St. Andrews Golf & Country Club - Joe Jemsek Course
About
There are two championship golf courses available at St. Andrews Golf & Country Club in West Chicago as well as a top-ranked practice center. The Joe Jemsek Course, formerly known as the Lakewood, was added in 1929, three years after the club opened. Unlike the original St. Andrews Course, the Joe Jemsek Course has a hillier terrain. Although it is shorter than the other golf course at 6,770 yards, the elevation changes make it seem similar in length to the 6,920-yard St. Andrews Course. The course features tree-lined fairways and strategically placed bunkers, offering plenty of challenges but overall it is not an overly intimidating layout for beginners. There are several long and demanding par 3s throughout. The best example being the tricky second hole, which has a green that is guarded by two deep bunkers and towering trees.

Where My 2nd Shot Landed Photo submitted by DavePipitone on 07/25/2017
Even on a soggy course
Traditional parkland course in excellent shape even after storms the previous night.
Lakewood course
All the par 3's are a challenge being long, 190 yds+. That was an issue on #2, as 3 groups were backed up right off the bat. The ranger did come by and apologize and explain it would open up in a few holes. Greens were in fairly good condition for this late in the year. Overall a good value even with weekend rates. Range was very nice.
Great Course for Value
Great Course. Very Challenging. However, pace of play was slow...finished in just over 4 hours....but for a twosome, should have been finished in more than 3 1/2 hours.
Fun, Playable
This is a very good golf course especially for a foursome that has different ability levels. The course was in very good shape. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Par 3's all played long - 3 of them were in the 180-190 range, one was 240. A few of the par 4's were on the shorter side so there is a nice balance. The greens were in great shape. Be careful on holes 17 and 18 as there is water in play on both-second shot on 17 and the drive on 18 bring water into play.
Two downsides were the beverage cart was only found one time, although there is a half way house that you hit twice. Also the carts and GPS have a definite "old school" feel to them.
All in all it was a beautiful day, great golf and played 18 in 3.5 hours.
Nice golf facility
I was in the area and decided to play here due to proximity to where I was working. I was pleasantly surprised by this 36 hole family owed facility. They had rangers out working the course and since I was a single and had arrived just as one of their leagues was going off they escorted me out in front of the leagues where I was able to get around quite quickly. When I did catch back up with the leagues I saw a ranger who was able to find a room on their other 18 hole golf course so I was able to experience both layouts. The staff in the pro shop were extremely friendly and truly made me feel welcome to their above average facility. I have played a few other muni's in the area and this was one of the nicer layouts and the course was well maintained. The bunkers were all raked and they were consistent from hole to hole.
Overall a very enjoyable round of golf.
Go somewhere else
Let me start by saying, I am a fairly low handicap golfer so excuse me if I sound like a snob. If you do not enjoy playing a game called "guess how fast this green is going to be" I would not suggest playing st. andrews. It looked as some of the putting surfaces hadn't been cut that day while some had. Nothing bums me out more then hitting the shot you intend to hit and having to guess green speed. Maybe I am giving them a poor review because you get the feeling the facility thinks it has something special, which it doesn't. Its a fairly bland golf course with a nice practice area. You can find better deals for less money. Also we saw the cart girl once on the 6th hole, she didn't even say hi. We were getting pretty dehydrated out there.
Pace of play on the front nine was an hour and a half, the pace of play on the back was 3+ hours. We saw a handful of fivesomes out there.
ST ANDREWS KEEPS ROLLING ALONG
This was an enjoyable return to play St Andrews after not playing the course after 20 years. Still challenging and fun. Great day was had by all.
Slightly Antiquated
Overall had a good day on a beautiful course. A few recommendations would be improvements in the golf carts and GPS systems as ours continually shut off (GPS) and our cart was as loud and dumpy ad it almost gets. The food was just ok in the clubhouse and on the course non-existant. 1 cart girl for 36 holes and on a Sunday where 18 took 4.5 hours, could have appreciated more frequency, the grill being open and definitely a better selection of food all together. Basically just felt like the course ammenities need some TLC
It's a well established course with mature trees
I have been going there for over 40 years, because we used to have our Association's Golf Outing there. There banquet hall served excellent food for over 700 people. Lately, I've just gone there to golf ( last 10 years). Both Golf courses are well maintained and in good condition. However, their golf carts are very old and need a lot to be desired. They should get electric carts with a good GPS System. It stinks currently.
Paid for 18 but played 9 in 2 hrs and 30 min
Got a good deal on GolfNow with a 5:37p tee time. Didn't think I would get all 18 in before dark but thought would get through more than 9. The pace of play was slow to glacier speed. Three people in front of us, one walking, other two in a cart were on pace for a 5 hour round if it didn't get dark first.
Never seen so many practice swings from people hitting it 50 yards at a time. The group in front of them also had two people walking and two riding so we had no where to go. The back nine had league play going on so we had to painfully watch the 30 handicappers in front of us.
There were marshals out but they seemed like they were just out driving around enjoying the weather and not really worried about customers waiting 10 on each tee box waiting for the hacks in front of them.
The course was in good shape considering the amount of rain it seemed to recently get.
Overall for the price I paid, I shouldn't complain to only get through 9 holes but would definitely not pay full price to play there.
Tried & True
The Joe Jemsek course is a beautiful course. Fairways are all straight and fairly wide. Not super challenging but pleasant nonetheless. It frequently has hot deals on GolfNow and is therefore a great value. Nice grass driving range. Friendly staff.
St. Andrews
Very good day to golf at this beautiful course and a great price...
Very good course with some challenging holes
The pace of play can be slow sometimes but the course is in great condition. Most of the holes are pretty straightforward but you still have to execute.
Great Scenic Course
Great course and first time playing. Lakewood course was hilly and very challenging long Par 3's. Your shots need to be precise on this course. I like this course because not a lot of chances to lose your ball in hazards, however a couple holes have water in play that can sneak up on you, mainly 17 & 18 as approach shots are over water. Club selection is important. They give you a course book with yardage for each hole in various areas. Makes you feel like a pro since you can make notes in the book so that when you play it again you can have some notes from your previous play to help you in future play. I was able to play early on a cool morning and was able to get ahead of the foursome to allow me to get some good practice in which is some times difficult on an actual course. Halfway through the round I said I can't wait to play this course again. I was also impressed with amenities outside of the golf course and can't wait to experience it with a few buddies on this course. Looking forward to playing the St. Andrews Course.
Course in excellent shape.
First time playing St. Andrews. Course #2 was in excellent condition. I don't live very close to West Chicago but I would definitely travel from Chicago to play this course again.
Course #2 had some very long par 3's. Made for a fun challenge.
Old style course
Course hasn't changed much over the years.Decent conditions.Fairly challenging.Has one of the best practice centers in the area.Course has excellent driainage.Carts allowed in fairways even after rain that would restrict carts at other courses. No standing water anywhere.Greens were a little quicker than I remembered, especially the downhill putts.
great greens
the greens, fairways, even the t-boxes were in great shape.
Great Layout and upkeep
Our foursome loved the course! We hadn't played St. Andrews in a few years and we were pleasantly surprised on the condition of the course and grounds. Fairways, greens, bunkers were all nicely manicured. We will play there again no doubt.
Always in good shape
Course was empty so our threesome playen in 3:15 which was awesome.
Would probably get more traffic with better rates.
Beautiful course
This golf course is in great condition fairways, greens great value for you money
