St. Andrews Golf & Country Club - St. Andrews Course
About
Opened in 1926, in the "Classical ERA" of U.S. course development, St. Andrews Golf & Country Club has been recognized as the oldest family owned-operated golf course in Illinois.
St. Andrews Golf & Country Club was originally built in 1926 as a rival to the Chicago Golf Club. Since then, the club has built its own reputation and stands out for its two championship golf courses and top-ranked practice center. The St. Andrews Course is the club's original layout before the Joe Jemsek Course was added in 1929. It is also the longer of the two golf courses. The club and course draw their name from the famous Scottish club known as the "home of golf," but the course is far from being a seaside links. Instead, the mostly flat layout weaves through mature trees. The golf course offers a challenge with tight, tree-lined doglegs and large, contoured greens framed with sand bunkers. It has a memorable finish with a par 4 that features a water hazard along the entire right side of the fairway.

First timer
I've never played golf in Chicago before so I don't know what is regional or due to the "bad winter" like most of the reviews I've seen but seemed like nobody fixes their ball divots on the greens. But thought it was a really nice course otherwise. Played course #1 which had a bunch of holes tucked up against the highway so got noise from that so I would be interested to check out course #2.
caught behind an outing
Pace of play on front nine was very slow. When we made the turn there were four groups waiting to tee off. Called pro shop and they were very accommodating letting us jump to the front nine of jemsek course which was relatively open and we played that nine in 1:45 making it still a 4 1/2 hour round but back nine was much more enjoyable.
Good value and layout
Good layout with good balance of challenges on each hole. Only complaint would be
The bunkers which are more dirt than sand.
Don't see St Andrews and think Links Course. It's a nice old school course with more trees than heather.
A solid value and enjoyable course.
Very enjoyable track
Course in fine shape. I was especially pleased that the greens survived the winter very nicely. The St Andrew's course has exceptionally large greens with significant undulation. The pins were generally placed in very difficult spots, often on the edge of a sweeping depression. I believe the greens keeper could have set a more balanced challenge I.e. Some easier pins mixed with the difficult. Rough was pretty serious as it often required more conservative play. By the way, the staff seemed particularly nice and courteous, including the starter. Certainly recommend this fine golf facility.
Course is in great shape
We had a lot of rain the night before. But, the course was in great shape. The staff is very professional and friendly.
Great deal!!
This course is wellllll worth the money, and it's a steal when it's a hot deal!!!!
Nice Course, Friendly Staff
First time playing this course, just visiting on a business trip and had a day off to get a round in. Staff was great, course was in good shape (especially considering the weather they have had lately). Played as a single for most of the course but paired up for the last 3-4 holes. The last two holes are spectacular (as the reviews stated). Very happy and would play here again if the opportunity presented itself. Had lunch in the clubhouse after the round and it was very good. Even waiting around on the last few holes (having caught up to a couple of foursomes and pairing up with another single) we still managed to finish the course in 3 hours (riding).
Tough Greens
Greens were tough. Cart paths can probably br redone. Practice facilities are great.
Challenging in the wind
Good course, nice practice area and strategically placed bunkers. Windy conditions made the round very tough but not impossible. Large greens, played very fast. Greens and fairways were in mid-season condition which is great considering the long Chicago winter of 2013-14. Tight fairways with strategically placed trees. Clubhouse food was outstanding. Worth a lunch stop after a round.
Nice Course
Played on Easter with a friend. We were done in about 3 hours with no delays. Course was in decent shape given the winter we had and the staff was very helpful. Nice range and practice area. Played the Lakewood (Joe Jemsek) course. Some challenging greens. Took some tips from our starter about the misleading water on 17 and 18. Good place to play.
No flat greens to be found here
The greens at the St. Andrews course were the most undulating greens that I have played in a long time. There were no straight putts to be found during our round. The course was in excellent condition for this early in the year, I will make every effort to play this course again.
Not a single flat green on the course
It has been a while since I played this course, actually many years, and I did not recall the greens being as contoured as they were. There was not a single putt of over 10ft in our group that did not have at least 6 inches of break. Pin placements were on a ridge on evry hole. I actually had a putt of 15 ft that had 6-8 feet of break, thought I was putting at the US Open on a Sunday. Conditions were great for this early in the season.
Great deal
The St Andrews staff at check in said they now have a replay rate, you only pay for the cart the second round. Can be right away or you can come back later in the day....good value subject to availability. Paid $22 plus the $2.90 fee/tax that Golf Now adds on.
Nice Greens
For being early in the season the course was free of debrie and ready to go.. First time on St. Andrews and it was a pleasant experience.
excellent facilities
course had great fairways and the greens where difficult to read(fast, at least for me) but very good conditions.
Love the wild life
I love this course. The par 3's are longer than average I have experienced. If I am having a good day of golf, it seems easy. If I am having a bad day, i am totally challenged.
St. Andrews course #1
The course was wet from all the rain, we should of played clean and place but diidn't. It was avery windy day (30mph+. We were just dying to get out for the first time after a long winter. The fairways, sand and greens were clean. The flag positions on the par 3's were very tough, even with out the crosswinds. The rough was fairly easy to hit out of being so early in the season. They recently stopped using gps and now give you a yardage book. That adds a little more time on each hole. They did have approx. 20 carts with winter covers on them which was very nice on a windy day.
Nice course n enjoy to play there!!!
Condition perfect n nicely set up!!! No traffic n highly recommend to play this course!!!
Plenty of challenges.
St. Andrews is a good challenge. The Par 3 holes take some negotiating, which is good!
Enjoyable course. Not hard but not simply easy course.
I been played this course once a while. Pretty moderate and well maintained. For Weekend golfers nice one. I enjoyed.
