St. Andrews Golf & Country Club - Joe Jemsek Course
About
There are two championship golf courses available at St. Andrews Golf & Country Club in West Chicago as well as a top-ranked practice center. The Joe Jemsek Course, formerly known as the Lakewood, was added in 1929, three years after the club opened. Unlike the original St. Andrews Course, the Joe Jemsek Course has a hillier terrain. Although it is shorter than the other golf course at 6,770 yards, the elevation changes make it seem similar in length to the 6,920-yard St. Andrews Course. The course features tree-lined fairways and strategically placed bunkers, offering plenty of challenges but overall it is not an overly intimidating layout for beginners. There are several long and demanding par 3s throughout. The best example being the tricky second hole, which has a green that is guarded by two deep bunkers and towering trees.

Where My 2nd Shot Landed Photo submitted by DavePipitone on 07/25/2017
Good greens and well maintained
Great day for golf. Got behind a slow threesome but that's not the courses fault. Course was relatively open with just enough framing to keep your attention.
Good course. Enjoyed course.
Enjoyed course. Sand traps wet. Course soft. Staff friendly. Beer in 19th hole cold.
Grip it & Rip it!
1st time here & boy was it a lot of fun. We played the Joe course from the tips & was it a tale of 2-9's. The front 9 was noticably shorter w/only 1-par 5, while the back 9 had 3-par 5's. Very open, very forgiving for the folks that move their balls around into other fairways :-) Greens were in pretty good shape. Everyone was friendly & moved along a at a great pace. If you're looking for something to have fun on & not loose a lot of balls this place is for you! We enjoyed it.
Fun
First time I played this course. The pace of play was fast, played 18 with a cart in about 3:45. The fairway are pretty wide, trees line the both sides of the fairways. Course was in great shape.
Course #2 is perfect for the average golfer
The course has enough sand, water and trees to provide challenges on every hole, but not make it too over bearing. The par 3s are longer than most and allow you to uses longer irons or hybrids instead of the typical short irons. Overall I would recommend this course to everyone.
Great Value
Our threesome went out yesterday. The staff was kind, the course was a little busy but not bad at all. As two of my group are just picking up the sport letting a couple of group play through added to our time for the total round(still finished in 4.5), everyone was still very nice. It was a pleasant experience and will be back again. The course was in pretty good shape. I would give the course and staff high marks and recommend you give them a shot.
17 and 18 are tough
Course is moderate over, 17 and 18 are pretty tough. One of my pet peeves is a course that has leaves all over it, especially when it's not even fall yet. Other than that, it was a great course
Decent Course...on a HotDeal
Well Maintained. Played the Jensek course. Holes aren't very long. Good for all golfers. Had a HotTee time which made everything even better. Overall a decent course.
Slow play, slow play, lots of mowers!!
The course played extremely slow for a wednesday mid-day and we were in front of an outing. We had no clear guidance of where to drp our bags and the staff seemed distracted and frazzeled by the pending outing. The group behind us hit into us twice trying to move us along as we were stacked three deep at the tee boxes. I think the course was ok, GPS was really outdated and they must prosper with the outing trade? Everytime i've played St. Andrews the place is overrun with outing activity. The most annoying thing about the round was a lawnmower in every single fairway on the front nine and they could care less that golfers were waiting or even playing near by! overall not a great experience.
Course is great.
It was very slow. The beer cart interrupted play quite a bit. Foursome in front spent quite a few minutes getting beer at tee when fairway was wide open. The beer car should not stop at tee unless it is backed up. The threesome in front of two groups ahead of us spent considerable time at the half house. The back up was three groups at the hole no. 8. The ranger's job is to keep the groups moving.
Nice course but run by amateurs
I like this course. Let's get that out of the way right now. But there is a lot about it that is 2nd rate and detracts from the overall experience.
First, they make you buy tees. I haven't bought golf tees in 20 years. $1.17 for a little bag of 10 or so. That is so ticky tack.
Second, they don't provide you with a towel to wipe down your clubs. I asked the starter if I could have the towel that was in his cart (going unused) and he looked at me like I had asked him for his wife's cell #, and said "no". Thanks.
Third, the greens are beautiful bent grass greens but are painfully slow. I mean SLOW-W-W.
Fourth, it hadn't rained for 2 days but there was water in a couple bunkers.
Fifth, the rough. I'm a 4 handicap golfer and can handle tough conditions. The rough at St. Andrews is fairly penal, which is fine, but it contributes to constantly walking around for 2-3 minutes and looking for your ball. Which leads to my last point ...
Sixth, a ridiculous pace of play. 5+ hours on a Saturday afternoon when there were plenty of open tee times, meaning the course wasn't full.
Staff in pro shop, on course and in the grill is very friendly. Nice layout. Good course. But it seems like it's being run and maintained by people who've never run a course before. I still can't get over paying for tees.
Fun course, Daily fee allows you to play a second time for free you just need to pay your cart fee again.
Pretty easy course, very little water or other hazards where you can lose a ball. If you can hit it straight, you should score well at this course.
The greens are very challenging
Course is fair and will be a true test of your golf skills.
The course is beautiful and challenging
Would have liked faster play, but the four of us were put behind a golf outing group of about 15 and it was slow at a lot of the holes.
Also it was very hot and the cart girl took along time coming around and she would drive by fast and if we did not wave her down she never stopped ..
Nice course, good value
First time playing at St A. Played the Joe J course (Lakewood). Very good condition, and great pace, which is very important to my wife and I. Cart was clean and had good power. Friendly staff in the Pro Shop and restaurant. No complaints. Worth the trip from DT Chicago. We'll be back.
Nice Course, But They Allow Fivesomes
I have played this course for years and always have enjoyed it thouroughly. I have not typically played at this time of day which was around 3:15 pm, they have leagues which are allowed to play as fivesomes. There were two back to back fivesomes that dramatically slowed play so much that I had to skip several holes (ranger was helpful in making that suggestion) and then come back after the 18th to play 8 and 9.
There were 4 or 5 holes open in front of the two groups,
Very good public course.
Course was in great shape but slow, which you can expect playing on a Sunday at 2:30. Course was in real nice shape...thank you rain!
Good course for the money.
Hardly any water hazards, but there are a lot of trees. The tee times between golfers is too short, so there is a lot of waiting. It seems as if many high handicappers golf there too. Don't expect to finish in less than 5 hours. The course is well maintained.
Great course, Long game time
I was forced to play course #2 due to tournament on course 1. We had 4 sets of four WALKERS in front of us and I have to say that it was the longest round I had ever endured in my whole 30 years of playing!! I am completely disappointed that the starter did not send us to start at the 9th hole. I tried and he didn't let us. Other than that, the course is in excellent shape and is very challenging. I look forward to playing course #1 next time and will refuse to go behind several walkers again!!!
Great Fathers Day Golf experience
Course 2 was in wonderful condition from tee box to green.
