5 hour round. There were two 2 somes that should have been paired together in front of us as we had to wait on them the entire front 9. The fairways were in great shape, what wasn't was under construction and looks like it will be nice shortly. My biggest problem were the greens. The looked good except for the unfixed ball marks (not the courses fault but players who don't repair) but for some reason the green were extremely bumpy. You could hit a perfectly lined up putt and it would bounce 5 times before it came close to the cup. It was almost like they were not rolled in months. I would play here again as long as the greens were in better shape. I hope they get the greens figured out because I really like this course.
nice elevations
this was the first time playing this course & i would come back anytime !!! nice people, nice course & user friendly !!!!
Great day
First time, course condition in excellent shape. Just got back from Myrtle Beach, this course made me feel like I never left. Our group have a wonderful day.
Well Maintained
Nice parkland golf course with some good challenges. Course suffers by only having three par 3's which are all about the same distance and two par 5's.....the 11th through 13 holes are pretty much target golf and will wreck a scorecard or two. Nice challenging uphill finishes to both nines. Try not to 3 putt the 18th. Nice folks, sand traps are in decent shape and the greens roll true.
Thanks for playing at Bonnie Brook! We appreciate the 4 stars and the honest review.
