Chevy Chase Country Club
About
Chevy Chase Country Club (formerly known as Traditions at Chevy Chase Country Club) in Wheeling is one of Chicagoland's top public golf facilities. Thomas Bendelow designed the golf course in 1925. The classic layout remained largely the same until 2002 when a major renovation updated the course and made it more challenging. The layout now has deep pot bunkers lined with tall native fescue that border the generous, rolling greens and undulating fairways. Though it is more challenging than it was, the golf course still offers a player-friendly round. Four sets of tees also ensure that golfers can play to their skill level. The course finishes with its signature hole, a par 5 that features water both left and right of the landing area off the tee. Three massive bunkers and yet another pond all fiercely guard the green as well.

Great condition, friendly staff -- good value
When I pulled into the parking lot, a staff member drove a cart to me and offered to drop it off. (I was walking and didn't need it, but appreciated the sentiment.) That kindness extended into the clubhouse and into the restaraunt where refreshments were sold.
I found the course to be in great condition for a public track in the summer, when use is heaviest. It is not a terribly difficult course, but it does offer enough challenges to keep the round interesting and demand a little bit of creativity in approach shots. There is a chipping/putting green to warm up on, but there is not a driving range. I had read some other complaints about pace of play, but I did not experience that issue. The round moved at a normal pace and we only had to wait to tee off on the turn (10th hole), which was understandable given that people were restocking on food/drink and using the restroom at the clubhouse.
I was very satisfied with the quality of the course for the price I paid. If I could offer one point of constructive feedback, it would be to consider adding one or two additional restrooms on the track. As it stands, they're a little bit spread out.
Course in great condition
Course was in great condition and the pace of play perfect. Great price for 18 holes with a cart.
Love it
a lot of challenging holes but the maintenance is great. Always a great time playing there
Nice Walk — Good Conditions
I flew into Chicago early on Sunday morning for a work event that began Sunday night. I decided since I had plenty of time to kill I would look for a place to get a round in before checking into my room. Chevy Chase CC was where I chose to play because of the time available on the tee sheet and it’s proximity to the airport and my final destination.
I booked through golf now when I landed it was $69 to walk 18 holes. I arrived about 40 minutes before my tee time because I had to get a rental set and wanted to hit some putts. The rental set was nice, but the bag was more of a staff bag making me need a push cart in order to walk. This was unfortunate—as the push carts were not complementary so another $6 dollars to rent a push cart and $50 bucks for the rental set I was all in around $125. Not terrible, but more than I typically pay to play golf.
The course was in good shape. Fairways, greens and tee boxes were well maintained and manicured. The greens were quick—especially down hill. You could tell it gets a lot of play because it was packed. Also you can tell it is a public joint because some folks didn’t do a great job filling divots in the fairway or repairing pitch marks on the greens. But like I said, all in all it was in great shape for a place that clearly takes on a massive number of rounds.
The worst thing was the pace of play. I can remember sitting and even laying down on the tee boxes as I waited as there were instances where 3 groups were stuck on the same tee box. The round took 4.5 hours and that is the longest round I had played in a long time.
I was paired up with a threesome, and they were kind and pleasant to be with. They affirmed 4.5 to 5 hour rounds were typical on weekends at most places around town.
To sum up, I would play it again. It was fun and well taken care of and the price was reasonable. However, if you are looking to move quickly this might not be the spot for you. My fear is you will have to pay considerably more to find a place that will not be as backed up giving you more of an opportunity for a quick round.
Have fun, hit um straight, and go low! Enjoy your round!!
