Chevy Chase Country Club
About
Chevy Chase Country Club (formerly known as Traditions at Chevy Chase Country Club) in Wheeling is one of Chicagoland's top public golf facilities. Thomas Bendelow designed the golf course in 1925. The classic layout remained largely the same until 2002 when a major renovation updated the course and made it more challenging. The layout now has deep pot bunkers lined with tall native fescue that border the generous, rolling greens and undulating fairways. Though it is more challenging than it was, the golf course still offers a player-friendly round. Four sets of tees also ensure that golfers can play to their skill level. The course finishes with its signature hole, a par 5 that features water both left and right of the landing area off the tee. Three massive bunkers and yet another pond all fiercely guard the green as well.

It was okay, but not worth $50
Staff was grrat service, but not well maintained field. I would play $30 not $50
Course beat up
Used to love this course, but now the conditions are very poor. No ranger and no beer cart person.
Disappointed.
Starter was super friendly. Beer cart came up hole one. After the second hole, we waited on every shot. No rangers came. There was no drinking water. We never saw the bevvy cart again. Not a difficult course, but I would not recommend it to anyone. I had higher hopes about this course and it missed on everything.
Nice Course in the NW Suburbs
This course is a very nice course located in the NW suburbs of Chicago. Greens are well maintained as is the rest of the course. Speed of play was not bad for a Friday afternoon before a long holiday weekend. Some challenging holes but not excessively difficult.
Definition of overrated
This course is overpriced generally but location is convenient so took advantage of a hot deal that was at least somewhat reasonable.
Even though it was a Sunday, one would think a start time of nearly 2 pm might result in a decent pace. Wrong.
Seems they priced the round a bit lower than normal because there was a huge outing going on that took up most of the course.
We completed 14 holes in a bit over 4 hours, and then quit to make it home before dinner got cold.
Course was soggy from recent rains, and greens and bunkers below expectations for the price. Rough around greens hadn't been cut in more than a week. Finding balls in rough very difficult too.
Stay away from this one. It was a complete slog and not worth the money at any price.
Course Conditions Have Gone Downhill
Hadn't played this course in several years despite living down the street thanks to what I feel are greens fees in excess of what the course is worth and a pace of play that can sometimes be annoying.
Today I snagged a golf now deal and decided to give it a try. When I used to play here often, I thought the post-renovation layout was great and the greens played firm, fast, and true. This time, the course was overgrown, soft (more than it should have been even with a bit of rain) and the greens were SLOW, BUMPY, and far from true.
As some have noted, it seems no one who plays here fixes ball marks or has any clue how to walk on a green without dragging spikes all over the place.
It is a shame this course cannot stay in good condition and it is surprising given the price they are getting. I will not be coming back any time soon.
Great for a weekday solo round
I just played this course on a Monday evening and it was amazing. I teed off immediately and was able to play 27 holes in 3 hours (playing by myself). The course is in good condition. The traps could use more sand and the greens are a little worn, but on the whole it was a nice place to play.
Nice day!
Course is in excellent shape although the greens were bumpy due to the public not repairing their ball marks.
Nice
Got out at 7:30 for a decent price. The front 9 greens had an amazing amount of ball marks on it. All three of us were missing putts that were 3 feet or less because of the ball marks. Every putt hit at least one ball mark on the front 9 and chamged direction. I would say it cost me a total of 5-6 strokes. Besides that everything else was great! Great clubhouse amazing staff.
Staff needs customer service help!
Everything started out okay, but around the 5th hole the foursome in front of us was really annoying and slow. We patiently waited until after the 9th hole and found the starter and told him that the group in front of us was more than 1 hole behind the group in front of them. He said he would check. Well, we got to hole 12 and now the gap was almost 2 holes and we were having to wait on every shot so I called the clubhouse and the guy in there told me there wasn't a gap, he was seeing groups on every hole. I told him that couldn't be because I was on the course looking at the two holes open in front of the group in front of us. NOTHING was ever done and we completed the back nine in almost 2 1/2 hours...ridiculous! THEN after the round as we were leaving we even mentioned this to the guy checking people in when you arrive and again, not an apology or we're sorry...nothing. Needless to say we will not be returning to this course anytime soon.
Almost 5/5
The course was great. My Dad and I got out on Father's Day and expect things to be a little slow, but play was moving right along. The course is in pretty great shape except for one part...the greens. After we got to the 1st green, it looked like it hadn't been tended to in a week. There were spike marks all over, numerous ball marks, and clumps of grass throughout. As our round went on, we noticed that every single green was this way. They were extremely soft so any shot outside of 50 feet left a huge ball mark on the green.
Overall I'd definitely come back for a second round, but if I see the greens in that shape again next time I'll likely play elsewhere.
Fantastic course, rude staff
The course was very nice, well maintained and absolutely no wait (granted we played at 6:15). The staff was extremely rude regarding the roped off section. We did not drive through the rope, but we did drive around it about 5 ft from the path. Two rangers came up and started yelling at us, talking to me like I never played the game or belonged on their course ("do you know what the yellow rope means" one ranger said.) Additionally we were instructed to come in 2 holes prematurely. Very disrespectful and made a few disgruntled customers.
Nice course
Course was in great shape. Used to play in a league at Chevy. Staff always personable, course well maintained.
Nice round
The course is in nice shape. The staff was great. The back 9 plays a little slower than the front but the round took 4 hours. You should be able to play it in less time
The new look bar was nice
Traditions at Chevy Chase Golf Club
The Good: Classic Thomas Bendelow design, which was updated in 2002 by Bob Lohmann, has a certain "Bushwood" feel to it. Layout is scrunched into 125 acres, but many holes are beautiful and challenging due to its unique pot bunkering. Very good course conditions and most greens are very challenging and undulated. Several very strong risk-reward Par 5's and some short, interesting Par 3's. Superb old-style clubhouse with full restaurant, bar and banquet area. Very friendly staff and good on-course amenities includes multiple restroom areas and GPS. While slightly overpriced during peak season, some great off-season rates for quality of course.
The Bad: "Chevy Chase" is not as smooth as its Ty Webb namesake: several holes are very close together and the routing is awkward. No driving range or short game area is a big minus. Not enough variation in the Par 4's as most are straight away and similar yardages. Some of the greens have so much undulation that they could be considered unfair.
The Verdict: "The Traditions" is another strong option in the Chicago northern suburbs. A good, quality course with no tricks. Everything is right in front of you.
Best Hole: The short Part 5 13th requires a strong drive over a trap and then an approach to a thin, long green guarded by water left.
Not Bad for Late Fall
Today was cart path only due to the heavy rain we had yesterday. Fairway was clean of leaves and well maintained; if in the rough - good luck finding your ball. Greens have been recently aerated but no sand so balls rolled fairly well. The course was empty due to the high wind and cool temps so had the course pretty much to myself.
There were some flooded area(s) but did not alter game play. Usually $35 for early birds (no Hot Deals req.) but today found deal for $19 in Hot Deals.
Not too many days left before we get cold temps and snow. If you love to golf no matter weather condition, Chevy Chase is still open.
Def. recommended & will try to play again once water has receded and less wind chill.
Not long, tree-lined, fair track.
We enjoyed our round of golf at Chevy Chase but a few things could have made it a 5 out of 5... it's Fall so be prepared for lots of leaves on the ground - everywhere, making the ball hard to find and slowing down play. Some (4 or 5) of the greens were aerated, although still not bad to putt on. The pace of play was great on front nine but slowed considerably on back, still came in at about 4 hours.
nice course - great GPS.
The staff was very friendly & helpful. The course was in pretty good shape for late October. The only negative was they may have been able to do a better job on the fallen leaves. My partners lost a few balls just off the fairway due to the leaves.
Groupon price was REALLY GREAT!
The course is in really great shape. Greens are fast, but run true. Fairways cut right, rough not to deep, did not lose a ball because of high grass.
Tight course with outstanding greens
I haven't played a course like this in awhile. Very tight with hardly any holes to pull out the driver. Lots of trees and fairway bunkers with very narrow fairways. Not really my cup of tee, as I prefer courses that challenge all parts of my game. However, the greens were very fast and very true, something I enjoyed. We didn't see a ranger all day and the round took 5 hours on a weekday so I won't be returning to this course. But if you love fast and true greens, you might want to take a chance on having better luck than our 5 hour round.
